2021 Computational Biology/Bioinformatics/Systems Biology PhD Admissions

Hello everyone!

I hope you all are well as you can be, considering everything 2020 has collectively thrown at us. I saw posts about computational biology/bioinformatics/systems biology programs for previous years but there is nothing posted for the 2021 cycle. I thought I'd be nice to get things started for this cycle - it was great read through previous posts for those interested in more computationally-inclined programs.

It'd be nice to hear about everyone's thoughts on where they are applying to and to hear about news/updates/tips anyone has as well as we progress with applications. All the best and stay safe.

The nature of GradCafe, things get mixed.  Examples of this include those interested in marine biology posting to Earth Sciences and those interested in bioinformatics or computational biology posting to Computer Science or even Medical.  Those interested in ecology may be at a lost.

As most will likely know, bioinformatics programs may be housed in a variety of schools/departments, and sometimes even within the same university (school of medicine, CS department, biology department, cell/molecular, etc.).  Bioinformatics cast a wide umbrella over 10 or subject areas and with most things turning to 'informatics and 'omics these days, likely more.  As someone with an MS in bioinformatics I strongly encourage you to know what type of bioinformatics you want to study before you apply anywhere.

My background is marine biology with a solid mix of Interdisciplinary studies thrown in (chemistry and biology).  I have an MS in bioinformatics.  My interest, as you may guess, is to combine the two for a Ph.D.

Where I am applying/applied:

University of Maine.

University of Maryland, MEES.

University of Rhode Island.

University of New Hampshire.

Brown.

Maybe University of Delaware.

Thanks for starting this thread @tzenstI applied to:

  • MIT CSB
  • MIT BE
  • Harvard BIG
  • Harvard SSQB
  • WashU Biology
  • Columbia Systems Biology
  • Yale CBB
  • Cambridge Physics

Thinking about MIT EECS but finding it very hard to get motivated in what I suspect is an even more competitive applicant pool.

Fingers crossed, we get to meet during the virtual interviews cycle!

I applied to Cambridge in October and received an acceptance so I decided to only apply to reach schools afterwards. @Sky_china don't feel bad about your selection of schools. It looks like a wonderful distribution, and I think the most important thing is just to apply. After that it's all up in the air for everyone, not only program acceptance but also research itself. There are going to be leading labs in every institution :)

First Congratulations !  Juat wondering are you contacted by the department or the professor ?  UPenn is my top choice, very nervous and a little sad

Thank you so much! It was the GCB program coordinator, Maureen Kirsch, who contacted me. I'm not sure about their timeline for sending all of the invitations this year - fingers crossed for you!!
