Using a class term paper for my thesis
Charlie Moon replied to Charlie Moon's topic in Writing, Presenting and Publishing
So how would I go about integrating my work in my thesis if that was not considered honest ? -
Hey ! I have conducted a bunch of analyses on my thesis's data for a term paper in one of my classes. Can I reuse what I wrote for the term paper in my thesis ? I know that you have to cite your own published work, but in this case, it is not published as it was for a class only. Thanks in advance !

Not my first time in grad school as I have a masters already, but here are a bunch of things I did to prepare : Academic wise : -Start thinking about my research /read papers to make sure I enjoy it before commiting to a topic. -Organizing my files on my computer( seriously, do it) and retyping notes that I would need again. -Learning LaTeX. -Work on my CV / personal website (even if you don't put anything online yet, just having an idea of what you want) Mental Health wise: -Spending time with my family /friends -Allowing myself days off where I would just watch youtube and play pokémon. -Read for pleasure. -Old hobbies (art, painting...)
-
That really depends on the type of work you want to do. If its simply taking notes than an aging surface is just fine. If you need to run more demanding programs or software you might find yourself struggling. My best advice would be to do with what you have for the begining and see how it works out for you and if not, what you might need.

How do you make a habit of responding quickly to an email?
Charlie Moon replied to ShropshireLad's question in Questions and Answers
I don't know what your workflow is but basically I set myself a "work day" and I try to have an empty inbox by the end of that day. Right now its 10pm. I make a point of answering anything that is in my inbox by 10pm. When it is a complicated email or I need time to think about it, I have a 24h limit. Another tip would be to devote 5min of each study or work session to emails, typically at the end so you can "trim the fat" more regularly. -
Thank you, I guess I will have to wait until I get my email then. could you advise me on the best month to start looking ?
-
I will be heading to UB in the fall and I won't have a car. I have narrowed my search to north campus (where my classes will be), south campus or somewhere in between close to the shuttle bus. I have been struggling to find something, either too pricey or a little shady (I'm especially paranoid as I won't be able to visit). Any tips ? I'm looking for around 400-500 a month because my stipend is pretty low.

April 15th on a Sunday?
Charlie Moon replied to Applicant4788's topic in The April 15th is this week! Freak-out forum.
I was given until the 16th of April to accept my offer so I guess it depends on the university, best of luck ! -
Should I decline my Ph.D. offer and re-apply?
Charlie Moon replied to Stella_***'s topic in Decisions, Decisions
If I was in your place I would keep the Phd. You can always MA out if you don't feel like it is something you want to do. Funded programs are so rare and you don't know if you will get such an opportunity again, especially with a master that is much harder to get funded. The good thing is that if you are staying in university, you can improve your applications at the same time, work with professors, publish and present. Going to the phd and strengthening your application are not mutually exclusive.- 18 replies

Thanks for your answer ! I have a masters degree already so I know what I'm going towards and I am sure I will like it. It's just thinking about it as a whole is scary. You insights on jobs are interesting, you are 100% that getting paid to learn is amazing (even if its low pay and I won't be able to make more because of visa work laws :/)

I just got my offer for a Ph.D program. I will accept. My life is now "stuck" in a city, in a foreign country, and I will spend 5 years minimum there, on a low stipend. I will come out of there being 30, most likely broke and with a phd that is fascinating but does not guarantee employment at all. How do you process it ? I am deeply in love with the school and the program, but I find all of this very daunting and there are moments when I feel like saying no because I am scared.

I got accepted into the program that originally waitlisted me. This is the end of this waiting cycle and I'm so happy that it ends with an actual offer. Cannot believe it. Good luck to those still waiting !

My poi has been super positive telling me that the chances were high. But I just don't want to let myself believing in it until I have an official offer.....Hang in there !
