Fall 2019 Clinical Psych Interview Invites

Can confirm: I was snowed most of the weekend and my professor got her flight into Boston-Logan cancelled. The city is pretty frozen right now so I'd be patient! -

Well, I just got a rejection email from my first choice program Really not looking good for a couple other schools as well. Trying to stay optimistic, as there are 3 more that I haven't heard from, but hard not to feel pessimistic at this point... -

I received an email around the time applications were due (had a snafu with one of my transcripts) and the department admin said we would know if we got an interview by the 21st. Tracking previous years on the Results page, it looks like we should hear in the next couple of days. (Not sure what program you applied to, but I applied to Clinical Child Health track). Anxiously checking my email! -

It has been a hot minute since I checked in here...happy to see people progressing on their applications! I spent September studying for and taking the GRE Psychology subject test and retaking the GRE General test. My standard GRE scores weren't as good as the ones I took two years ago (when I applied to Master's programs), so I sent my initial scores off to schools (157 V, 155 Q, 4.0 AW). I'm still waiting to hear back my Psychology scores, since it was a written test and those take longer, but I felt good about it! I also narrowed down my schools that I'm applying to: University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center, University of Washington, Loyola University Chicago, University of Texas-Austin, Boston University, University of Florida, and University of Miami. All of those are clinical programs, except for UT, which is a school program. I emailed and heard back from PIs at 3 of the schools when I was unsure about whether they were accepting students, so my name is out there! If anyone has any insight to these programs or is applying there as well, feel free to reach out. My plan is to spend October revising my personal statement, nailing down my 3rd recommendation letter (the other two are luckily locked down), and sending off transcripts. I am SHOCKED that some people already have applications submitted-I still think I'm a month out from having anything fully submitted. The second year of my Master's is proving to be much challenging than the first (currently juggling two research labs, my thesis, a class, and applications)! Anyways, best of luck to everyone!! -

Thanks for the tips! Do you mind my asking how far in advance of the test you started studying? -

I've officially narrowed down the schools I am applying to this fall! Let me know if anyone has info on these programs: Texas A&M; UT Southwestern; Alabama-Birmingham; Washington; Miami; Loyola Chicago; UT-Austin; Vanderbilt; Boston University; Florida; Georgia; Nebraska-Lincoln; Maryland-Baltimore County Now I'm focusing on preparing to retake the GRE later this summer...any tips on how to do that while working a full-time job and preparing a master's thesis would be welcome! ? -
PhD Final Decision Thread Fall 2018
rosesandrecords replied to clinical_chicana's topic in Psychology Forum
Is anyone else considering retaking the GRE? I'm trying to decide if I should. I took it two years ago when I applied to Master's programs and did pretty well (157 V 155 Q 4.0 AW) but as I'm researching average scores for the programs I'm interested in, I'm noticing that they're all a few points higher than mine. I've talked to a couple other grad students and they retook it but did the same/a little worse, so I'm concerned about wasting my money and time on something that may not pay off. Is anyone else doing this or has anyone else done this? Help!!- 56 replies

Hey there-I would recommend getting an Airbnb/hotel room/crashing on a friend's couch for the time that you are here in August. I ran into the same issue when I moved here last year. Since there are so many universities in the Boston area the vast majority of apartments are on a September 1st start date. If you can find a place to sublease for those couple weeks that's another option? As for moving-I'm not sure how far away you're coming from, but when I moved here from Texas last year I brought only my essentials (i.e. toiletries, some clothes I needed for orientation/downtime) for the time I was there in August, and then arranged for all my other stuff to arrive at my apartment on 9/1. Sounds like you won't have a lot of nonclothing to deal with so that may be easier for you than it was for me!

That is too funny! I really like Boston, but I CANNOT deal with the winters. Hopefully we both get what we want this application season! -

Thanks for the info! That's good to know going forward. Everything I read on their website looked good, and there's a POI there whose research I find really exciting, but if there's not many clinical opportunities involving children I may rethink applying there. -

Hi all! Glad there are other people out there already thinking about the application process. Most of the other people in my program (I'm currently getting my MA in Child Development) are going straight into practice once we're done, so it's nice to know I'm not alone. I'm interested in mostly clinical psychology programs, and my research interests lie in the area of pediatric psychology. Some of the schools I'm looking at are: Auburn University University of Florida Oklahoma State University UT Southwestern Medical Center University of Texas at Austin (this is a school psychology program, because that's where their ped psych person is) As you can see, I'm aiming to attend school in the South. I currently live near Boston and I'm sick of the weather! I'd love to return home to Texas, but I don't think I can afford to make my applications THAT narrow... Looking forward to navigating this application season with y'all!
