  1. Hi all. I realize this isn't strictly specific to social work but it doesn't seem to be gaining much traction on the other forum and I'm a bit desperate. I’m just wondering if anyone had like a ballpark figure about the credit score required to be approved for graduate PLUS loans. Mine is pretty bad, like, mid-500’s, and it may even get worse before it gets better. I’m hoping to improve it before I go to school this fall, but if not, do I stand any chance of being approved for a PLUS loan with a score like that? And is it possible that there may be additional scholarship money available if I do not? When I was in undergrad my dad was denied for a parent PLUS loan my senior year and they gave me $4,000 in extra money to compensate. Also, does anyone know if Stafford loans are dependent on your credit score? Don’t need any advice about my financial situation; I know it’s bad and I’m doing my best to fix it. Just wondering if anyone has even a relative idea of what credit score is required to qualify. Thanks in advance for any info you can provide! Edit: nvm, just realized it’s not dependent on credit score, but rather whether one has an adverse credit history. Linking the info I found below in case anyone might find it helpful in future. Sorry. http://www.finaid.org/loans/gradplus.phtml https://www.nerdwallet.com/blog/loans/student-loans/adverse-credit-history/ https://www.edvisors.com/private-student-loans/student-loans-for-borrowers-with-bad-credit/ Note to self: Google is your friend.
  2. *Meant to say Stafford loans, obviously.
  3. Oh and @ML878, would you mind sharing your GPA/stats? Totally understand if you don’t feel comfortable, just thought I’d ask!
  4. Gotcha, thanks! Man, now that I know I might not have to wait until February for scholarship info, I want to call them so much! Oh, one more question - do you know what date you were actually accepted? It should say on the ApplyYourself portal, I think... just wondering how much of a wait I should expect between the online decision and the physical letter. It's already been a week (and I actually live in Pittsburgh!), which according to last year's thread is typical for them but still makes me anxious because everything makes me anxious, haha. Totally understand if you don't feel like checking, though. I should probably attempt to rein in my obsessive tendencies just a bit.
  5. Gotcha, and when did you submit the application, if you don’t mind me asking? It’s possible, but also, maybe they are just doing things differently this year. I wouldn’t complain if that was the case - I don’t want to wait until February for the info!
  6. Hi all. I hope this is the right place to be posting this... I’m just wondering if anyone had like a ballpark figure about the credit score required to be approved for graduate PLUS loans. Mine is pretty bad, like, mid-500’s, and it may even get worse before it gets better. ? I’m hoping to improve it before I go to school this fall (trust me, I’m doing everything I can) but if not, do I stand any chance of being approved for a PLUS loan with a score like that? And is it possible that there may be additional scholarship money available if I do not? When I was in undergrad my dad was denied for a parent PLUS loan my senior year and they gave me $4,000 in extra money to compensate. 7. Also @ML878, when did you submit your FAFSA? I’m worried mine may be delayed because I just submitted the FAFSA a couple days ago. ?
  8. Wow, that’s surprising! Last year they didn’t send that info out until much later. Congrats! I think 12,000 is average-high for them. I haven’t but hopefully I will get that letter in the mail soon... and yeah, it’s still a lot, especially as an out-of-state student.
  9. Will do! And yeah, I know, it is staggering. I hope we all get the scholarships we need to make it happen!
  10. That’s so amazing, congratulations!!!!!
  11. Thanks so much, that’s very helpful! I think scholarship info won’t get sent out until February based on past threads, but I may call and ask just to make sure.
  12. Congrats! The waiting is so awful. I wish everyone the best of luck as well!
  13. Congrats and good luck with the rest!
  14. Wow, you’ve already gotten into some amazing schools, congratulations!
  15. I only applied to Pitt and I found out I was admitted a week ago. I had guaranteed admission since I applied by December 31st but it was still nervewracking. Now I’m just dying to hear back about financial aid...
  16. Yeahhhh, it’s complicated. I’m a second cycle applicant and I didn’t get enough money in scholarships to justify attending last year. We’d been looking to move for a while and Pitt has guaranteed admission if you have over a certain GPA and apply by the deadline. I have tried to give it a chance but I just really don’t like it. My boyfriend wants to stay though and we can’t really afford to move again so soon, so I’m stuck. I think it will be better once I start school, but the next 7 months are gonna pass super slowly for sure. Thank you for your kind words, they’re much appreciated. ?
  17. As for me, I'm currently exhausted because I've gotten about 8 hours of sleep the past two days. I work an extremely early shift at my current job and oh my God, it is brutal. I'm also sad because I don't like the city I live in (where I will almost certainly be attending grad school) and I miss my home state and my family so much. I really never thought I'd feel like this (when I was a teenager, all I wanted to do was travel and live someplace exciting), and dealing with it is proving a lot harder than I anticipated.
  18. Gotcha. Well, I hope it all works out okay!
  19. Ooh, this is rough, I feel for you. It's hard to hang out with friends and their partners - sometimes people just don't mesh very well. I hope it doesn't end up hurting your friendship in the long run!
  20. When are you supposed to graduate? That situation seems incredibly stressful, I'm sorry you're dealing with that!
  21. Not strictly about applications but I just finished the FAFSA! So glad that’s done. Idk why but I always get so nervous with stuff like that where you basically have to swear upon pain of death that everything you’re saying is true and correct to the best of your knowledge. I would obviously never lie on a form like that but I’m always terrified that I made a mistake somewhere, it’s so annoying. Does anyone else have this?
  22. That’s so awesome, congratulations! Yeah, I’m hoping there’ll be more info in the mail. If I do end up calling them I’ll report back here. Probably gonna give it a few days, though - I was accepted less than a week ago, after all.
  23. @bloome, did you receive a letter in the mail in addition to the notification online? And if so, did it say anything about a deadline to enroll/put down a deposit or anything about when scholarships would be awarded? I'm thinking of calling today to ask a couple questions but I don't want to annoy them if that info is already in the mail on its way to me...
  24. Is that the same thing as Advanced Standing? I’d recommend looking through the thread from last year to get an idea of what they’re looking for. There are pages and pages of us moaning about how long it took for them to get back to us, though, so just be forewarned. Also, people got rejected with some pretty impressive stats, so my guess is that it’s not all about GPA. And yeah, I didn’t go. They only gave me 11,000 a year in scholarship money, and with the extremely high tuition and cost of living in NYC combined with the fact that I already have debt from undergrad, it just didn’t make sense in any way. The fact that my boyfriend flat-out refused to move to NYC also made it easier to turn down tbh. As soon as I did, I felt a massive sense of relief. Unless you get a substantial scholarship/your parents can help/you’re independently wealthy, I don’t see how anyone can justify the cost, tbh.
  25. Hi, I was accepted to Columbia’s two-year MSW program last year. I applied on the deadline (Feb 15th) and did not hear back until April. My GPA is a 3.5, no real experience, BA in an unrelated field. I think I saw that you are applying for Advanced Standing. Anecdotally, that program seemed much more selective than the regular two-year program (based on people’s stats from the thread last year), so take that as you will.
