When do people typically decide where they will attend? I am waitlisted at my top school and am curious to know when I might find out if I am in.

If people are following proper etiquette, they will hold no more than 2 offers at a time (and even then they should be making a decision between those two ASAP). It seems like the vast majority of interviews will be wrapping up before March, so I would hope that most people who have multiple offers would be able to make a decision by early-mid March! However, there's always hope until April 15.

Thank you so much for replying! It's going to be approximately 8 months until the new application cycle begins and this will also be the first summer where I'm not taking any courses. How did you keep occupied?

Also, I'm thinking of applying for marketing jobs which have a research focus. I'm realizing that I very much enjoy applied psychology due to the research aspect of it, given my background as a consultant and analyst.

I was lucky enough to get an RA position at my undergrad institution so I didn't have any down time between graduation and starting my full-time position. It definitely felt weird to not having anything to do school-wise outside of the hours of 9-5, but it's a good weird :) Find whatever job gives you the best balance of boosting your CV and giving you the quality of life (financially and enjoyment-wise) that you want for this year and get started! Then find a hobby until application season restarts. I tried knitting - it wasn't successful.

  3. It sounds like you already know what you need to do! You're clearly very close since you've gotten great feedback from the people you've applied to. Beyond boosting the GRE, it seems to me like a year or two more of research experience will put you in a great spot! I applied last year as a senior in undergrad and got rejected everywhere, but one more year of working as an RA and I have been getting much better feedback this year. I wouldn't worry too much about "clinical experience", as long as you can illustrate that you can communicate effectively with human beings, you should be fine :)

For a bunch of future mental health professionals, people can sure be nasty when it's under the guise of anonymity.

Who else tried to Google who TM is? ?

I really think that the Duke and Yale people are just trolls. Especially given the stats the alleged Yale person listed... Easy for me to say since I didn't apply to those programs but I think they should be ignored. Though I do live for internet drama tbh lol

So this was my first time applying straight out of undergrad and I managed to land two interviews (yay!!). Unfortunately, I got rejected from my top choice and my chances aren't looking so hot for the other. I know this happens a lot so any advice/words of encouragement for my next steps would be much appreciated :)

Exact same thing happened to me last year. Two interviews, then two rejections, was still in undergrad. Take your time to take care of yourself and mourn for this cycle. I happened to take a beach trip the week that I got rejected, but that was just lucky :) Then when you're ready, make a game plan on what you'll do this next year or two, whether that's an RA position or some other path. Two interviews shows that you're already so close, reapplying with a degree and a touch more experience in a year or two will get you to where you want to be. I applied the next cycle and am really happy with the number of interviews that I got. In a year, you'll be saying that you're so glad you got to take a year off of school and learn more about yourself (even if right now that feels like BS). You're awesome!!

Mostly they present you an overview of the program and the department's assets. Ask questions if you're genuinely curious about something, though avoid negativity; they'll appreciate a good questions and would be probably annoyed by poor ones asked just for the sake of asking.

100% agree! I was once at an overview where someone was literally reading off Mitch Prinstein's list of questions in order word for word - don't do that

Can the person who was just accepted to Stony Brook post their PI/more details?

I was told by my PI that the faculty would meet next week to discuss admissions offers and that I would hear back after that. So, I’m shocked to see an(other) acceptance already handed out...

Found out through twitter that a girl was accepted already lol

    Same situation here!

Is it a bad sign if grad students/faculty in a school say that most students take out loans on top of getting the stipend bc of the city’s location? The faculty definitely agrees and understands that the stipend isn’t competitive and knows about the complaints but  as an international student, I can’t even take out loans and idk if it’s normal for PhD students to take out loans bc the stipend is not great.

I think it depends...there are some areas of the country where the cost of living is just absurd and even a really reputable program might not be able to provide a comfortable stipend.

Hey there! For those of you who have been housed with other graduate students while on your interview or visit:

What have your sleeping arrangements been like? Have you gotten your own bed, or slept on the couch?

My concern is the latter. I don’t want to book my own housing, because I know the extra time with grad students may be invaluable. However, I have this connective tissue disease, and I worry that sleeping on a couch or the like would just obliterate my body for the days of interviews. I’ll be at the interview for 3 nights total. Either way, I’m going to stay with the student. Part of me just figures if I can prep to be uncomfortable maybe I’ll be okay ?

    Any insight?

I've stayed w grad students at several programs and it has ranged from sleeping on the floor next to another applicant to a bed in a private room that was fully more comfortable than my own at home. I think it's totally reasonable to ask what to expect, especially given the fact that you have a medical condition.

  10. I was in a similar spot last year - strong GPA and GRE, good amount of clinical and research experience, and I got interviewed at 2/8 programs and those programs were statistically the least competitive out of all the ones I applied to, plus I went on to be rejected to both. This year, very little has changed on my paper application, just a couple of research posters and a better written personal statement, but I've had much more success. I cannot speak to PsyD or master's programs (which I would highly recommend you look into if you're looking to be a therapist), but for PhD programs, it really does seem like just having graduated has improved my application by a lot.

Do schools even update your online application status upon rejection? I applied to UNC for Clinical and am aware they've already sent out interview invites (the home page of the program even says so) but I was never notified and my application status still just shows "submitted."

A little frustrating that they can't even send a mass email to let me know ?

In this particular case, I personally know that I am for sure rejected because I followed up w my POI after a phone interview. My status hasn't changed, either, though. I assume they will send out an email eventually, but I do think it is probably safe to say that if you haven't heard, it isn't good news.

I have a question. I received an interview invite a few weeks ago with an RSVP form for the interview day to fill out. The email stated that my POI wanted to interview me. On the RSVP form they gave you the option of selecting up to 3 faculty members you wanted to meet with. Since I only applied to that POI, I only wrote his/her name down. I didn't want to ruin my chances with my POI by stating someone else whose research interests are not really aligned with mine. But now that I'm thinking about it, I should probably meet with more than one faculty member on the interview day. What do you all think? If I were to reach out, would I reach out to my POI or to the interview day coordinator. Does it make me look unprepared by now following up after it has already been submitted? Thank you!

They're not going to let you only interview with one person :) In my experience, they'll fill in the spots with faculty members that your POI wants you to meet and/or who have room on their schedule. Unless there is someone specific who you are dying to meet, I wouldn't reach out to ask them to change up your preferences.

I've seen a handful of UT Austin posters on the results page - if anyone can message me/reply and let me know any details you know regarding POIs who have invited and/or if all invites have been extended - please do!

in a funny turn of events - I got a preliminary phone invite not long after I posted this - PM for POI
