m97 Posted March 11, 2020 Posted March 11, 2020 Also accepted into Harvard's MTS Program (Comparative Religions)! Couldn't be more excited!!!! After being offered a full tuition scholarship and a 10k a year stipend from Wake Forest I'm very hopeful for some good financial aid from Harvard. NTNerd and pax et caritas 2
pax et caritas Posted March 11, 2020 Posted March 11, 2020 Update: I received my financial aid for HDS. 100% tuition! Bit surprised, but grateful. NTNerd 1
NTNerd Posted March 11, 2020 Posted March 11, 2020 Congrats to all those who were accepted to Harvard today! pax et caritas 1
ndmtsapplicant2020 Posted March 11, 2020 Posted March 11, 2020 Harvard only offered me 75% tuition. Good thing I accepted that full ride from ND because I'm not coughing up 30 grand for this. NTNerd 1
JF2F Posted March 11, 2020 Posted March 11, 2020 Rejoice, too, Harvard Mdiv waitlisters! I will be turning down Harvard for Notre Dame too. Congrats to everyone receiving good news today, and to those with less positive news, hang in there! NTNerd 1
m97 Posted March 11, 2020 Posted March 11, 2020 To anyone who has negotiated scholarships/funding before, I’d love to hear about how you went about doing so, when you think the best time to do so is, and any other insight you may have! conraddy 1

How guaranteed is it really for one who does all the "right" things in a MA program (good grades, published articles, good recs, etc.) to ultimately be admitted to a top PhD program? It seems like there are quite a few people rejected from PhDs coming from MA programs with very strong CVs. It also seems, however, that most PhD admits have an MA in Religious Studies. Obviously there is no such guarantee, but I am curious to what extent the MA really supports a PhD applicant. Even with generous funding, I'm trying to gauge the pros/cons of investing even slightly in an MA program if the PhD application process is going to be the same lottery as always. Feel free to DM me as well. There is definitely no guarantee. In fact, the lottery odds get much worse -- from forty percent acceptance rate to five. On the other hand, another way to look at it is that the masters is fast becoming a virtual requirement to getting into the PhD. Therefore, it is a (almost) necessary but not sufficient condition of admission to the PhD. Edited March 12, 2020 by Averroes MD

pax et caritas Posted March 12, 2020 Posted March 12, 2020 Rejected from U Chicago. I hope the rest of you had better luck!
ucrazay Posted March 12, 2020 Posted March 12, 2020 (edited) Hi all - just heard back from UChicago. I got into the Islamic studies program! Chi-City here we come! Also got rejected from the Harvard MTS where my wife is currently, so that was pretty sad. Good luck to everyone! Edited March 12, 2020 by ucrazay pax et caritas and NTNerd 1 1

ucrazay Posted March 12, 2020 Posted March 12, 2020 For some reason I didn't get an email from them just checked and there was status update
PonderingPerson400 Posted March 12, 2020 Posted March 12, 2020 There was no email, I just check the portal and saw a status update
JF2F Posted March 12, 2020 Posted March 12, 2020 Nothing in my portal either. They must have forgotten about me - it's God telling me he doesn't my fun to die.
sktlab Posted March 12, 2020 Posted March 12, 2020 Anyone hear back from the PTS masters program yet?
Fiat Posted March 12, 2020 Posted March 12, 2020 I got into UChicago MA as well! Would you all mind sharing how much scholarship/aid you got from them? I am trying to figure out where I stand in the program...
JDD Posted March 13, 2020 Posted March 13, 2020 @sktlab PTS is in a bit of a lockdown as everything is switching to an online format for the rest of the semester. I’ve also heard that non essential staff have been asked to work from home - all of which could delay admissions decisions. sktlab 1
sktlab Posted March 13, 2020 Posted March 13, 2020 @JDD oh goodness, I didn't know they had switched for the rest of the semester. hope everyone here and there are staying healthy!

I'm biased to Georgetown but I don't know based on your stated interests. Thank you for your congratulations! I think I am leaning towards UPenn more at this point due to the presence of Jamal Elias, who has done a lot of truly inspiring work on Islamic visual culture. Georgetown seems to lean more towards Islamic law and Arabic Linguistics, but I could be mistaken. Plus, UPenn's manuscript collection and focus upon material studies in general seems like something rarely put to the forefront by schools, and I really would love the opportunity to gain strength in that field. Let me know if this seems like an accurate appraisal of Georgetown though, it's so close to home for me that it'd be a very convenient place to attend. Averroes MD 1
