  1. I included an under review article.
  2. Me: I'm applying to quantitative psychology programs. Her: So you're interested in Frued and psychoanalyses? Me: [cringe] Oh no, quant psych is more like applied statistics. Her: ... Me: Frued is more qualitative psych and psychiatry. I like using math.
  3. Unless you take a biostats course or a course in survival analysis, you probably won't be exposed to a cox regression. I suspect that most grad psych stats classes will stick with parametric stats. At least that has been my experience anyway.
  4. I had a similar situation. I knew that I was going to be a very very strong candidate at my top choice school. I applied to other programs, because I knew it wasn't a sure thing. I would suggest applying to those additional schools, just in case funding doesn't work out or the program offers to match any offer, like mine has.
  5. What do you want to do with your terminal degree?
  6. I do not know. I only know that one of my friends received one already. It could be the case that he got one of the early ones.
  7. B/c the rating scale doesn't handle percentiles well. A score of a 3 means that you should be able to handle grad school writing with some help. In my field (quant psych), no one cares about the percentile of the writing section. In fact, as long as your SOP was polished and your writing sample was nice, they didn't care at all.
  8. 3 transfers may raise red flags. I had to talk about my 1 transfer to my pi. I had a good reason: mediocre departments / boredom -> kickass department / workaholic peers. When you apply to grad school, you'll have to send transcripts from every school you've ever attended.
  9. I'd be willing to look yours over/show you mine if you'd like.
  10. How are you mentioning people in your cv? As for your other questions: I included all my work experience under " Professional Employment" where I included retail experience and a government internship. I didn't include any high school experiences, just everything I did while in college. I'm confused by your concern about vita length. A cv is very different than a resume. There isn't a length maximum. However, I would only list people as references IF they have agreed to be references/ write rec letters.
  11. Are you in a PhD program or a masters?
  12. How about we merge them into a list, where everyone bolds whatever is new? Interview Weekends Notre Dame (CBB/Dev): February 7-9, 2013 UCLA (Social): January 10-12 Vanderbilt (Quant): Feb 14-15 Phone/Skype Notre Dame (CBB): December 7, 2012 Washington University in St. Louis (Social): December 12, 2012 Notre Dame (Dev): December 22, 2012 UNC, Chapel Hill (Social): November 1, 2012 (Unofficial chat) UT, Austin (Social): January 10, 2013
  13. I'll start: UCLA (Social): January 10-12 Vanderbilt (Quant): Feb 14-15
  14. That GPA might be stellar or really sad depending on the school and department it came from.
  15. I would as well.
  16. We should make a pro-tip post somewhere.
  17. I tend to refer to bio, chem, geology as the natural sciences; physics, econ, statistics as the math sciences; and psych, anthro, and sociology as the social sciences. However, at the undergraduate level, I've found that some of the social sciences are taught like humanities classes. So I can see how psychology courses could be considered less sciencey than pre-med courses. (That's not meant to be a dig at psych or anyone's background. Just an observation from my years as an econ major. Psych has been a recent addition.)
  18. The cognitive area is not the same thing as an admissions committee. An admission committee consists of profs within an area, while all the profs that do research in cognition are in the cognitive area. All admits by committee or individual have to be approved by the graduate school. My sense is that students who've been rejected hear back from the school after interview invites or admits go out. You've got a while to wait.
  19. The citation isn't about ease of finding the book. It's about demonstrating that you know how to cite research. Also, I'm confused about why you included the title on your cv. Did you contribute to the book?
  20. In my quant methods class, we're overloaded with grad students who haven't shifted their focus from grades to research. 1/2 earned some flavor of A, 1/3 earned some flavor of B, and 1/6 earned Cs. In the 2nd year methods course, the grading distribution was 1/6 A, 1/6 A-, and so on. But given that this in the humanities forum, I guess there seems to be less focus on research and more focus on coursework.
  21. Found this in polisci.
  22. My mentor showed me his letter. The format was suspiciously similar.
  23. I wish more schools were like that. I know that my ugrad program doesn't look at apps til after the holiday.
