Anyone having any luck getting off a waitlist at the last minute? Fingers crossed for everyone still waiting!

Just had an interview for a school I was on the waitlist for! Makes it a little difficult since this is also the deadline for other acceptances but I'm sure we're all navigating as best we can. Good luck to everyone if you are waiting on news!

  2. Crowdsourcing opinions here -

How likely is it that a school will let me defer my PhD acceptance? And if it were you, how would you go about that conversation (email first to POI, request a call with program director, etc.)? I currently have 1 acceptance and it's from a school that has you secure your own GA after admission (thinking this might be a plus since they haven't already slotted me into a position).

As brief background, my partner and I are expecting and I am due in November. We've considered all the options and have decided that giving birth in the middle of the first semester isn't the start I'd like to have and financially, it doesn't make sense to lose out on my generous maternity leave. Any advice would be helpful if you or someone you know has been through this process of deferring!

Same! I wouldn't give up hope yet. I had contacted them to get some sense of when I might hear back either way and they told me I was first on the waiting list. I don't think not having heard anything necessarily means you're rejected! I think their rollout of offers is just a little different than most schools.

Thats so exciting! For Pop Health? Fingers crossed for you. I'll definitely send them a note

  4. Anyone else laughing at some of these generic emails from schools? Just got a "Join us for a Virtual Open House" general email from Northeastern's Grad School. Applied back in November and heard nothing back (assumed rejection since the acceptances went out) and now this email. This process can be so strange, you have to laugh sometimes!

I'm (kind of) in the same boat! I found out I'm pregnant and due in early/mid Nov, and am waiting on 1 school. I so badly want to get in and do this, but if they let me in I'm going to have to have the "love you and your program, just don't think it would be the best idea for me to have my first kid (hopefully! ?) 2 months into the first year of the PhD program" chat ?

Sending you a message! We are totally in the same boat. Not looking forward to that conversation :)

Hi everyone - long time lurker first time poster. I am freaking out because I've been struggling with infertility for some time...was about to go in for some tests when I actually got pregnant. I'm only about 5.5 weeks but hCG is wayy better than last time, so it's all very fresh. But I'm freaking out because this is my first, I have wanted this baby for so long, and I have wanted to go back for my PhD for so long too. I got in to my top choice program this Fall and I'm beyond thrilled but now I have this to contend with and have no idea what to do. I have no idea if this pregnancy will last; my last one ended in a miscarriage so I'm not getting attached until I get an ultrasound and confirmation from the OB, but still the anxiety is through the roof right now.

I think I'm just looking for advice from all of you on how and when to navigate this discussion. The first year is coursework and doesn't seem flexible!? I don't want people to think I don't take school or research seriously (and the irony is, I'm going into maternal and child health), and I don't want to ruin any relationships that could effect my career in the future.

Sorry this is all over the place. Any insight would be most appreciated.

WOW. I just came to this thread to post the exact same question as you. I'm right around 6 weeks and would be due early November (fingers crossed everything works out). I'm pretty set on the fact that I won't be able to start my PhD next year because I really want to take advantage of some good company and state maternity leave but I have no clue how to have the "please please pretty please let me defer a year" conversation. I understand completely where you're coming from - this is a very wanted and exciting pregnancy but I also still care deeply about my PhD opportunities.

Do you have any acceptances yet that you're trying to navigate? Feel free to send me a message directly if you'd like! Would love to chat more with someone who is in the same boat.

I agree. I think the Fauci Effect is all too real and many people who were out in trenches of public health for years (like myself) are looking to retool for more prominent positions—which often require or prefer those with doctorates. Barring some large downside, I would not give up a spot in a program in the hopes that you’ll roll the dice and be even luckier next time. My grandma calls that “hustling backwards”  (and that’s not a good thing).

Also, I see a lot of folks really focused on a brand name or a ranking. Forget that. Will this program get you to where you want to be (ie will your butt be working in a career of your choosing)? And will you be able to make an impact along the way? If the money is right and you’re answering “yes” to those questions, what more could you ask for?

I love this perspective! So true, thanks for bringing us all back down to reality. If we really think about it, we are all so incredibly lucky to have the educational background, work experience, support from partners/family/friends, and the resources needed to be going through this process. Not that knowing that takes away from all the stress involved but it's a fun reframing for when we get too wrapped up in things.

Hi, I have the same question as well, so I got into a couple of good programs but not top tier epidemiology programs. I will also have 2-3 first-author pubs if I choose to gap another year and probably can work as a biostatistician in between (I am a part-time biostatistician in this project now). I guess my biggest concern is that I will not be able to have as many research/networking opportunities as I could in bigger schools and my goal is to stay in academia after grad program.

Thank you in advance for your help!!

