Interview Thread - Social and Quant
Quant_Liz_Lemon replied to Quant_Liz_Lemon's topic in Psychology Forum
Post your POI questions here: -
Then, I'll just have to wait with you. This upcoming week should be when we hear back from Davis.

Which field? (Are you referring to the most recent post?)
-
I would assume the opposite. The assistant prof that I work with aims to churn out a lot of research in order to get tenure. He encourages me work on my research constantly. I get a lot more attention from him than my other mentors who are both full profs and much less motivated to churn out pubs.

Which minor to accompany my major?
Quant_Liz_Lemon replied to mind.is.everything's topic in Psychology Forum
Research psych is incredibly vague. What do you want to research? If you already have a major in psychology, I don't understand why you would minor in it as well. Would it add to your understanding of the field? Without knowing anything about what you want to research, I would suggest the minor in CS. My programming classes were essential for running R and you will most likely need some programming knowledge regardless of your interest. -
Translating and Publishing a Novel: Value?
Quant_Liz_Lemon replied to Zeugma's topic in Writing, Presenting and Publishing
I'm not in literature, so take my advice with that in mind. I would NOT give it ANY weight. Translating a book is not the same thing as independent research. They aren't your ideas; they're someone else's. I might give you a little credit if you were to annotate it as well. I would suggest asking your advisor, who will have a much better sense of what hiring committees and/or tenure committees are looking for. -
School: Arizona State University Area: Quantitative Psychology Rationalization: Even though I was "one of the most impressive [applicants] in terms of combining personality and quantitative that [my poi] have seen in several years," My POI was "the only person in the quantitative program who could supervise a combined personality-quantitative student by [him]self." He said, that "[g]iven [his] age, [he] cannot guarantee that [he] will be around for 6 more years to mentor [me] through the PhD." At least his email rejecting me was really nice. Word: Blerg

Interview Questions you may encounter (Feel free to add some)
Quant_Liz_Lemon replied to DarwinAG's topic in Psychology Forum
I brought a portfolio, but that was more to hold copies of my cv. Turns out that I didn't need them. Actually, now that I think of it, I did have a list of questions in there. -
Well, at least that social project can easily be connected to I/O. However, you're going to have to explain why you're earning a masters in counseling.
-
Also, Undergrad Math: Plenty of it (grades differ, trend is growing vividly across the time) No one knows what "growing vividly" means. You also need to specify what type of math classes you've taken.

Why type of labs did you volunteer in?

Does a phone or email from a POI mean you're a shoe in?
Quant_Liz_Lemon replied to mightymouse's topic in Psychology Forum
It depends on numerous factors. Some POIs may contact all the students that will be interviewing for the lab, while some POIs may not contact any of the students ahead of time. It could also be that those students, who were contacted early, had already been in communication with said POI, but did not contact those who hadn't already been in communication. -

I reread my letter. Oops. I was a day off. Need some opinions! Replace LOR from only professor?
Quant_Liz_Lemon replied to deekay25's topic in Letters of Recommendation
You should have a prof write a letter as they are more qualified to comment on your ability to do graduate level work. An alumn won't be able to influence the admission committee. -
Anyone recieved acceptance letters
Quant_Liz_Lemon replied to gradorbust's topic in Psychology Forum
Mine was unofficial. My POI isn't allowed to hand me anything official until interview weekend. -
Need some opinions! Replace LOR from only professor?
Quant_Liz_Lemon replied to deekay25's topic in Letters of Recommendation
Don't replace your prof recommendation! -
Vanderbilt's program is newer and has fewer graduates, but all the professors there are top notch. Kris Preacher just got inducted into SMEP. They also have more funding for grad students than OSU. OSU is more established and larger, but they're blended in with behavior and decision making. I don't know about the prof quality. I would look into who's in SMEP.
-
I applied to USC and Vandy in quantitative where a few quant profs focus on BG. I've heard from Vandy, not from USC.
-
1) I don't know if this is true but there are a few quant psych programs jointly housed in education and psych. Vanderbilt comes to mind. 2) You might want to look at behavior and decision making programs: OSU and CMU have them. 3) Research experience can compensate. It depends on what the coursework is that's dragging you down. 4) Make sure you take Linear algebra. (I didn't. It wouldn't fit into my schedule. I suspect that this was one of my weaknesses).

Is having only one POI per school common?
Quant_Liz_Lemon replied to rufio's topic in Psychology Forum
I used citations without the full reference. I cited the longitudinal study I've been working with and papers the pois had written.
