Your Thoughts on Ranking Canadian Anthro PhD Programs
anthropologygeek replied to Canis's topic in Anthropology Forum
Ut, UBC, and Albany are well recognized in the physical side at least and just as prestigious as any other physical programs -
Nadi- I'm not forensic but I do try to attend AAFS and have many friends in so called forensic programs. Some got in without publishing. Also MSU only accepts students from a certain back east university. And I know Florida always says they are taking students but rarely due but if they don't you can apply the next year without repaying the app fee, from a friends experience. Also since you are applying for forensics may I ask why you aren't applying to alot of the best forensic programs? Are you a masters student applying or an undergrad? Depending on that I may be able to help you with some other university such as undergrad applying what about Texas state university or masters student what about Ohio State. Publishing is good if it is the correct type. I could pay 10 dollars and get whatever I wanted publish or send it to a low level journal but those are the same as not doing or presenting is only good at major conferences and posturing holds very little little opinion for the admin committee

Antha I like to keep my identity a secret and that answer would be jeopardizing it

Schools don't care about the recs letters coming in on time. The schools understand since they have profs who sometimes don't send in recs on time and its out of the students hands. All just want them before the committee meets which is at least a week after the deadline and even then they will look at the app without all the letters and sometimes even accept the student with the understanding they will get the recs in before they start

Wide- they have a good program. Most years they don't take any forensic phd's. Funding is limited and very competitive for the anthro department. I have a friend currently there. Had funding in years 1-3 no funding 2-4

Teaching Positions and Department Politics
anthropologygeek replied to Silent_Bobina's topic in Teaching
Yu should not transfer over this and this is something you must just put up with. Why not do some sucking up yourself? Plus why not teach alittle at a junior college for the teaching experience -
You can submit everything before recs come. Most of the time they are done last minute and sent to the school by person doing the rec.

No sleep- they do value the AW score though. My understanding most programs want at least 4.5
-
Fan- I also don't have time to go to more than 2-3 conferences a year. And I want them paid for so it would be pretty insane to present or poster at more than 2-3 a year
-
if you do not present you can not include the presentation. If your name is not in the program it doesnt count. It sucks if they did this to you but stuff like this happens and you know never to work with them again. I remember a prof asked my friend if they could do separate research them come together and combine it into one paper and my friend was left off the publication all together. It sucks and I may be harsh but I have seen this so many times I guess I'm over it. If you do include this as a presentation and they check on it there goes your shot at that school. When I present I do all the work myself. When I write the article depending on the persons involvement is determines if I include them and what order. I don't help unless I'm first author since I'm to much of a control freak. Also, one thing to keep in mind schools look at what conferences you presented and what journals. That's why I never waste a presentation or a poster at small conferences an only submit articles for big journals. Just some food for thought. And again I may sound harsh but guess what we are in a harsh field of survival of the fittest

How much work did you do? Are they presenting on the part you helped on? Also, this makes your cv look like you don't have enough legit things so your just trying to fluff it up. I would lave it off. And they will probably thank you in a presentation but until they publish it you have no rights to it. You can say you have research experience and list this as part of your experience

I never go AAA. Way to focused on culture and primates for me. I prefer AAPA'S in the spring

Comps is not a masters exam. Comps and proposal is what you do to stop being a phd grad student and you can stop taking classes. It focuses on your research solely your research. It is like 150 articles directly on your research and you have to memorized them, then take a written test that you must site the articles in your answers. At my school You get 4-5 questions and have 6 hours to do it over a five five back to back days and then oral exams over those articles for three back to back days. It takes over a year to prepare and pass. Plus you can't possible began the list until after your classes since they provide a lot of the resources in preparing your list.

Grad school means priority: research>publications>adviser projects>classes>assistantship. Research and publications is how you get jobs and a job with your adviser contacts/recommendations. So if this means you don't sleep for say two nights so be It. It's gad school. About half of all students drop out. I fact I came in with 4 other students with my adviser and there's only two of us left. If your having trouble now reevaluate where your time is going because next year year you will at at least be putting together your reading this for comps, and the comps animal is much worst than any class load could ever be

Apply and get your masters

To travel or not to travel during winter break?
anthropologygeek replied to shockwave's topic in Anthropology Forum
If you can afford it go for it or maybe do a field school? -
I don't think a nose ring will hurt if its tiny on the day. Now if you also have a lip ring and a chain from your nose to your lip then yeah that may be a problem
-
Strud- make sure you have questions ready to ask. And define the piercings. Are they just in the ear? Can they be classy? Of course if they are just out there to draw attention and looks hideous I would take them out
-
Strud- when I took it, old scoring system but on the computer, if you missed one of the first couple your score will be low
-
When I was applying I set it up through the poi
