  1. I've lived in Montreal for 7 or so years and have done two degrees here (just finishing up one in English at McGill). I'd be happy to answer any questions you might have as well! My decision was easy, as I was only accepted to two funded PhD programs (out of five). One of them is here in Montreal. As much as it pains me to leave this incredible city, after doing two degrees here it is definitely time to move on. And the other happens to be my dream program. Whew!
  2. Has anyone received an actual rejection from Harvard yet? I'm assuming that mine is on the way... but want to be certain before I officially accept another offer.
  3. I can't speak for all schools either, but at McGill I think that most MAs get TAships by their second semester, or for those doing the thesis option, for sure by their second year. So I guess it varies.
  4. I and a few others I know got acceptances to the McGill MA on Wednesday. We were all internal applicants... not sure if that makes a difference in terms of timing. Best of luck to those still waiting!
  5. You could also look into MA programs in Canada. Because of the difference in our system (you need an MA to do a PhD), they all tend to offer some funding... plus, even as an international student, tuition is way lower.
  6. The one grad student I already know at Brown lives on the east side and cycles to school, and seems to like it. I am staying with him during the perspectives visit next week, so I guess I'll get a feel for whether or not I'd like to live that far out. Can't wait to visit next week!
  7. McGill English is notifying today for the MA. Not sure if anyone else here applied there...
  8. I've been mulling this point over quite a bit in the past few months, as I was told nearly the same thing by a POI (I also consider her a friend). This particular professor, who is now very well-known and respected in her field, turned down offers from the Ivies to do her PhD with one particular professor in much less prestigious university, and then a few years ago turned down job offers from two of the most prestigious universities in the world and took a job at a less distinguished Canadian university, where she felt she would better be able to do her work. Her advice was to go to the place where you feel you can best do your work, do it well, and the rest will come. I tried to point out to her that we aren't all such superstars with (probably) amazing luck-- but also, her words have stuck with me. It's nice to know that in at least some cases, prestige is not important.
  9. This also happens to be right around the time that my thesis is due.... it will surely be epic.
  10. hazelbite! AMAZING!!!! Looks like you did indeed make the right call when it came to choosing a discipline. Congrats!!!
  11. Thanks so much, hazelbite! I too had a hell of a time choosing a discipline. I avoided the commitment by applying mostly to interdisciplinary programs. Got rejected from all of the programs with "literature" in the title and accepted to all the ones with "performance." And so the decision was made for me! I couldn't be happier, though. Clearly, people smarter than me had a much better idea how and where my research fits. It looks like you've applied to a lot of schools who are really strong in performance as well! Hopefully you'll have the opportunity to study a bit of both!
  12. I'm doing this too! Fortunately, Providence is only 6.5 hours (according to Google Maps) from where I live now. Albeit, across a border. A very reasonable road trippin' distance. Also, I've spent much of the past 5 years living abroad and travelling and trying not to amass things. The only furniture I own is a one of those crappy Ikea shelves, and an almost equally crappy mattress. Easy!
  13. Thanks! I guess she doesn't know (or won't say) whether or not they have selected the admits yet. Oh well, I guess I'd get the same answer. Will just have to wait it out! For the snail mail, maybe.
  14. There seem to be a lot of rumours flying around about Columbia, that's for sure! My ex was almost lured into their English PhD program three years ago when he went through this process, but ultimately ended up in a different program-- one much better suited to his interests and personality. He heard after that the vibe in the Columbia English department was pretty cut throat. But, I think he might have heard this while attending a conference at the CUNY Grad Center, so perhaps it should be taken with a grain of salt. Seemed like there could have been a slight rivalry going on there.
  15. I agree with Sparky! My undergrad institution (at one of the Canadian schools you mentioned) has three streams within its English program: literature, cultural studies (which is actually mostly film studies) and theatre. Technically, my degree is in English, but most of my upper level work was in cinema and dance/performance studies. The work of the department's PhD students extremely diverse: there are lots of people working on film and a few working on performance too I think. The department even, amazingly, has hired a postdoc in dance studies for next year. All of this to say that I wouldn't worry at all about your degree being in English! As Sparky pointed out, in many departments, the term is no longer synonymous with 'literature.' I'm sure you'll have no problem applying to jobs in film studies, or else in English departments with film studies tracks.
  16. Congrats to the accepted! Re Harvard: As the days roll by, I am strongly considering the possibility that the chosen 2 or 3 do not post here.
  17. I've been lucky enough to receive a few offers, but one is from my dream school (which was also my first offer!), so there is no real contest. I'm close to my POI at the other PhD program I got into, so she already knows (in fact, already knew when the adcom met) that I won't be attending. I'll inform the other program as soon as they send me the appropriate form! My big post-acceptance stress is that I suddenly have 0 motivation to finish my honours thesis. A few months ago I was excited about it (finally, I get to write on exactly what I want!), but now it just seems like the final hoop I have to jump through before I can move on with my life (I'm finishing my 2nd Bachelor's degree. I am so ready to move on.) Instead of writing it, I find myself reading books and articles by the professors in my future program, and looking up all sorts of information on the department/university/city. I realize that this is probably pretty common, but also, scary. Need to finish it!
  18. I am 99% sure that I will be attending Brown this fall. Can't wait to visit next month!
  19. Are you currently doing the MA? I won't be attending, but I'm still curious about how you're finding it!
  20. Mine came at the end of the day on Friday, so it seems reasonable that there's still more to come!
  21. Haven't yet heard a peep! And I'm not holding my breath... but I have to say that Harvard FVS is the only program that might lead me to reconsider Brown's offer, which I'm pretty sure I will be accepting in any case. There are so many people in that tiny program whose interests align with my own (perhaps) strange ones. Congrats, nyfilmfest! I did my BFA at Concordia, and sat in on a film studies PhD seminar last term (I'm currently attending that other Anglo Montreal school). I was accepted yesterday to the Humanities PhD, but I won't be attending. If you have questions, I might be able to answer them!
  22. Looks like the Tisch Performance Studies MA results are coming out! Got accepted with a small (considering the cost of the program) scholarship.
  23. This seems to be the week for Adcom meetings at Concordia! I know that Humanities met yesterday as well... Good luck!
