  1. Favorite article: Caravaggio & Violence by John Varriano. As far as my favorite art history book, there are simply too many to list. I'll read anything by John Varriano, David Stone, Richard Spear and Philip Sohm (especially when they collaborate), James Elkins (even though I don't always agree with him), and Irving Lavin to name a few.
  2. Haha!!! Oh no! I've never heard of it, but it sounds like I'll HAVE to read it now, for the amusement! Heh
  3. I absolutely agree! Both about the good books, and the existence of innumerable bad ones My site takes its name from Garrard's book! I almost applied to AU so I could work with her.
  4. Starting to think I won't hear anything until the last week of February & 1st week of March at this rate!

What LLajax said. And is it not worth waiting for good news? :-)

  5. Ick! If he really is obsessed with his scholarship, he should probably spend more time on his book outlines. (Sorry, had to say it because it's true. ) What is your specialty? Italian Baroque?
  6. Hehe! That's so awesome! It sounds like a gorgeous campus and an even more gorgeous state. I've never been to MA, but my parents have regaled me with stories. So happy for you!
  7. Yay! Congratulations!
  8. I second katiemk1230 - a long, hot and candlit bath, and lots of sweet desserts. Maybe I'll get a facial and massage... ahhh I'd also like to get a new laptop, or at least figure out what's been going wrong with the one from my undergrad years.
  9. What on earth? Are they missing a zero on the end of that $3,500? Plus tuition? Geez.
  10. Obama is coming to my neck of the woods & traffic is supposed to be awful. That will distract me! Yay! ... I think...

  11. Stilnovista - for some reason my browser isn't letting me quote, but anyway, it's "Bernini: His Life and His Rome," by Franco Mormando. I'm really disappointed in this book so far. I expected a lot coming from Mormando since I enjoyed some of his previous work on the Jesuits and on Caravaggio. Have you read it?
  12. That's no good! I haven't heard of it, so I looked it up in Google and it has 3 1/2 stars on GoodReads. I'm disappointed. You'd think that people writing books from "Queen Mary, University of London" would produce something pretty awesome.
  13. What's the worst art history book you've ever read? I'm reading one right now, a biography of Bernini, and although the research and information presented is commendable, the author keeps going off on tangents and making sweeping baseless comments about other artists without providing evidence (e.g. Bernini's competitor, Artist Y, was totally crazy and unstable). It's frustrating because I really want to like this book and recommend it, but I just can't when the author continually leaves out support for the broad statements he makes. At first I thought, "Oh, he'll support it in a couple pages after this tagent." Nope. So, anyway, this is one of the worst books I've read because of the organization and lack of support. What are some of yours?
  14. Haha!!! A couple weeks ago, I got a gorgeous envelope in the mail from one of my programs. My husband tried to read through the envelope by holding it up to light but all he saw was "Thank you for applying to ..." I was at work, so I had him open it and ... It was a three page letter thanking me for applying and with instructions on how to get into the school's application status check site.

    CAA 2012

Drool... I would've loved to be in that talk. That and Philip Sohm's Caravaggiomania talk.

    CAA 2012

Are any of your POIs going to CAA? Only one of mine is, which is pretty remakable considering there are 11 others!

    CAA 2012

Yay!! Congratulations on finishing up your MA! What's your thesis about?
  18. Thanks everyone! I've decided that I didn't really want to go there anyway, since attending would have meant modifying my research interests in a pretty big way and even though I was indeed interested possible modified topic, it's not what I've been "training" for. This morning, I did my morning check of application status pages and of course saw nothing new, but I suppose that's good and at this point, I'd like to think for all of us that no news is good news. I sure hope they get decisions out by CAA!
  19. 1st official news is a rejection. Awesome.

  20. Just got rejected from Northwestern. That's the first official news I've had. I really, really hope this doesn't start a trend... I feel pretty awful at the thought.
  21. Haha! Oh, I know. I just hope those folk that you're waiting on decide quick. I'm sure that waiting for that is worse that what we're going through now - just plain old waiting. I swear if I don't hear good news soon my brain is going to collapse in on itself.
  22. The way it should be!!! take yourself out tonight!
  23. AHHHH!!!!!!! CONGRATULATIONS!!!!!! :D Ahhh!!!!!! <3 They're so romantic.
  24. 5pm on the East Coast and no news for me here in Cali. :( Bah.

  25. Congratulations! It's better than a rejection Although I totally understand the anxiety that comes from that... I think that I'm waiting for Northwestern to reject me but I'm not positive. Come on, Northwestern, you know you want to put me out of my misery...
