University of Minnesota status update?
Nels Nelson replied to firefoxquantum's topic in Waiting it Out
Sorry to hear you did not get in :( . It is good you have a choice, I have a friend who only got into one after applying to 12 or so and I can tell he is bummed (though also grateful). I did get in! They waited to the end of the day April 20th to tell me, basically the last possible moment they could have waited until before I would have accepted Carnegie Mellon. I really wish they would have been more communicative (and they are currently far less communicative than I would like). But yes, I got in, my wife and I are super excited - it will be super helpful to be there with my family as we are having our first child. I didn't get any kind of scholarship package (surprised) but still I will apply for funding and will make it work. Also a professor there said I may be able to RA in his lab. All the best, Nels- 9 replies

Update Just heard from the Prof I have been working with at UMN and he said the money is real tight in their department this year so he isn't able to make offers himself and that I didn't make the cut for scholarships from the college . Still don't know about if I got in or not, but I expect/hope I'll hear something after the 15th. This funding situation could likely be an Environmental Engineering specific thing what with the gutting the EPA and all. But with CMU's Environmental Engineering department being so cozy with the natural gas industry, they may be less affected. So I will likely not get offered funding from UMN, which makes me weary about banking that I will be able to do a PhD there. I don't know what to do if I get accepted but without funding. The two programs would cost the same in out of pocket/loans expenses. Any thoughts?

University of Minnesota status update?

yea I reckon asking for an extension is a good idea if UMN is your top choice. Just heard from the Prof I have been working with there and he said the money is real tight in their department this year so he isn't able to make offers himself and that I didn't make the cut for scholarships from the college . University of Minnesota status update?

Hmm well I really only looked into schools that are doing research in my hyper-specific field of microbial bioremediation, so I don't know about what is a better CS program. I think you have to see which school will help give you the biggest assist in the direction you want to go. If you want to do research in a specific thing, look at the faculty and what research they are doing. If you want to go into industry and career right after your MS look at the career centers and career resources the two schools have, some schools will also post average salaries of graduates which can be a useful metric. If you're confident you will get paid well in a CS career I would concentrate less on the cost of tuition (which you can finance with loans if need be hopefully) and more on where it will take you - if you are less confident then maybe consider the less expensive option. I just sent a denial to Montana like 4 minutes ago, it felt so weird and hard to shut a door like that - but that is life sometimes I suppose. I asked for an extension and Carnegie Mellon is giving me an extra week to decide, hopefully UMN gets back to me in that time.- 9 replies

Civil & Environmental Engineering - Fall 2018 Applicants
Nels Nelson replied to strawberrykat's topic in Engineering
Yea that seems like what I am probably going to do. Minnesota has other benefits though because my family lives there and I have a baby on the way, so the family/baby part of the equation is huge. But Pittsburg would work too. CMU has given me an extra week, If I don't hear back from Minnesota by then (or get a rejection), I will enroll at CMU. I can always go to Minnesota for the PhD, and yea the CMU program is quick. Thanks.- 209 replies

University of Minnesota status update?

Carnegie Mellon and Montana State University. What about you? I honestly think UMN is avoiding me at this point, maybe it is their policy not to talk to people on a waitlist (I don't know if I am on a waitlist or not though)- 9 replies

I asked two schools for extensions. Neither of them seemed upset or annoyed about it.

Oh wow thanks! I saw a PDF http://cgsnet.org/ckfinder/userfiles/files/CGSResolution_RevisedApril2018.pdf and Carnegie Mellon was not on there. So does that mean I will need a release if I accept and withdraw? And that I might have to pay for a whole semester if I withdraw?

My number 2 choice is partially funded (about half of tuition is covered by scholarships), however I checked and they (Carnegie Mellon) are not part of the Council of Graduate Schools so I don't think I will need a written release (though I am making an educated guess on this) if I withdraw. Apologies if you were only asking the original poster

Thanks!! You think I should tell Carnegie Mellon sooner rather than later I will need the extension?

Similar scenario for me. Civil and Environmental Engineering program for me, and yeah it is April 11th and still no response from UMN. I also have two offers but UMN is my number one and I can't get through to anyone. Good luck- 9 replies

Applying to Environmental Engineering MS (and later PhD) here. I got an acceptance from Carnegie Mellon Feb 1st (funding but not full ride), and an acceptance from Montana State University March 27th. I still have not heard back from the other two schools, (Oregon State University and University of Minnesota). Minnesota is my number 1 pick because of their Bioremediation focus (which is my focus). But I don't know what to do because the April 15th deadline is this Sunday! Also Minnesota seems to be avoiding me because the professor I have been communicating with for the last year is suddenly unresponsive and the admissions department is also not responding to me... Do yall think I should just accept my number 2 (Carnegie Mellon) and withdraw if I get a good offer from Minnesota? I would rather not tarnish bridges and be out a $100 deposit if I don't have to. But I will if I need to. Carnegie Mellon said they would give me another week past April 15th if I need it, I just don't know how long to hold out and I am going crazy. Also, does anyone know if University of Minnesota Civil and Environmental Engineering Masters offers have gone out yet? I suspect a first round went out a while ago but don't have any information on that. Thanks! GPA: 3.69 Major: Biology , Minor: Chemistry GRE: 159 Verbal (83%), 160 Quantitative (76%), 4.5 Writing (82%)

I am in the same boat. I have Heard back from 2, waiting to hear back from 2 (1 of them is top choice), grad programs in Environmental Engineering. I emailed the schools I have been accepted to and explained I am still waiting and asked for an extension, they both gave me an extra week - hopefully that is enough. Otherwise yea you totally can accept and pull out, if it is a PhD program with a specific professor you may tarnish a bridge by doing that but I hear it happens ALL THE TIME. The one thing to check on is the deposit, if there is one, I know my #2 school has a deposit ($100) that I will lose if I accept and pull out. Any other advice ? So very much wanting to learn more about this too.
