  1. Due to overlaps, I think about half of my interviews are scheduled on alternate dates or have some other modification to the official interview weekend. I have first replied that I am enthusiastic to interview, specifically saying that I would like to come visit in person, but said that I unfortunately had a conflict/tight travel schedule and would not be able to make the official date/would have to miss some activities. I asked if it was possible to schedule an alternate interview date and expressed understanding and willingness to do a Skype interview if necessary. All programs offered to have me visit on another date but due to further scheduling problems, I am interviewing for one via Skype anyway.
  2. For a clinical program, I would take that to mean business casual at the most casual. So not a full suit necessarily, but I personally wouldn't go as far as to wear jeans.
  3. I have heard from MSU. The e-mail seemed to be part of a mass-emailing, but I have seen people reporting new offers since, so maybe it's still offering? My UH invite seemed to be POI specific, but their interview date is coming at the beginning of Feb...
  4. YES. Rejections put me on my right path for sure. PM me if you want. I'm a similar applicant who went through 3 bad rounds of applications before this one! I'm pulling for you this round of course, but I'm also happy to be an ear.
  5. I am unsure. My invite was late in the day yesterday and directly from my PI.
  6. I am not sure about Developmental, but I know that in Clinical, my PI let me know that not getting an in person invite wouldn't necessarily mean you wouldn't get an offer... Not sure what that means vis a vis phone interviews though.
  7. I have an interview invite from the Columbia campus. It was made by the PI and I have not received communication from anyone other than them. Edit: sorry for double post.
  8. School: University of Houston Type: PhD Date of invite: 1/8 Type of invite: email from PI Interview date(s): 1/31-2/1
  9. If by Illinois you mean the University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign, my PI suggested during our Skype call that the department would be meeting this week.
  10. I did my undergrad at the University of Virginia. Took no chemistry so I can't help you there, but I can say that Charlottesville, VA is a very livable city. Also, you can easily live there without a car. If you have any questions about UVA more generally or the Charlottesville area I'm happy to help.
  11. I am happy to help and will send you an answer via PM. Anyone else with more specific questions can PM me.
  12. I am open to coordinating with other students who are traveling to interviews. Feel free to contact me about any programs in my signature to which I have been invited for interview!
  13. I have been told that it is bad form to decline a previously accepted interview. Remember that unless you applied to a very diverse range of programs, that the PI who invited you is or will soon become someone in your field. I have gone with a first-come, first-accepted policy due to multiple overlapping interview dates and little pre-interview differentiation in ranking of programs/mentors. (I really want to suss out fit in person.). I don't think it can hurt to wait until 1/10, but remember that if you do get an offer from the other school, you can let them know that your travel schedule cannot accommodate that date and ask if it is possible to do an alternative interview, either in person or on skype. I've had good success with rescheduling and found programs to be really understanding and accommodating. I have only heard of one case of someone having an interview offer rescinded after asking for an alternative date (and this occurred years ago).
  14. I have applied to the Clinical-Community program at UIUC!
  15. Sure! It was a great experience both times. I have dietary restrictions and they accommodated them easily. I also got my cross-country flights reimbursed within about a month from the visit. While I would have loved to attend the program (applied twice, after all), I'm ultimately glad that they sussed out that the fit wasn't quite right, because it honestly wasn't and I'm glad that led me to a different, perfectly fitting path. Admissions decisions are made by committee but there must be a faculty member who is willing to be your primary mentor. (That's where my issue came in--waitlisted both times. Second time was explicitly told that I had people who would work with me, but couldn't/wouldn't take me as a primary advisee. One faculty member who I met on interview day actually reached out to see if we could match our interests, but the fit was very poor.) The interview was pretty typical--interview with faculty of interest and a couple others in the program as well and meet with students. You will also get a tour of campus and the on-campus housing (subsidized rent!). Faculty and students alike were very welcoming and friendly. It seems like a great place to study. However, as someone who has never lived on the west coast and had never visited LA the first time, there was a bit of a culture/environment shock for me. Irvine proper is a well-off and conservative planned community, and the university is very insular (many students and faculty live on campus), but I was assured that many students went to the beach regularly and to more culturally diverse parts of LA. Feel free to ask any specific questions here or in PM.
  16. I would suggest cold emailing a laboratory manager (or similar) instead of the PI themselves. We often know more about the day to day operations of the research and may have the authority to make these decisions. I know that any email of the sort my PI sees gets forwarded to me anyway.
  17. Clinical psychology PhD programs will not force you to make a decision until April 15th (http://www.cgsnet.org/april-15-resolution) but both programs and fellow applicants would appreciate that you release any offers you are not seriously considering much sooner.
  18. It will be very jurisdiction specific. I used to work in a related field and have known practicing criminal defense attorneys who have had charges of similar nature and severity. If you have someone in your field who you can confidentially discuss the matter with, including offense specifics and the specific forensic program/work you want to do, that will probably be your best resource. Good luck!
  19. I have applied to and interviewed at this program in previous years (2x). In my memory, they made interview offers before Christmas, but I might be misremembering. In any case they do a mass invite. I never had a preinterview.
  20. I believe Yale doesn't require the GRE.
  21. If we want this, we will make it happen. I'm on 4th round (okay... 5 if you count that year I applied to 1 school because of geographical restriction). And it took me all these rounds and 7 years post-undergrad to find my niche and own it. While I certainly don't want anyone else to have to wait this long and spend all this time and money, I just want to say that persistence (and self-discovery) are key.

  23. I wish that two dates thing was true in my field. ?
  24. Anyone hear anything from University of Rhode Island? I'm in interview scheduling hell and want to know if I can free up that date...
