Fall 2019 Clinical Psychology Canadian Applicants!
gillis_55 replied to FallGO's topic in Psychology Forum
Yes ? Got a jolt from the subject line, "Register for Open House" only to see it was generic. I would suggest it's not worth attending unless you already live in the area - it seems pretty general and geared towards undergrads with limited focus on grad programs. -

Still nothing on my end, and I haven't seen anything on the results page or forum either. I hope they start reaching out soon! -

That is odd - in that case, don't listen to me! I'd suggest emailing or calling the grad secretary today to ask if they are still issuing invitations. -

@neocortical.coffee and @s_bellow Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but I think the official interview invites for UTSC went out last week - the admissions committee met on Jan 14th to review all applicants after initial Skype interviews with POIs, then sent out official invites that evening. Still possible to receive an in-person after the official interview day though, you never know who will decline or drop out of the running! -
Re: McGill, is this for the Counselling MA? If yes, internship or project stream? Thanks very much

No, it was just one informal Skype interview with the POI. She said next stage would be Skype interviews with other faculty, etc. like you just described. Sounds like I didn't make the cut unfortunately. Disappointing, but this is all part of the process Good luck with your application, I hope you get an offer! -

Is this for the formal interviews, or a Skype interview? I had a Skype interview that I thought went quite well about 10 days ago, but haven't heard anything since. -

I applied too and I haven’t heard anything yet. -
I can't remember the source of this list, but I downloaded it last year from an association or society focused on child clinical psychology. Hope this is helpful! I'll try to track down the source and post it here if I can find it. Child and Adolescent Clinical PhD and Masters Grad School List.xlsx

Hi guys, just a heads up that Waterloo in-person invites will be the week of Jan 28th and Feb 4th. It sounds like there is no open house, it's just interviews. Received this info from the POI when I was emailed for a Skype interview. Message me directly if you'd like my POI's initials. -
Oops sorry I should've clarified, they're at different schools..

@socneuro and @psykick Thanks so much, that makes a lot of sense!

Just had my first Skype interview, it went really well! She was very nice and her questions were as expected - what was my path to grad school (I have a career change), why clinical psych, what was the biggest challenge I've faced so far, what is my statistics experience in terms of my projects (and it was okay that I said it's been several years - she went on to describe how her students get training in it). She spent lots of time talking about her projects and giving me more details, I'm extra excited about what she's working on now.

Hey guys I have a question about applying to POIs that know each other. I've received Skype interview invites from 2 POIs who work closely with each other (let's say A and B). Supervisor A mentioned Supervisor B when she was going over her projects. I didn't say in the moment, "Oh yes I'm applying to him too!", but should I email her and disclose that I am interviewing with him as well?

I'm with you. I have one final application due Jan 15th and I am strongly considering not doing it - I've written 13 already and I'm so done with that part of the process! Especially because this school is asking for a personal statement plus 1,500 words in custom essays.

I'm not sure if this was the right way to go about it, but once I wrote my CGS proposal for Dec 1st I modified it slightly for each OGS application and submitted them all. York and UOttawa were due Dec 1st (as was NSGS for Dalhousie) but the rest have deadlines in January/February/March. I would say to just get it off your plate and submit an application for wherever you applied. It's also helpful to be able to say you applied for funding if they do contact you for an interview. -

Me too! Most schools open on Jan 7th though so I'm not fretting too much this week. -
Apologies if this was asked already, but what are people's thoughts on agreeing to stay with grad student versus booking your own hotel room/airbnb etc? I'm a terrible sleeper so the idea of being in a stranger's place for the night isn't ideal for me, I'd rather be on my own. Would this be a disadvantage though? Better to just suck it up?

How different is grad school from undergrad?
gillis_55 replied to ResilientDreams's topic in The Lobby
With the caveat that I am currently applying for PhDs, so this advice isn't from me - 3 close friends of mine have completed PhDs and I've had lengthy discussions with them about it so I can apply with eyes wide open. One thing they both said that stuck out to me was, as a PhD student you are most often working alone. While you may receive general guidance (or not, depending on your advisor), it's up to you to drive your research and meet your self-set deadlines. In undergrad and at the master's level, there is so much more support from advisors to keep you on track and there's also coursework to keep you connected with your classmates. Both friends felt quite isolated by the end of their PhDs and were happy to be done. They did not regret doing it, but definitely struggled in the last couple of years. Another thing they mentioned was perfectionism and getting over not being the "best" - there will always be more work to be done than humanly possible, and there will always be superstars who are smarter, harder working etc. than you. It's important to keep an identity outside of academia and remember that your inherent worth is not tied to your publication count. Finally, be very judicious with volunteering your time on extra projects, committees, journals, etc - it's very easy to end up in a place where you have way too much on your plate. It sounds like you already have great habits about starting work in advance and pacing yourself, so those skills will serve you well in grad school. I think the trick for me will be keeping a healthy balance with other parts of my life, and not getting sucked into the trap of never feeling good enough. -
I would love to see what you've created, but I'm getting "no results" despite having everything selected.

Good idea for a thread! I enjoy lifting weights and pilates - I've let those things slip the last month in the rush to get my applications submitted, but I will get back on track during the holiday break. My hope is that I'll be able to get a dog after settling in at grad school, but I've heard mixed opinions on that one (re: time commitment, expenses). If only my partner wasn't allergic to cats!

Just went down a rabbit hole following all the articles about this case. Very disturbing, the allegations went all the way back to 2002. "The plaintiffs claim Dartmouth knew about the professors' behavior for more than 16 years and did nothing. Then in 2017, at least 27 people came forward in connection with formal claims of alleged sexual assault and sexual harassment by the three men... During the Title IX investigation, Dartmouth failed to provide the plaintiffs with support, accommodations or guidance, then "unilaterally terminated" the disciplinary process, letting Heatherton retire and Kelley and Whalen resign, without seeking their input, the lawsuit claims." CNN "After [the plaintiff] was sexually assaulted, she sought professional counseling services at Dartmouth's health center and shared intimate thoughts about the assault, the lawsuit said. During the Title IX inquiry, Chauhan provided her records to the school's investigator. According to the lawsuit, she was appalled to learn later from the Title IX report that the investigator showed her counseling records to Whalen and his attorneys without her consent" This is just what the plaintiffs allege, but from what it sounds like there was most definitely a culture enabling this behavior.

I checked the Results section for previous years for all of my programs (see my signature), and only UVic and Dalhousie have any history of sending out December invites; lots of their invites came in January as well though. So I think we're all going to be waiting for another few weeks! To me, it looked like notification emails were the most popular communication method by far. Plus, if you don't pick up the phone, I assume they would leave a message and you could call them back later. -
Have you spoken with the professors of these courses about your situation? They may be willing to at least let you pass or allow a makeup assignment. A stretch I know, but at this point it's worth it! Aside from that, I second what @StHoly said. There is a lot to be gained from working for a few years before applying to grad school (as a lab assistant or in another data/research related field). It's a good buffer against the burnout that can happen for attending school for 10+ years straight; it allows you to make some money and payoff your existing loans and save up for grad school; and it gives you great experience and makes you more competitive for higher ranked programs. It may also illuminate a different career path for you - several of my friends who worked after undergrad ended up enjoying their new jobs (and salaries!) and didn't end up applying the following year. Finally, I think a break would be a great chance to recharge, especially if you're feeling overwhelmed and dealing with depression. Good luck! Remember that you'll be working for another 30+ years at least, so taking an extra year or two is a drop in the bucket.
