Does anyone know if I can collect observation hours without being enrolled into a school?

That depends on the grad school! Most will accept your hours as long as they are documented (dates, disorders observed, treatment approaches, etc) but some require you to have done it so that you’ve received academic credit for your observation. My undergrad didn’t have a CSD program, so I’m lucky that most of the programs I applied to didn’t require observations to be done during my courses.

  2. Please make sure all schools help you to find externships! A while back, I had heard negative things about Brooklyn in how much support they gave students with finding placements. I remember one girl having an issue with finding a placement and her being stuck because of it. I don’t recall the exact scenario and it was a few years ago, but it did make me feel slightly wary of applying to Brooklyn’s program. That may not fair— it could definitely have been all the girl’s fault, who knows— but I would get the scoop from Brooklyn about how they do placements before committing! I know from their open house that  BU is excellent at working with you to find the placements you need, but I don’t know much in that area about the other two, and you definitely want to be certain that’s one thing you don’t have to worry about in the middle of grad school!

  3. I hope this is satire. It must be, right?

(How do people go out of an interview and think, "If I don't get this, the school must be not only wrong but corrupt"?)

    • Only institution that rejected me after an interview. I was accepted into PhD programs at institutions that sh!t on UCSF's research as reflected by their higher ranking/prestige, so their decision seemed highly political. Therefore I must concur with an earlier post stating that UCSF's selection committee makes decisions based on politics instead of actual merit. #CollegeAdmissionsScandal2.0
  4. I don't really have any advice to give you, but I am in a very similar situation with two schools. I would love to read other peoples' thoughts to your dilemma. I don't know if this is helpful, but when I was freaking out about me potentially picking the wrong program and not knowing, someone told me yesterday something very simple: "If you have two programs that are great options for you, there is no 'bad' decision." Might you be more successful in an area if you went to one program over the other? Maybe. Might you have less stress cost-wise at one program, or less stress work-wise at the other? Possibly, but you do still have some time. Have you reached out to other students at these programs and asked their thoughts? Anyway, I haven't made a decision yet, but reminding myself that I have two great options and that at either program I will (and you will!) be successful has taken a lot of the pressure and anxiety off of the decision itself so that I can think about it more rationally. I can't tell you where I would go, but you will find your way whichever path you take and, it sounds like, come out a very competent SLP either way!

hi! I also am unable to attend the open house. Online it said that if you were an undergrad in CSD, the program would probably take you 5 semesters including summers. But that would just be one semester, correct? Because a summer is considered a semester? I know it's 42 credit hours total but that seems a bit low compared to other schools!

If you have the prereqs done/did CSD undergrad, it's 5 semesters, with only one summer: fall, spring, summer, fall, spring. I think they must do their credits differently, because I was also surprised about it only being 42 credits. I will be there on Friday for their Accepted Students Day, so I'm hoping to ask about that then.

Declined Pitt. Likely to decline GWU, MGH and Emerson but waiting for some financial aid info to come in before I do.

Have you heard if/when we'll hear about financial information about GWU? I assume we won't hear anything about funding that we haven't already been told from MGH until after April 15th.

For those on the wait list for Western, does anyone understand the student center that shows our application status. I am a bit confused about what the difference is between weight list offered and weight list accepted.

Hey @westernhopeful2! I don't know the answer, but your best bet for one is probably to post in the Canadian SLP thread. Feel free to ask about Western's waitlist here! The thread is very active and I'm sure someone over there will know the answer! Good luck!

  8. I am deciding between two schools, but if I end up attending MGH I'm planning on living in Cambridge (around 20 minutes away from Charlestown). I have friends in the area, so I'll definitely be asking them for ideas about housing before going apartment hunting and all that, but right now I'm not sure what I'll be doing yet.

Hi everyone! I recently got accepted to CSUF, CSULB, Biola, CBU, and Portland State. I’m having a hard time deciding which school would be the best for me, and I’m looking for current graduate students to share their experience and give their honest opinions about the programs they’re either currently in or have completed. Thanks!!

Hi SoCal2bSLP, you'll have the best luck with hearing about the different programs if you post in the in the SLP forum-- Check it out here. Good luck with your decision!

    Sorry,

I'm a bit new to gradcafe, where is the results page for CSUF??

Right now you're in the "browse" tab so you can see the forum section on here. Click the "results" tab in the upper left corner of your screen (to the right of the "browse" tab) to see admissions results. Or you can just type in www.thegradcafe.com/survey/, which should take you to the same place. You can type in what you're looking for to adjust for degree (speech/communication sciences) or for a particular program (CSUF)!

My only two options are Governors State in Chicago and The University of District of Columbia in Washington, DC. I need help deciding can anyone help?

I don't know much about those programs, but I would advise making a separate topic thread and asking your question there! Hopefully you will get responses that way. Good luck in your decision making.

  12. What can people tell me about transportation in Memphis? If I don't have a car, will I be able to get around places in the city? (If it makes a difference, I'd be going to the University of Memphis and living somewhere in East Memphis.)

  13. Does anyone have any information about the University of Memphis, especially from personal experience? What did you like or dislike about the program? What can you tell me about clinical placements in the Memphis area? I was accepted there and would love to hear more about the program than I can find out by the website!
