  1. If it makes you feel better, mine is the same. I doubt it really makes you feel better though as it doesnt make me feel good - but I suppose it means they are working on our applications? (I am also a direct applicant)
  2. Myriadways - what is your concentration please?
  3. Is there much of an alternate scene - as in, bars, live bands etc ( local or otherwise)
  4. not knowing is going to drive me fruit piss loopy.... worse still - im in the UK so I have to wait for the damn letter to get here!
  5. hahah I liked your disclaimer. I am excited to freeze into an ice block. Or rather, I am not at all, but I am following a supervisor and therefore will suck it up. I know one person there too. I am thinking of applying to the grad housing - furnished, shared so its mildly cheaper but still on par with Toronto - I figure it would be the easiest thing to do first year, and then I can move on once I have figured out where I'd like to live, got a car or whatever When I was there I liked Whyte ave area.. Great to meet someone else in the English department though! I was very pleased to get in!
  6. Marshall - my application said it was missing tons of stuff too online - but for my department (english) they notified us when the deadline hit saying if we were REALLY missing stuff (which naturally I was - all my references as my other Uni are apparently useless) - Hope you get in too!
  7. Heya - I have been offered a PhD place at UofA for English - congrats! - waiting to hear back on funding before I accept - but I am 99% sure I will. Where are you coming from and do you know anyone else there? Have you figured out where youre going to live etc ?
  8. If I were you I would contact the school via phone and just say "i just want to clarify that this means X prior to signing" etc. It sounds to me as if your tuition is deducted prior to you receiving the assistantship - but it is rather poorly written (ever noticed how many typos there are on Uni websites - I had two in my offer letter - fills you with faith eh) The other part - why did they give you two dates? Sorry... I am not much help other than to affirm that they are a confusing bunch.
  9. U of A is the first to come back - they are known for it - the others will be back soon - good luck x
  10. someone on the results page said they had applied to 180 schools... I didn't even think that was possible (are there that many schools!?) also, applying like that is terribly like Veruca Salt... "daddy, I will get a golden ticket... daddy I will get into University anywhere!!!" not very selective..
  11. Thats great to know - ive spent about 36 hours tops in Edmonton - it seemed alright and I am pretending the cold doesn't exist as my priorities are obviously with working with my chosen supervisor but the not knowing anyone out there part is a bit daunting but will probably make me produce the most mind bending thesis ever since I will just have to hibernate and write (or get good at snowboarding ) Obrera - where have you applied and for what? (hope you hear soon)
  12. UofAlberta has sent out acceptances and rejections on the same day for english - if this helps
  13. ha I just saw you are at UofW - I am pretty sure Edmonton is a northern Windsor... if you can stand windsor you can handle anywhere no
  14. haha Hey - no they didn't but I have already visited in Dec and met all the profs and seen the campus. I am not local (in the UK). I only applied to two places as there are really only two people I wanted to work with for my work - so its here or Carleton. I am less fussed about the city than the relationship with my supervisor. I think everyone applying to Alberta is offered full funding for PhD but I could be wrong - certainly is the case for English.
  15. heya, Just so I am clear - if you applied directly to the SSHRC and you do not make the 'A' list via direct application then you will be notified anytime this month saying "sorry try again if you can handle the stress of fitting 900000 words onto a postage stamp" but if you DO make the grade, then you hear nothing until April - May when you will either get the above response or a "get out your party hat, champ" msg (or of course option C - 'waiting list'). Is this right? So hearing nothing in Feb is a GOOD thing?
  16. I'd say don't be terrified but I know it won't offer you much solace until you hear since I have been terrified too up until today - but I do hope you have good news when you do hear and I hope that you hear soon x
  17. Program is spelt the same in both countries.. but it is effects not affects no?
  18. sorry - should have been more specific - I meant Alberta not Arizona but thank you for the congrats
  19. Just got an e-mail from the english department offering me a place - so for those waiting - emails are coming out now!
  20. I'll do a trade if you want? Mines on English/film/cultural studies for PhD so not that far off?
  21. Hiya, I have been trying to write my PhD SoP and think I have managed to finally explode my brain. I have never written an SSHRC proposal, am not Canadian and I am not affiliated with any Universities. In short, I have almost no resources to 'go to' to get guidance. A proof reader, new set of eyes and any suggestions would be so very welcome. I can PM what I have written so far. I would be happy to trade/exchange. I should add: it seems very difficult to write a SoP for an arts PhD - I have no statistics or figures to justify this research - when writing about 'political consciousness' I cannot state (as I might be able to in Education for example) a hard fact (such as 65% of aboriginals cannot read - I am making this up to prove a point) How you substantiate research need within the arts!? Answer on a postcard [or a PM] please! Thank you!
