  1. Adding to this thread, could anyone please comment on the programs and atmospheres at Emory and UMass Amherst, specifically in the literature departments?

Will be really grateful, thanks! :)

P.S. extra gratitude for commenting on Druid Hills/Atlanta and Amherst/Northampton as places to live in! And for inputs on the cafés, bookshops, and libraries in the areas, too!

I am in a similar situation. I applied for the "English MA" choice. It seems like there are a few of us here that are awaiting a response. I don't know if there is an unofficial WL, because I was neither rejected nor accepted when the results first came, but, I am preparing for the former until I get proof of the latter.

I’m also assuming it’s a rejection until I see something else. But I see acceptances, rejections, and waitlists on the results board, so I just have no idea?

I haven't heard a peep from UW-Madison either, but preparing myself for a rejection. The waitlisted candidates seem to have been informed already, plus the status of my application on their portal still reads 'submitted'.

Hey folks waiting for responses from UW-Madison!

I applied last year and heard nothing until the end of March, when I finally decided to reach out to ask because it seemed all acceptances, waitlists, and rejections went out around the same time in January. Turned out I was waitlisted, but their system lost my notification. I was ultimately accepted off of the waitlist.

That‘s all to say that once everything seems to be in, and if you still haven’t heard anything, it’s okay to ask! I wish I would have asked sooner since I ended up having so little time to make a decision that I did it literally on April 15. I’m not sure how rare my situation was, but it’s clearly not impossible!

Thanks, @arbie for being so helpful!

It's really comforting to know that an implied rejection need not necessarily be an actual one, till a real rejection email has reached one's inbox! I'm thinking of emailing end-Feb-ish if I still haven't heard back from them!

    Hi all,

I've been lurking here for the last couple of weeks while waiting to hear back from the different programs I've applied to. It is truly a grueling process!

For the sake of transparency—or, I suppose, as much transparency as we can hope for (...)—, I just wanted to let you all know that I've been accepted to Wisconsin (Literary Studies). Just added the result now.

    Best of luck to everyone!

    Congratulations, @Heidelberger!

Does anyone want to claim the UW-Madison acceptance/waitlists from the results board? The last couple years notifications look staggered and then rejections come out a week or so later. I'm trying not to go crazy refreshing my email, but....

From last year's notifications it seems as though UW-Madison sends out a couple of acceptances late January, and then several acceptances and some rejections towards the first-second week of February? Perhaps they accept candidates in two separate batches in the same cycle (while also accepting off their waitlist much later down the line).

Trying desperately to cling on to hope here!

Ok dumb minute please, but how are you all seeing ‘decision pending’ on your applications?? Most of mine are through ApplyWeb and it just says ‘submitted’...

    I have the same question....

Yes, all my application statuses show up as 'submitted', including UChicago (which was an implied rejection) and Emory (where I landed an interview).

No official rejection email(s) yet either, though most of the schools I've applied to typically notify candidates between mid-Feb to early-March.

I'm guessing it'll take another couple of weeks, at least, for the portals to be updated/pending emails to be sent out.

I had the fortune to visit this college over Thanksgiving break, because of my gf's family and other factors. I drove through it. The surrounding area is quite nice, and it gives off a 19th century American "rustic" feeling, like the scenery in a Hawthorne book or something. Spatially, the campus looks quite large, and I understand it enrolls a lot of people.

I also applied there and did the Writing Center application. I don't have any more information, but just wanted to provide a couple of comments because it sounds like you're interested in it.

Thanks, @HPurple! I can see that you and I have 5 schools in common where we've applied to for Fall 2020!

Hello! Has anyone heard back about being a Luce Scholar Finalist? Had my interview a while ago and thought I would hear back by now? I see there haven't been any forums for this fellowship before!

I'd applied to the Luce scholarship for PhD at UDelaware! Haven't heard back from either place yet! Which program did you apply to?

When I applied 3 years ago I got my acceptance from UMass mid-February. They didn't have any interviews or correspondence in between. After acceptance, you have to have an interview for the teaching assistantship though.

Thanks so much, that's really helpful! Amherst is such a literary place, it'll be so wonderful to hear back from them positively!

I remember having to fill out a separate funding application (for TA-ship at the Writing Centre), so I'm guessing it's the Writing Centre that interviews you after acceptance from the dept?

I don't believe they have formal interviews, but I might be mistaken. And after (obsessively) trolling past decision dates, UMass Amherst start sending out acceptances by the second week of February usually.

Hey, thanks! I found out the same thing about UMass Amherst, but hoping they notify slightly earlier this year! The wait is already beginning to appear so stressful.

I spoke to someone from Uva eng lit earlier and she said that she'd Skyped with her potential supervisor before accepting the offer -- not sure if the formal offer was sent before the skype session, or after.

  11. Does anyone know if UDelaware (eng lit) and UMass Amherst (eng lit) do interviews? Do they generally send out direct admission offers, or ask for at least one session with POIs before extending official offers?

Also, could someone also tell me around what time they historically notify applicants?

Thanks in advance for your help! :)

Hm! All very intriguing. I'm trying not to get my hopes up about being on a possible long list, and although I think I'd be feeling the exact same way as some of you if I hadn't received the email yet, I also think it's too soon for anyone to go crying themselves to sleep! I've been digging through last year's thread and it looks like Chicago might send out interview requests in multiple waves, in which case it may just be that you haven't received your emails yet. Let us know – you might get an email tomorrow!

Good luck to you though! Rooting for you :)

Congrats! I also got invited to a Skype interview as I'm from abroad. Would be great to hear if anyone else here got good news!

Emory U invited me to a Skype interview, too! I'm an international applicant as well.

Congratulations to everyone who received good news, and good luck to everyone who's yet to hear! Although Emory is one of my top 3 places, I'm still waiting to hear back from the rest of my schools, it being still quite early in the application season! :)