I'm on the same page as @ASA15. The rank is one piece of the puzzle (and obviously more important if you're trying to stay in academia) but so is your advisor match, the city you'll be living in, the funding and impact on your quality of life, etc. etc. If it was me, and most of those conditions seemed to be met, I would want to accept an offer this year and keep the momentum going to attend in the Fall. Again, that's a personal preference and my outlook is - regardless of where I go (within reason :)), there will be good things that come out of it.

    Congrats on the interview!

To your question: Totally dependent on the school, so I wouldn’t worry too much. I say this for the programs where positions are abundant, not those Hunger Games type programs where you’re having to knife fight in the basement for a job every year.

Thank you! Super helpful to know this is somewhat standard. Definitely alleviating a little bit of panic

  10. Hi friends. I had an interview today for a program and left a little confused about how their funding works. Is it normal for programs to send acceptance without funding information and start the process to decide funding and GA/RA positions after that? I always figured an acceptance would come with funding information and some information about the potential GA/RA position. Am I totally off base? Or does it depend on the school?

Thank you in advance for your input!

@dr_megaevilThank you for starting this thread! I am in a similar situation as @cs4152008. I do not have children yet, but am planning on starting sometime during my doctoral program. It is so helpful to hear from others who are planning to or who already have children. I really appreciate when programs address this topic and state that they are supportive of students who plan on having kids. I hope that most programs are flexible and supportive.

Have any of you gotten a feeling from programs regarding whether classes will be in-person or virtual in the fall? I know how hard it is to predict what will happen between now and then, but it would really help with planning purposes for those who would be moving to a new city! I imagine those with children would especially want to know this.

I haven't asked about the virtual or in-person question but great reminder to send as a follow up to interviews. On your first point about supportive and flexible programs - does anyone have any great ways to ask about this during interviews? Yesterday during a call I basically said "you must see students in a phase of life when they may be building families, dealing with aging parents, etc. How do you support students with their outside responsibilities?". Anyone have any better ways that I can steal?!

  12. Agreed, thanks for starting this! I don't have much to add as we don't have kiddos yet but would like to in the next year or so which would make me a first year PhD student. My partner works nights right now (which could change) and it's a great job but we would have to get very creative about how to manage everyone's schedules. We also will likely be moving away from family (his) since it doesn't look like I'll be getting into any Boston-based programs so there goes the free childcare :) When the time comes, I'm hoping we can find a good solution for babysitting/daycare while I am in class but I'd love to not have to do that all day. Does anyone have thoughts on this?

Also, when school go fully in person do you guys anticipate spending most of your time outside of class and GA responsibilities on campus doing work or home doing work? I have worked remotely for years so am much more comfortable being productive at home but am a little worried about the appearance of not being on campus as much as others (silly thing to worry about, I know!).

These made my day! ? We've been trying to have a kid and I was seriously questioning my sanity for going for my doctorate while potentially (hopefully?) having a kid during the program. Seriously feel like there may be tears of joy that there are other parents (or soon-to-be parents!) that are embarking on this exciting journey as well. So proud of all of you!!!

I'm in this boat too! No little ones yet but hopefully soon. I thought I was crazy but either we are all crazy or it's doable (with good support and some planning). Would love to hear more about how you guys are planning to make it all work.

Arizona is not showing me any love and I live here! ?‍♀️

Anyone out there apply to the University of Arizona (Health Behavior Health Promotion)? It’s been radio silent, and I don’t have a good sense of if they interview or not. I wonder if there has been any movement (like I’m willing to count a status change from submitted to under review as a W at this point. ?).

I applied and have seen zero updates!

Graduate application to Brown U DEEPS - I was interviewed virtually by the POI in October 2020 and was strongly recommended to apply. AND the POI informally welcomed me to the research group at the end of the interview.

Last week though, I contacted my POI and I was told that they have submitted their ranked lists (I'm in the list) to the admission committee, and now admission committee is working on the final decisions based on the available budget, the rankings, and balancing requests across the department. This is the part that totally confused and concerned me about the final results. Do you know what the ranked list is? I need your opinions as I'm dying here from anxiety! ?

Someone in this group might have some intel about the ranked list but this is a Public Health forum and the process may vary between programs. Is there a forum in GradCafe related to DEEPS you could also ask the question to?

Have any of you had pre-application meetings with POI in Harvard PHS program? I was just curious about interviews as they encourage students to talk with POI however says there are no interview requirements.

    @HPM21

     @smusdent @healthyplanet

I had a few good meetings with PHS and Health Policy POI at Harvard last fall before submitting my applications. But I haven’t heard anything and didn’t interview so I’m not sure how much that really helped me out :)

Happy Friday everyone! Wanted to share that I got an interview with Nevada. Not a crazy top ranked program like some of you guys :) but I’m pumped to finally hear news. I’m a little untraditional of an applicant with no formal research experience and limited publications so it felt nice to get an interview invite!

You guys are so supportive! Thank you!
