I think it’s a combination of how all the obsessed nuts like us (who would likely be be stronger candidates on average) tend to be here, and what I think is them interviewing about 15-20 for what would be 6-8 seats at most. Anyway, here’s hoping!

Also, shaarawi, since everyone on here has had their interview (at least from my calculations), would you mind sharing what you were referring to as curve balls? It’s fine if you’d rather not, but I think it’s worth a shot to ask!

Sure! The POI that I mentioned in my SOP has retired and the only other Arabic literature specialists in the department work with poetry rather than novels. My SOP was focused on novels so they asked me how I would manage that if I have an advisor whose strength is in poetry. They started the interview with that and it almost threw me off because I was expecting to jump straight into talking about my research rather than talking about how I would overcome a hurdle. They also asked why I chose to apply to the comp lit program and not the near east languages and civilizations program.

Wow! Those are hard questions, actually. I hope they went well! I got simpler ones: they asked how my writing sample fit into my doctoral project, for example, and how I would teach a course on World Literature if given the opportunity. Also, I work on South Asia but my personal statement was very much foregrounding a comparatist approach, so I think that's why I didn't get that Area Studies vs. Comp' Lit' question we often get. In any case, good luck, and here's hoping for the best!

This is really interesting because I had some overlap but also a few questions that were entirely different--it started with "Why UPenn?", for example. I wasn't my most articulate but I think it went well. Good luck to y'all too!

I mean the questions seem to be clearly focused on if there was a place for the interviewed.  What questions did y'all ask/what were their respective answers?

Hi everyone--I haven't been on the forum that actively both because it's been crazy at work this week and for sanity's sake. Congratulations to everyone on their acceptances and interviews!

I did get clarity on NYU, though, today. It seems like they have already sent out all interview requests for finalists, who will go through that process at their open house on March 7th. Final admission offers will be made after that point, but, for those of us who haven't gotten interview requests, most likely we're out.

And @gopxgo : I had my interview last week but haven't heard back. I'm kind of bracing for them putting me on the waitlist, but based on the results survey they haven't sent out any acceptances yet. The timeline they had given was that they would be letting folks know of acceptances by the end of this week.

Thanks for the information. I had the interview last week as well and have been waiting this whole week. It's gonna be Friday, so I suppose the result is gonna come out in one way or another.

Has anyone applied to Princeton or UCLA? Comp lit is a smaller group and I was wondering whether I can expect to know when they start notifying.

I applied to Princeton and haven't heard anything yet. Their site says that they'll notify by mid February so it should be any day now

I received the rejection last year on the 21st, if that helps! (Although I think I entered the result) It was for comp lit, too. I had a good communication with a POI and my soul was crushed!

Has anyone here applied to Duke Literature? I see that a few people have posted rejections, but I still haven't been notified of a rejection or an interview. I wonder if they are sending out rejections/acceptances in bursts.

Did anyone was waitlisted at Northwestern (for Comp Lit)?

Hi!  No words from Northwestern yet.  I emailed the program coordinator and was told the following:

"We hope to have our final admissions decisions made soon. Please be sure to check CollegeNet. We appreciate your patience and understanding."

Dying to hear from them too--I so hope to get to stay in Chicago...

I received an offer from Northwestern two weeks ago. Not sure if they have done notifying yet... Hope you'll hear the good news soon!

Heartfelt congratulations!  It's such a great program, and the campus is gorgeous.

May I ask whether you received the campus visit invitation, and, if so, when the visit will be?

I got an offer at Northwestern too, and the campus visit is March 8th-11th. No clue if they're still giving out offers or finalizing a waitlist, though.

Thank you for the information!  Congratulations to you as well, and I hope you'll enjoy the campus visit.

My POI was not even on the committee this year, so I don't pin much hope on the acceptance.  Fingers crossed that I'll at least be on the waitlist (if they have one)...

Anyone else waiting on Cornell or Princeton for Comp Lit? I think they both informed around this time last year.

Any insight appreciated! Even if it's a rejection I just want to know dammit!

Waiting on Princeton, expecting it at the end of the week based on past years. Cornell seems to have started notifying a long time ago so I have it down as an unofficial rejection.

Waiting on Penn, post interview, as are numerous others on this thread (I count four at least?). Excited and anxious to see what this week holds!
