  1. There are many ways to become proficient in English. Here are a few tips for you: - Focus on communication. Hire an ESL teacher or find a speaking partner to improve your speaking skills. - Watch a lot of American TV shows. You can use “shadowing” to improve your pronunciation. - Listen to podcasts. They’ll help you with your listening skills. - Read books in English. You can read graded readers penguin or MacMillan. - Study grammar as well. It should not be your number one priority, but grammar is important. My favorite authors are Raymond Murphy
  2. Congratulations, your life isn’t easy! I’m also a dad starting grad school this year (fall). I have two kids, a son and a daughter, and my daughter is autistic. I’m an entrepreneur here in Brazil, but I’m quitting everything and moving with my family to the States. I know it won’t be easy, but this graduate program is one of my biggest dreams in life.
  3. I believe you’re a strong candidate! 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
  4. It’s completely possible. I’m an international student and I’m applying to three programs in Linguistics. Also, all programs accept foreigners.
  5. Everything you said makes sense. I emailed my POI yesterday to know if she had any updates on my status, and this is what she replied: It's a perfectly reasonable question! We had a larger than normal number of applicants this year, so it is taking us a bit longer than usual to make our admission decisions. You should expect to hear from us in the next 2-3 weeks.
  6. Nope! Most embassies and consulates are closed. They’re only issuing emergency visas.
  7. How do they know it’s been exceptionally competitive this year? 🤔🤔🤔
  8. Thanks, guys! The interview was great. I took a deep breath before I turned on the camera and tried not to be nervous. There were only two professors and they were really nice. We talked for about 18 minutes (it was supposed to last 15 minutes). They asked me to talk about my current job (I’ve been a teacher for 17 years), why I chose Iowa State, my areas of interest, and if I would like to teach writing to native and non-native undergrad students. My POI said they will now present my case to the Applied Linguistics faculty and I’ll soon receive an update. Thanks
  9. I’ll be interviewed in 3 hours. I’m so anxious.. I couldn’t even sleep tonight. Cross your fingers 🤞🏻
  10. Thanks for answering my question, guys! I have good news. My PI emailed me a couple of days ago and said my application is among those selected for the next step, the interview. I’ll be interviewed this Wednesday. Wish me luck! 😃
  11. <10%??? 😲😲😲 What about the acceptance rate for MA programs? Should I apply to more schools? 🤔
  12. 7 more to go? You guys apply to too many schools! Good luck!
  13. 900 views!!!! Jeez!!! I’m applying only to MA programs (2 Applied Linguistics/TESL programs and 1 Linguistics). The schools are Iowa State (it’s definitely my favorite program), University of Alabama, and University of Illinois.
  14. Yes. It’s enough to pay for my dependents as well.
  15. What about my dependents? I have full scholarship. Who’s paying for my dependents? My institution? 🤔
  16. Just forget it and focus on the other documents. I’m also applying to a few MA TESOL programs. Fortunately, they waived the GRE! 😅
