SetDec reacted to E-P in Purdue Fall 2018
@SetDec I moved to Chicago from Central Texas, so I know that pain.  I'm not sure what gender you are, so your experience may be different from mine.  My spouse, who is male, has far fewer "winter clothes," but rarely complains about being cold.
For me, being content in the winter consists of three items:
    1. Shoes.  Depending on how cold it is and how long you're going to be outside, the main goal is to have shoes with good tread on them.  That's so they don't slip on ice/snow.  Some shoes exist that have heat reflective/etc stuff in them too, but I don't really find that necessary unless I'm going to be outside for long periods of time or it's extremely cold (like, 0 degrees F).  I have a couple of pairs of police/combat boots that I generally wear, and a pair of duck boots I reserve for cold+wet days.
    2. Coats/jackets/hoodies.  You can often pair these - so, put a hoodie under your coat.  Check out secondhand shops, because good coats tend to be expensive.  North Face and Columbia are good brands.  Look for coats that are rated for skiing.  I also suggest, assuming you'll have a desk, keeping a hoodie at your desk as a matter of course. Don't buy any coat that's white - snow only stays pretty for about a minute, and then cars turn it into sludge.  That sludge will get onto your coat.
    3. Layers.  My favorite "Type" of layer is CuddleDuds.  They're soft, effective, cozy, etc.  You can get them on sale at Kohls or Sears for about $10 each.  I tend to cycle through 3 of each.
Really, if you have a good pair of shoes and a solid coat, you'll be fine.  Anything more than that you'll pick up along the way.  Embrace thrift shops - and keep in mind that thrift shops switch out their inventory, so you won't see much winter wear right now. You'll find that you do the same.  I have two tubs that are labeled "seasonal."  Twice a year, I dump out all my upcoming-season stuff, and pack away all my previous-season stuff.

I found out this week that I'm off the wait list for funding at my school. It's a funded master's, so I'm very happy. I finish my undergraduate in two weeks and then I think about all the logistics for fall.

@AGingeryGinger I'm glad to see other people have the same fellowship.  So far, I've only met people in my department who do.

On that note, I was able to get a summer start with it, so I'm already here and moved in.  If there's anyone else who has to move here, hit me up if you need me to do any investigating for you.  So far, I can say that if you have a hammock, be sure to bring it, because it seems like everyone and their dog has a hammock strung up if the weather is nice.

I'm still pretty sad to be going to my second choice overall school and not my first (masters). I was accepted at both but the lack of financial aid and blasé attitude the admissions office displayed toward the cost of the program was ridiculous and off-putting.  It doesn't matter how much you "believe" in the program and it's value - the job prospects are well-paying but not surgeon, corporate lawyer, wall street, take out 100k well-paying. I still have debt from undergrad and I know how soul-sucking throwing money at interests payments and seeing the balance go nowhere can feel... and even more I would likely have the same job prospects from either program. But I liked the idea of going there more and the location. I should be thankful to have had options considering the cycles other had - but I still need to let out a whine.

So yesterday I visited one of my schools, felt like the biggest imposter in the world, maybe had a bit of a stroke, and then I SIGNED A CONTRACT?
I haven't even heard back from two of my schools (one I'm waitlisted at, another is an assumed rejection) but I FELL IN LOVE with the labs and the department and some potential advisers and the current grad students were all really cool (and sooooo intelligent, I'm kinda out of my league here).
And because of the snow that's hitting the East right now I'm stuck here for another day (and the department generously paid for another night at the hotel) so I'm going to go buy some apparel and explore.

Before I finalized all my decisions yesterday, I met with my current mentor to talk it all through. My main goal was to get advice on how to turn down offers, because I felt terrible about it! She made the excellent point that if a PI gives you a hard time about declining and does not want the best for you, then that is a red flag potentially indicating that had you chosen to work with them, they would not have had your best interests at heart. I think you made the right call.

@iwearflowersI try to interpret emails in the best way possible, like texting it can sometimes sounds more passive aggressive then they intended. I would hope that a professor would genuinely hope you make the right decision for you since the decision impacts your life! Congratulations on your decision!

I kept getting emails from a highly sought after programs starting with "Dear Prospective Grad Student..." My friend and I kept replying "Dear Prospective Grad School" they stopped emailing us.... There are programs that auto-fill your name into their letters it shouldn't be that hard to put the correct spelling of someone's name

Just a fun story. I'm in NYC after a campus visit, just hanging around town in a hostel, and a woman came into my room who told me she is a prostitute. She's incredibly nice, she talked to me about her business, and we hit it off. 20 minutes after meeting her, I've told her about graduate school and why I'm here, and she has weighed in on where she thinks I should go!
This decision-making process has definitely been a fun one!

I haven't seen anyone else talk about Miami University, but I figured I would go ahead and put this out there-- I got accepted with a full tuition waiver and a TA position with a stipend!

Hi! This past year I have had a lot of interviews for high-level design jobs and grad school interviews and as a woman it is a little difficult for interview dress code in the creative industry. What I normally wear, which has not been an issue, is clean black booties ( I have a pair of all black leather oxfords from Frye I got on sale for $20) they are comfortable and easy to walk in yet polished; a casual blouse (look at Daniel Rainn for examples) and a pair of dark/black skinny jeans (I go for a cut that is between a straight but and a skinny so it is a little form fitting but not leggings) or a poly blend trouser (wool tends to attract lint and I don't want to worry about that) and finally a nice blazer in a fun color or causal cut. I work in theater and film and most of the time I look more put together than the interviewer (but they already have the job so its not a priory for them) but like I would fit in the environment well. I wore a variation of this at my interviews and most people commented that they liked an element of the outfit upon walking me out, so adding fun details like a brooch on your jacket or a fun but not distracting jewelry piece can help showcase your creativity and style without being too over the top.
    Hope this helps!

SetDec got a reaction from AngryHarold in Skype vs. In-Person Interviews
I have had over the phone interviews and skype so far since I'm on the West Coast and I applied to schools all over the US. So far, all the programs I'm interested in have tried their best to figure out which works best for both parties involved since they understand the expense but want to get to know the students they accept. It gets a little awkward with the freezing and buffering sometimes. As long as you treat it as you would an in-person interview, all the schools I've talked to it was fine.
