So glad that you got into your other top choice! I think I'm still on the fence about what my top choice would be. All four of the programs I applied to have compelling strengths. The faculty member I'm most excited to work with at Penn actually isn't in the school of communication, so that may work against me; on the other hand, I know that they encourage interdisciplinarity and taking courses outside of the department. Next week is going to feel so long!

I just got accepted to the University of Michigan with a Rackham Merit Fellowship!!! I am stunned and so very happy, this school was my top choice and such a great research fit!

I am still checking the mail as soon as I get home from work everyday in hopes I will see a little envelope from Temple there. I'll let you know when that happens ? And then hopefully around that time you will get work on funding! With you being one of the first acceptances to go out I am sure they'd want to make the effort to give you some sort of sustainable funding. I am down to checking only once every hour (or maybe twice) so there's progress lol

    Thanks for your kind words!
Not an hour later I got an acceptance from UCSD--today is really whiplash! I honestly can't believe it--I've never been further west than South Dakota and they're flying me out for an open house!

Sorry to hear about the UW Madison result, @halcyonday. I'm sure your interview did go really well -- if they took the time to send you such a kind email, it means they really liked you. Don't let it knock you off your game for the next one.

Ou sounds like you have some choices to make! Tough decisions, tough decisions. Rooting for you as well, and super happy you are getting offers. Are you still waiting to hear from Temple about funding?
Yes it is ? I am trying to limit the amount of times I check the different portals daily and keep myself busy...lol

Hm, I'm not sure I would say Rutgers is my first choice. All other things being equal, Temple has more targeted resources and may be a better fit for my research. That being said, funding is a very important factor for me, and the Rutgers offer is excellent! I was not expecting to be offered a non-teaching fellowship, and that's extremely valuable in my situation.
Ouch, March is a long time to wait. I hope you hear back soon from the American options! I'm definitely rooting for you!

Hi! I'm super excited because I just got my first response from a school--an acceptance from one of my top programs. I feel like I should respond to the acceptance email with something like "Thank you so much! I am honored to have been accepted to this program and am incredibly grateful for this scholarship..." but I'm still waiting on seven other schools, so I can't accept their offer yet. I'm terrible with small social stuff like this, so any thoughts on how to proceed would be highly appreciated! Thanks.

I use something like what you wrote, plus "I will consider this offer most seriously."
I also emailed that to all the individual faculty I interviewed with + "thank you for the interview and the positive words you must have put in."
Don't know if this is appropriate but I feel comfortable sending these out, so that' what I did.

Might want to try something along the lines of:
"Thank you very much for the acceptance to your program!  I am very excited by the idea of attending (insert university) this (insert application term).  I will be taking this offer into serious consideration when making my final decision.  Thank you again for taking the time and providing me with the opportunity to share my passion in (insert field) with your university."
Universities like knowing you have multiple offers.  It makes them feel like they made the right decision, in my opinion.

What's the usual Canadian timeline, @jmc117? Do you expect to hear in February, or more like March?
Today I got my first funding offer! Rutgers offered me $25k/yr plus tuition, fees, and medical for four years, with no teaching requirement in the first year. I am over the moon! This also takes a bit of the sting out of the presumed rejection at Drexel, heh.
To those still waiting to hear back: stay strong! Good things are coming your way!

Every time my email dings I panic a little, because, you know. This time it was an email from the gardening website I frequent with the header "with POTATOES, the possibilities are endless!!" Needless to say, I feel a little silly... no news today.

That's me! Haha. Had to introduce a little levity into the English results thread-- 16 Duke rejections in a row posted on there! Knew I probably wasn't getting accepted to Duke anyway, and now I can continue hating their basketball team with zero guilt.

I had a 20 minute skype interview a few weeks ago with admissions committee members (not a POI). They pretty much asked what you mentioned reviewing: what I liked about their program specifically, what my research interests were, what I wanted to do with a PhD, and about some of the academic/research experience I had put on my CV. I'm not sure how it works in the humanities, but they probably just want to get a feel for you and make sure you're a serious applicant.

Have a couple questions ready to ask them too! Honestly I was crazy nervous the whole time, and asking questions about the program helped me get a handle on the conversation and end with a strong note.

Here me out. Forget about applying to schools. Imagine everything was centralized. All English departments were in one database. You upload all your stuff and list maybe some places you’d like to go. Departments then go through everyone and choose who they want to send offers to. Not considering any medievalists this year? Filter them out of the pool. This way, we’re not wasting time applying to schools that won’t consider us for hidden reasons, and maybe you fit at a school that you didn’t think to apply to. Is it too much work for committees? I dunno, they can figure it out.

Definitely! I'd also love to know about any upcoming conferences that you might be thinking of attending. I'm still new to the communications discipline and I'm looking for venues that would welcome work on gender and culture.
