  1. @izmir Ohhh okay. Yeah, University of Texas should be fine. No need to add the "Austin"
  2. You want to write the whole name of the university, no abbreviations.
  3. Just wanted to say hi and check in. Still struggling to finish a good draft for my SOP... Anyone want to take a critical eye to it once it's done? How is everyone doing? Only 19 days until the Dec. 1st deadline!!
  4. Did you by chance go to PFB? I would try to do a field school in the region you're interested in, if financially possible. You can't help the coursework that your department had, so I would focus on how that coursework prepared you to do further work in bioarch. Be specific on what you want to study in Andes/Peru, and how you are going to execute that research. It may be easier to get into a Maya focused program, but is that what you really want to do for the rest of your life? The PhD level requires that kind of commitment. You may be able to change what within the Maya you would like to study, but if you completely change what you want to do once in a program, then that program may not be able to offer the kind of training you would want. Don't worry so much about having a Maya focused background and focus more on how those experiences will help your dissertation level work. Field schools all share some basic techniques, and so they will be happy to see that you at least have some field training. It sounds like you don't have a specific focus, so you may want to also look at M.A. programs, which still have funding. My M.A. offered complete tuition remission and assistantships.
  5. @lylark, I don't mind looking it over! I'm working on mine right now, but once it's finished (hopefully this week), I could use some critical eyes.
  6. What I did is introduce myself and where I am at (e.g. I just graduated with my M.A. from *insert school*). Then I talked about the research I am interested in doing. Make sure to be detailed, but brief. Last, I talked about why I am e-mailing them (your interests in x, y, and z seem to align with the research I am interested in pursuing) and then asked questions (e.g. what type of research and students are you seeking to add to your program).
  7. Thanks for all the insight! There’s one school that hasn’t responded, but it’s also in Canada, so they may have a difference policy. I’m still going to apply because my research is literally a perfect match with the POI there.
  8. @Bschaefer that is all wonderfully useful, I will definitely keep that in mind when prepping! Also, thank you for letting me know about multiple professors, I hadn’t even thought about that. And bingo!
  9. @Bschaefer Oh man, that's great to know! I'll definitely treat it like an interview, but didn't even think that there might be more than one person. What sort of stuff did POIs ask you? I'm not sure what to expect. On an unrelated sidenote, I think you know a girl I went to school with, you and her were in the same grad program! (not to be creepy or anything, haha)
  10. @museum_geek, that is good to know! I wasn't sure what the policies were. I actually received some more responses today, so that's encouraging! Also, one of the professors wants to skype with me to talk more about my project, so I figure that has to be a good sign right?! I'm about to pass out over here, haha. I get really nervous talking with people I've never met. Especially in this kind of situation.
  11. @suavesana, that's what I was leaning towards. I feel like if they don't respond, they're clearly not that interested and end similarly with an application. I don't really have much money to apply, so I don't want to waste it applying to a school whose faculty I haven't even talked to.
  12. Question for you guys. Would you apply to a school where you reached out to a POI but never heard back?
  13. Thank you! I feel like 4 business days is reasonable. I've heard back from my top three choices, so yay! But I've only heard back from half of the people. Maybe I'll get some more today.....
  14. I've sent out e-mails to potential supervisors this week. I've heard back from a few already, but not most. How long did it take for POIs to respond to your initial e-mail?
  15. I have an article that I've been writing for a while now. Would it be worth it to submit it to journals before I apply so I can say that I have an article in submission in my CV?
  16. Thank you for the suggestions, I will definitely look into Stony Brook and Penn State. I'm actually applying for the PhD in functional anatomy and evolution through the med school at Johns Hopkins, since my research interests straddle anthropology and gross anatomy!
  17. I think you have plenty of time! Applications in both Canada and US are generally not due until December, at the earliest. I'm going to be reaching out to potential supervisors within the next week, and will start working on applications once I have heard back from them. I can't really speak to the funding issue, but if it's like the US, you just apply and then when you apply to schools, you state that you've applied to such and such funding (I think).
  18. If I were you, I would apply to both PhD and Master's programs. My M.A. was fully funded with a stipend, and that's why I went! Not having a thesis in undergrad won't hurt you when applying for programs, but doing a master's program might help develop your research focus more so you have a clear SOP when you apply.
  19. This is my first time applying for PhD programs, and I'm ridiculously nervous. It's a pretty expensive process, so fingers crossed! Undergrad: University of Michigan - Ann Arbor Major: Evolutionary Anthropology GPA: 2.8 (I was pre-med until my junior year, terrible mistake.......Aced most of my anthropology classes!) Graduate: Texas Tech University (M.A.) Major: Physical Anthropology GPA: 3.9 GRE: 161 Verbal, 160 Quant, Still waiting on AW Research Interests: Human Skeletal Biology, Osteology, Cesarean Section, Forensics, Maternal Health, Pelvic Anatomy, Feminist Theory Desired Schools: Michigan State, Berkeley, Johns Hopkins, Kent State, University of Victoria, NYU, UT - Knoxville, Arizona State, WashU - St. Louis, USF, and Yale.
  20. Hi everyone, I was looking through the anthropology forum and noticed that nobody had really started a thread where people who are applying for 2018 cycle can get together to discuss schools, questions, and whatnot! We could start by listing our background, research interests, desired programs, and type (PhD or MA/MS) I'll start off and comment below. Cheers to the 2018 cycle, and may the odds be ever in your favor!
  21. Okay, thank you! I'm only worried about the GRE because my UGrad GPA was pretty awful, but I graduated with a 3.9 in my MA. I just don't want the ghosts of undergrad past to haunt my PhD applications, considering that I have done so much since then!
  22. Awesome, thank you! It's been awhile since I've been on Grad Cafe, so I'll have to prowl around in the forums.
  23. I am getting ready to write personal statements and academic statements, and am drawing a complete blank. I tried to look for examples online, but can’t find any for anthropology! Do any of you know where I could find examples, or mind showing me yours? Thank you in advance, I really appreciate it!
  24. Hi there! Nervous physical anthropology phd applicant for the 2018 cycle here. A little bit of background from me: - BA from U Mich in Evolutionary Anthropology 2012 - MA from Texas Tech in Physical Anthropology 2015 I tried to see what I could get in the private sector, and worked as an Archaeological Tech, and then as a Medicolegal Death Invesigator/Autopsy Tech for a year and a half. However, I was diagnosed with a pituitary adenoma last month, and had to leave my job. Throughout all of this, I knew deep down that I wanted to continue my masters thesis research at the phd level. It’s an interesting topic that has little specific literature. Health wise, I’m crappy, but had to take the gre today so I can apply this season before my surgery. For having severe active hyperthyroidism and the tumor, I thought I did pretty well. However, after poking around here, I am not so sure anymore. long story short, I would love to know gre scores for those of you who were successful phd applicants, and where you were accepted! I know it’s largely due to fit, but gre scores have some role, correct? For the record, I received a 161 in VR and 160 in Quant. Thanks a bunch in advance!
