For those of you who are being put up at a grad students home for interviews, are you getting a gift for your hosts? If so, what are you getting? Would love to hear from current grad students as well if you are on this form.

If you'd like to do something, a handwritten thank you note would be nice. But of course not necessary

  2. Have a response ready in case you get asked about what thesis/dissertation idea you might like to pursue. Did not find the question appropriate/fair but I did get it so would recommend to prepare for it just in case.

Also, be sure to let yourself behave naturally, without being a super professional robot who doesn't know how to be casual. A big thing PIs and current grad students consider is personal fit with them, so although it may sound cliche - be yourself (well, the most social version of yourself).

Speaking of waiting, anyone know if faculty have a "deadline" for extending their first choice offers? My first choice POI has basically said he wants to accept me if departmental funding issues are resolved, but I don't know when is an appropriate time to give up hope and accept my other offer (a great program I am thankful for, but not a great fit). Feeling worn down..

I'm in the exact same position. It is very difficult waiting to hear back from a program when it's so unpredictable whether you will be offered a spot or not..especially when you have another great offer that is waiting for you to respond. PM me if you want to talk!

Question about contacting programs. Weeks ago I asked a masters program about the status of my app. They said I would hear by about 2 weeks ago. Well I saw acceptances and rejections since then, but I haven't heard anything yet. Since April 15th is quickly approaching, I was wondering when I should contact them again. I don't want to be a bother, but like hey it's my future and I want to know what's going on. What should I do?

I'm in a similar situation and I'm going to reach out and ask for an update/clarification this week. I think it's the best way to go because I need to know so I can figure out my future!

Tried using the search function but my query was way too broad.

What are people's thoughts about applying to two programs at the same school, e.g. Clinical Psychology AND Counseling Psychology programs? There are research mentors in both departments that match my interests and I'd be happy to be accepted to either, but don't want to shoot myself in the foot with both programs by crossing some unspoken boundary.

I did that this round and didn't have any problems - they were in different departments. I would go for it.

Friends. How common is it to be asked about what you want to do for your dissertation or master's thesis etc? How much detail were  you asked about? Thanks!!

I have been asked it twice so I would definitely recommend to have an answer ready in case it comes up!

I know a similar question has been asked, but I don’t remember which thread and am looking for some feedback!

I was invited to interview at a school that is in the city where I live. The school knows I live locally and referenced it in my invite. After my invite, I got a message from a current student going over some details for the interview weekend and about setting up accommodations if I’m coming from out of town (it says feel free to ignore if you live locally). They offer to set you up to stay with a grad student if you’re coming from out of town. When this was discussed on one of these threads earlier, I remember people saying to stay with a student if given the opportunity. However, in this case, does it seem like I should not set that up? I live less than 4 miles away. There is a dinner with current students the night before interview day, and obviously I’m going that that.

What do you guys think? I think I’m overthinking everything bc I’m so excited/ anxious!!

In general, I think it is good to stay with a grad student, but since you live so close I don't think it would be worth it. I would personally prefer the comfort of my own home if I'm that close to the university. If you lived further (an hour or so away) then I would definitely stay with a student. Just my opinion though ?

    Hello everyone!

This is my first time applying and I'm pretty sure at this point I won't be getting any more interview invites. But I am wondering, do they eventually send you a rejection or just leave you on the cliff?? I'm dying here haha

I believe most send a rejection later on (March or April)

  9. What do you all recommend wearing for socials/dinners with grad students the night before interview day (for men and women)? For those that have already attended interviews, what did most people wear to the socials? Thanks! (I posted this in another thread but now that I see this one I thought it would be more appropriate here)
