  1. @Alynnh, they must have loved your application so much that they wanted to extend admissions to you before others did! Congrats! Side note: Do you go to MSU? I'm from Michigan!
  2. So, I noticed on the results board this morning that someone was already accepted to Georgia State in Anth (master's for F18) before even finishing an application. That seems odd, is that something that can happen? I've never heard of that before
  3. @Archaeodan Ah, that seems logical. Frankly, I would be thrilled to just get into one school with funding. I wonder what the statistics are for people who receive a funded offer their first round vs people who didn't receive any offers. It seems like a real possibility that one may not receive a single offer in the first round...
  4. @jamesaly, well, I sent my CV and poster as requested, and requested that they let me know what they think about my project. And then it was crickets...
  5. Good work, @EvelynD! I'm sorry about your job, but hey, maybe life is trying to free you up for all of those interviews and acceptances you're going to get @jamesaly, I feel your pain. I think I am going to end up applying to one of the schools I recently decided not to apply to (for a weird reason; it's on an island, and I am extremely concerned about a massive earthquake happening while I'm there...) because I heard back from my POI and she genuinely seemed interested in possibly taking on my project. Which is better than I can say for most POI, who didn't respond to follow up emails.. but I'm just chalking it up to them being busy. Has anyone heard of successful applicants who reached out to POIs and heard an initial positive response, only to follow up and hear nothing? I'm trying not to read too much into it, but speculation is all I have at this point and I am trying to tamp that down, lest I start spiraling into a cycle of negativity, haha.
  6. @Archaeodan, Oh no, what happened??
  7. I would mention the euro anth prof, but clarify that it was a non academic chapter. This will show your service outside of the discipline. May I ask what your chapter was about? However, mentioning the other woman you’ve been in contact with will definitely come off as name dropping in an unfavorable manner, unless this was someone you academically trained under.
  8. @cbsag123, I would be loath to say that Michigan is not as prestigious as the other schools; they consistently rank in the top ten for most concentrations... Frankly, prestige for admissions is null if you don't have the grades, writing skills, experience, and letters of recommendation. Stop concerning yourself with "brand name" schools, and focus on what you have to offer a graduate program and what you want to achieve with a graduate degree.
  9. @Archaeodan, nice!! Also, Americorps is going to look excellent to your schools
  10. FYI for anyone applying to UTK, I talked to the anth dept on the phone and the woman let it slip that so far, they only have 75 applications. Now, I'm sure that's going to jump in the next few days, but 75 is much better than 200 or 300, eh?
  11. @Archaeodan Woohoo!!! That's awesome; it's terrifying when you've finished everything and turned it in, only to hope that your professors turn letters in on time too! I think mine are all going it on time, yasss @jamesaly FOR REAL. I'm applying to eight different schools, and it's going to run me near $1000 to apply. And that's $1000 I don't have But thankfully, I got a fee waiver from one of the most expensive schools, you should look into it if you qualify!!! All of my Dec 1st deadlines are in, PHEW. Now, on to the Dec 15th deadlines!
  12. @Archaeodan, oh no! That would keep me on edge every moment At least letters of rec are pretty lenient, they don't necessarily expect them by the deadline we have for applications. Where are you applying?
  13. I have my BS and MA in anthropology. As far as a BS, it depends on what subfield. If you do archaeology, then you can get work doing survey and excavations with environmental companies. You could also find work in museums and historical venues, if you're lucky. The best chances of finding a job with a BA is by doing as many field schools, internships, and maybe even doing undergrad research in an anthropology lab all focused on what he wants to do career-wise. But if you want to have supervisory positions or move up within the field, you almost certainly need a PhD.
  14. Only TWO DAYS until the first big deadline!! Anyone else freaking out? I feel like once everything is submitted, I'm not going to be able to stop thinking about if I'll even get in to a single school Anyone else like this?
  15. So, I'm currently filling out applications and one of the schools is asking for my anthropology gpa from undergrad. Now, are they asking the GPA of my anth classes (which would rock)?? or the gpa of my major (which would suck)?
  16. How can he give you a negative letter of recommendation if you don't include him? Do you need a letter from him for some reason? It sounds like you have plenty of options for recommendations, just cut this person out, and move on.
  17. birthday bash
  18. @jamesaly Hey, quality over quantity for sure.
  19. I would retake it and really focus on quant.
  20. @Archaeodan awesome, hope you have a better go of it this round! It's my first round for PhD, but I'm not holding my breath. I emailed POIs, they responded, I sent more stuff to them, and radio silence (With the exception of one).....
  21. @cbsag123, what school did you go to?
  22. Thank you!
  23. If I refer to results from my thesis in my SOP, do I cite my thesis?
  24. If you're going to send emails out, I would do it ASAP. We're nearing the end of the semester, so professors are going to be gearing up for finals, conferences (in some cases), and the holidays. Just don't be discouraged if it takes a while to hear back or you don't hear anything; they may be too busy and forget.
