  1. I only applied to 3 schools! ??? BTW, congratulations on your acceptances! Have you decided which offer you’ll accept?
  2. Hi, Amelia! Me again! I had a blast yesterday. I was interviewed by 4 professors, they asked me only 4 questions, but we talked for 31 minutes. It was really amazing and I believe they liked the chat. UIUC is an awesome university. I just hope I get in! Good luck on your interview! I’m rooting for you!
  3. Why are you worried about that? Just because you got a rejection? Everyone is different, but I think 5 is enough!
  4. Hi, Amelia, Thank you so much for your detailed description of the interview. In fact, I applied to the MATESL, so your tips will help me a lot. It’s so interesting you mentioned they’re student-centered and against grammar/lecture focused. I’ve used TBL and Communicative Approach for 18 years, so I believe I’m a good fit! ? Sorry for not being able to help you with your interview. The good thing is that you already know the faculty members. You’ll nail this interview. ????for both of us!
  5. Has anyone ever been interviewed by UIUC? If so, can you please tell me how it went. I believe I’ll be interview this Saturday.
  6. Just be yourself! Everything is going to work out well! My first official interview (I say official because I’ve been interview by lots of professors before applying to the programs) happened in December and it was really easy. They asked me just a couple of questions, it wasn’t longer than 20 minutes. They just wanted to know about my research and if I’d be willing to teach Composition to native (and non-native) undergrad students. You know, at the moment I thought “I nailed this interview”, but after a few hours I realized I could’ve done better. Instead of answering “I’m okay with that. I have experience teaching native and non-native students”, I should have said “It will be an amazing experience. I’m sure I’ll enjoy it because I like challenges... blah blah blah” ? Which is true!!!! Even though I have 18 yrs of experience teaching all kinds of students, I’ve never taught undergrad students. But it’s too late now.... I hope they liked my interview anyways. I’m pretty sure you’ll do great! ?
  7. That’s awesome! Congratulations! ? ? I’m happy for you!
  8. Sure! Ask the interviewer! You spent time and money to apply to this program, it’s their “obligation” to explain why they rejected you. I’m certain you’ll be accepted somewhere else this year!
  9. Hi everyone, I’m just curious to know if I was the only one to apply to the Applied Linguistics/TESL program at Iowa State University! ????? If you applied to this program, let’s talk about it here! ?????
  10. I’m so really sorry to hear you got a rejection today! ?? I hate this admitted/rejected game. If I were you, I’d ask my POI why I was rejected. It’s important to know why you’ve been rejected in case you want to reapply in the future.
  11. There are many ways to become proficient in English. Here are a few tips for you: - Focus on communication. Hire an ESL teacher or find a speaking partner to improve your speaking skills. - Watch a lot of American TV shows. You can use “shadowing” to improve your pronunciation. - Listen to podcasts. They’ll help you with your listening skills. - Read books in English. You can read graded readers penguin or MacMillan. - Study grammar as well. It should not be your number one priority, but grammar is important. My favorite authors are Raymond Murphy and Betty Azar. - Follow me on Instagram for daily pronunciation tips. ?I’m on Instagram as teacherivancrespo. Hope it helps!
  12. Congratulations, your life isn’t easy! I’m also a dad starting grad school this year (fall). I have two kids, a son and a daughter, and my daughter is autistic. I’m an entrepreneur here in Brazil, but I’m quitting everything and moving with my family to the States. I know it won’t be easy, but this graduate program is one of my biggest dreams in life.
  13. I believe you’re a strong candidate! ????????
  14. It’s completely possible. I’m an international student and I’m applying to three programs in Linguistics. Also, all programs accept foreigners.
  15. Everything you said makes sense. I emailed my POI yesterday to know if she had any updates on my status, and this is what she replied: It's a perfectly reasonable question! We had a larger than normal number of applicants this year, so it is taking us a bit longer than usual to make our admission decisions. You should expect to hear from us in the next 2-3 weeks.
  16. Nope! Most embassies and consulates are closed. They’re only issuing emergency visas.
  17. How do they know it’s been exceptionally competitive this year? ???
  18. But it’s still early, London. I was interviewed because I applied in October, but I only heard from one school so far... I guess I’ll only if I got in January or February. Perhaps it’s different if you apply to other fields, but I still think most programs will only send the results next year ( well, we’re not so far ?)
