Just got accepted to Miami off the waitlist.
Finally, some good news.

I don't know for sure, but I've never heard of this practice within philosophy. Sounds like the kind of thing upon which philosophers would frown...

Accepted University of Michigan! 
Declined: Marquette, Stony Brook, Villanova, Boston University, Fordham
Took myself off the waitlist: DePaul, UT Austin, Emory
(and, of course, rejected far, far more places than these)

April 7 thru April 15 is a LOT of movement.
To this day I don't know why my post got such mixed reactions. Punchline: People need to make decisions, including notifying schools that they will inevitably turn down but just don't feel like turning down. It is in everyone's interest to be a grownup and do something uncomfortable, like closing doors on good offers that aren't your best offers.

Looking at this department's website like:

There is still time for them to get back to you. Especially the programs with later application deadlines. Second, the hidden wait-list part is true to some extent. When I was going through the process, I found out I was on wait-lists for two schools once i emailed them. Until then, I hadn't heard anything.

One of 6! Congrats on that. I don't know anything about their funding situation, but I am personally outraged that they accepted 6/170 of their applicants and can't even offer y'all funding. Good luck!

Got an email from Indiana Univ. HPS saying that their admissions process is moving slowly, that I am one of their top applicants, and that they are trying to work out funding details. They asked if I am still interested in the program. I plan on telling them that, while I appreciate their generosity, I have already received four offers elsewhere...and so I would rather withdraw the app and give someone else a shot at a funded offer there. 

In at Stanford. Received an informal email from Jared Warren. I am appalled. It is appalling. It makes my week, and perhaps my life... Feel a little bit unreal now.

It has changed over the years a bit, but at some points Rutgers, Purdue, Cornell, USC, UNC, Texas @ Austin, Notre Dame (at first), University of Kentucky, and Stony Brook have all had hidden waitlists. Some of them, along with other schools I haven't kept track of explicitly, have a second waitlist that they will pull from if the initial set declines fwiw.

Congrats again! I got a rejection from them yesterday lol but at least the nerves are done where they're concerned. 

It happens! I love their ethics people but the program overall wouldn't be a great fit.

When I received WL emails I just reply and say thank you for the consideration and that I'm still very much interested in the PhD program at University of My Dreams.

That would be me and, no, they haven’t given me any details on funding yet.

I don't know how "hard" acceptance to UBC MA is or what you, personally, need to feel like you have accomplished something (whether thats a non-rejection from a competitive program or something else) but...you have accomplished something. You've continued through this godforsaken wasteland of a process despite academic, emotional, financial (et cetera) challenges. Feel good about that! And best of luck.
