The Chicago Maroon Marketplace might be helpful for you. It's sort of like Craigslist, but just for the Hyde Park area, and there are lots of roommate/sublease listings. You may also want to see if there is a Facebook group for your incoming class? I'm going to UChicago, and an advisor from my college contacted us with a link to a Facebook group for all new students in my program. It couldn't hurt to find out if there's something similar for you, as well. Hope this helps!
  2. I'm booking my flight to Chicago for the UC Admitted Students Day! Can't believe it's coming up so quickly. I've also already started some remote interviews for my field placement. Fingers crossed that I get the one I want. ?
  3. I would consider what type of Social Work you're aiming to do with your MSW. For me, I focused on finding programs that emphasized macro practice. Plenty of MSW programs have concentrations that allow you to focus your coursework in a specific area, be it behavioral health, administrative social work, community organizing, etc. Also, as @mswguy said, looking into the research from universities can be very useful. A lot of programs - especially those from larger or more well-known universities - will have a section of their website solely dedicated to highlighting the research that's being conducted by students and faculty within that program. It's a great way to gauge what types of issues are being addressed by the school, and it can also give you a leg-up when completing applications if you mention that you've looked into the research and that it's relevant to your interests.
  4. Yeah, I got mine back the other day. I’m receiving roughly $6,000, and I am an independent filer with a low income, so I can’t imagine that it goes much higher than that. I’ve thought a lot about it, and I’ve pretty much accepted the reality that I’ll need 50-60,000 in loans in order to obtain my MSW from UC. It’s certainly not ideal, but considering I want to go into macro-level policy & research-oriented social work, I believe that the reputation of my educational background will play a role in my ability to advance in that field. I can’t speak for clinical and micro-level students, but at least in my case, I’ve reflected on this a lot and ultimately decided that the debt is worth it in order to attend such a highly-ranked school and in order to have a successful future.
  5. What do you mean by “negotiate additional funding”? I’ve seen a few other comments elsewhere suggesting that you might be able to convince them to raise your scholarship amounts, but I’m honestly not sure where people are getting that information. Scholarships are determined by merit, financial need, and the information contained in your application, so I don’t know that it’s as easy as calling someone and asking them to just give you more.
  6. I'd really like to play a role in macro-level social work. I'm interested in research and policy, particularly as it pertains to childhood trauma. I think that macro social work is often underappreciated, and there's definitely a need for social workers who are willing to conduct the research that informs our practice. Now, as far as getting there, I have quite a long path ahead of me. ?
  7. I received my physical acceptance letter the other day, and it said that this year was the largest and most competitive applicant pool that SSA has ever had. Congrats to everyone else who got in! I look forward to hopefully meeting anyone else who decides to attend.
  8. I'm in a similar position. This program is my top choice and I'm certainly happy with whatever they are able to provide, but I also get a little anxious when I start doing the math and figuring out how much I'll need to take out in loans. I'm trying to remind myself that at least I'll be in the advanced standing program, so I'll only have to take out loans for one year, unlike most graduate programs in other fields.
  9. It is a total amount. Since I am attending the Advanced Standing program, the length of the program is only one year, split into four quarters. The letter also mentioned that I may receive additional need-based scholarships once my FAFSA is reviewed in the coming weeks.
  10. Thank you! I was a bit nervous because I am fresh out of my BSW program and UoC was my top choice, but I am incredibly excited and honored. I'm very much looking forward to attending.
  11. I just got accepted to the Advanced Standing Program with a Dean's Distinguished Leadership award of $16,000 as well as an AmeriCorps Service Award of $1,500! I'm so excited!
  12. Advanced Standing students begin attending in the summer, so when you consider that students in this program will be required to find housing and living arrangements for just a few months from now, it's very likely that the admissions decisions go out earlier than for the other MSW programs.
  13. I contacted the admissions office a couple of days ago to ask when they would begin sending out acceptance notifications, and she told me that some of them should be sent out as early as this week. Hopefully we don't have to hang in there much longer! I am looking to attend the MSW Advanced Standing - Social Service Administration program.
  14. You might also want to see if the application portal has an option to send a reminder to your references. I had to do this recently with my UChicago application. It’s nice, because the email is automatically generated from the university rather than having to send it yourself.
  15. Thank you so much for this response - it's really helpful. UChicago is actually my first choice. I applied about a week ago. I have family and friends in that area, and it's not too far from home. I'm familiar with Case Western and actually spoke to a recruiter who really wanted me to apply. I wasn't too interested at the time because I'd honestly like to get out of Ohio, but it may be worth a second look. I'll be sure to do some more research into Columbia and UPenn as well. Pitt is very close to me and I would be automatically admitted due to my grades, but I'm not sure that it's the best fit for what I'm looking to do. Ultimately, I'd really like to conduct research that informs social work practice and policy. I've excelled in my Social Policy and Social Welfare courses, and have had several professors encourage me to pursue macro-based practice. I've tried looking into some Social Work-focused academic journals for inspiration, but it seems that much of the research conducted in our field is sort of scattered. It's kind of interesting, because it isn't like research isn't being conducted by and for social workers. You'd think that at least a few programs would emphasize this portion of Social Work, but it seems to be consistently overlooked from what I've seen.
  16. I'm currently in the process of applying to MSW programs for Fall of 2019. I'm particularly interested in macro-level practice, policy, and research. I'm one of those rare Social Work students that actually enjoyed my undergraduate classes in statistics and research methods, and I'm very interested in contributing to evidence-based practices in the future. I'm wondering if there are any schools that place more of an emphasis on this area of Social Work. I'd love to be able to conduct some sort of research during graduate school, but I'm not sure if there are certain programs that allow for these kinds of opportunities more than others. Any guidance would be appreciated. Thanks!
