Totally unrelated but the hotel SMU put interviewees up at is also being used for some kind of last round regional audition for Project Runway (overhead in hotel tavern yesterday). now as I’m waiting in the lobby for my shuttle to the airport I’m surrounded by over the top dressed creative types and the most obvious production assistant I’ve ever seen running around between them. I’ve been watching old seasons of PR the last few weeks trying to distract myself from the stress of waiting for results and now I’m trying to figure out if this is a good sign or a really, really bad one ?

This is definitely the right call. When I was at my first undergrad school, it was school policy that professors be called by their first names (I think it was something administration did to try to create community since it was a school built on odd circumstances). However, there were certain professors that I still called Dr. LastName because they preferred it. They just couldn't officially say to call them Dr. LastName, which kind of sucked for them. Long story short, if they insist that you call them by their first name, do so, otherwise just say Dr. LastName.

I would personally keep addressing them formally until they individually tell me to call them by their 1st name.

IDEA: If a school doesn't send any notification at all, they should obligated to refund the application fee.

In a few weeks, you'll find out where you're accepted, rejected or waitlisted. By now, I'm sure you're experiencing all sorts of highs and lows. This is a very stressful process. Sometimes, all you want is some news because you're starting to feel down about the process.

    Big News? You're alive.
-There are currently seven billion people alive today and the Population Reference Bureau estimates that about 107 billion people have ever lived.  -Having just a few coins makes you richer than most people on Earth.
-You are unique and nobody in the entire world is like you are
-The opportunity to attend school is something many people don’t have. (Which makes having a college degree even greater!)
-Most people lack a bed of their own to sleep in
-Many people on earth lack access to clean water.
-Cell phones make talking to loved ones easy.
-You have friends that will always have your back. (And if you don't, message me. Let's talk. And if you do, let's talk anyways)
-You can enjoy pizza. Or Ice Cream.
-There are people in your life who love you more than you could ever know -The Internet, n'uff said?   But in all seriousness, try not to compare yourself to others. We have a tendency to look at how great the lives of other people are going without realizing the stresses they're hiding. No matter where you get in or don't get in, please be proud of yourselves. You've worked incredibly hard to get to where you are. An acceptance doesn't determine who you are and a rejection doesn't make you lesser than. It just means not this year. You might realize that your passions change over the course of a year. And you might discover those new interests are really interesting when you do reapply. You might discover some universities that previously rejected you might accept you the following year and viceversa.   Lastly, a word on rankings:
USNews rankings for English are determined by 14 percent of respondents who were department heads or director of graduate studies. As such, it's hard to take rankings those seriously when a lot of the rankings are based on "name brand". Most departments are only paying attention to a few select schools and placements may vary considerably across specific interests. Follow your heart when making a decision. Happiness is the number one thing that will make you succeed in a program and that happiness will translate to the quality of work you produce.

Good luck all. You're going to do great!

i just want to chime in here to remind everyone that grad school admissions is only one way to get a rejection. for instance:
a prof on an admissions committee could've been rejected at any of these points. i don't know if making a sweeping accusation that they've never experienced rejection will make the sting of our rejection any less, but there's no reason to vilify people you've never met. for all we know, admissions committees have little control over when rejections are sent. some the rejections i've received during this process have come from the graduate schools, not the departments. there could be several layers of bureaucratic bullshit we're not seeing.

I received a second rejection from Victoria this morning. Seems odd that they have two? I am guessing one is automatic. It also came with this great tautology:
"Your application for admission to the University of Victoria has been carefully considered. We regret to inform you that your application has been refused for the following reason:
The Department of English has reviewed your file and cannot offer you admission."
    Enjoy!

Lol @ the drama with Brown on the results board. Am I the only one who thinks insulting other people’s online grammar is stupid and a cheap shot? Obviously we all know how to punctuate properly. It’s just so unnecessary to do it online/via text/etc constantly. lawwwwwwd have mercy.

That kind of stuff makes me so mad, it’s straight up rude and also has undercurrents of racism, ableism, and classism. We should all be better than that. Boo to those people.
