When I write "POI" I mean "Person of Interest" - not sure about other forumers I guess sometimes once you get into a program your Person of Interest may transform into Person Oppressing Imagination VBD, psyentist4good, Nanolol and 4 others 7
Strangefox Posted January 25, 2011 Posted January 25, 2011 I just always say "PI," as in "principal investigator." Principal investigator - like in a lab?
MoJingly Posted January 25, 2011 Author Posted January 25, 2011 Principal investigator - like in a lab? Yup! So it seems "person of interest" is a safe bet. I was paranoid that, you know, EVERYONE knew except for me sanaya, nablaa and Takky 3
Bukharan Posted January 25, 2011 Posted January 25, 2011 Yup! So it seems "person of interest" is a safe bet. I was paranoid that, you know, EVERYONE knew except for me OMG, I love you for asking this. I thought I was the only one who was wondering this. ouibeque, Takky, Nanolol and 4 others 7
Matba Posted January 25, 2011 Posted January 25, 2011 OMG, I love you for asking this. I thought I was the only one who was wondering this. You were not alone, I also had no idea! I thought it was just a variation of Principal Investigator and ignored it. nablaa and sanaya 2
MoJingly Posted January 25, 2011 Author Posted January 25, 2011 YES!!! Who the heck started it? nablaa 1
wanderlust07 Posted January 25, 2011 Posted January 25, 2011 Mojingly, your suggestions for this are made of WIN. *bakes cookies* I think my favorite is "Pathological Optimism Incinerator." DBear and Nanolol 2
onomatopoeia. Posted January 25, 2011 Posted January 25, 2011 You were not alone, I also had no idea! I thought it was just a variation of Principal Investigator and ignored it. I've always regarded it as Mojingly's guess..Professor of Interest. For a while i thought it was program of interest also.. Arcadian 1
Langoustine Posted January 25, 2011 Posted January 25, 2011 Person of Interest. When I first came here I was so confused by the POI, SOP, what have you. There should be a key.
TheOtherJake Posted January 25, 2011 Posted January 25, 2011 There should be a key. Yeah! Like a GradCafe Wiki, with a featured article article everyday, and occasional pranksters who claim your favorite professor died. Le Chat, waddle, repatriate and 1 other 4
Golden Monkey Posted January 25, 2011 Posted January 25, 2011 Oh, and I kept thinking "poi," that Hawaiian side dish: Xanthan 1
MoJingly Posted January 25, 2011 Author Posted January 25, 2011 Yup. I keep thinking of the performance art poi. Langoustine and Aaron McDevitt 2
MoJingly Posted January 25, 2011 Author Posted January 25, 2011 Well, according to Wikipedia: "Person of interest" is a phrase used by law enforcement when announcing the name of someone involved in a criminal investigation who has not been arrested or formally accused of a crime. The phrase was adopted by the media and widely disseminated, thus most law enforcement agencies have picked up the term. It has no legal meaning, but it is a "catchy" term. It is often used as a euphemism for suspect, and can sometimes result in a trial by media So pretty much, it's perfect. CSC 1
UnlikelyGrad Posted January 25, 2011 Posted January 25, 2011 Professor of Interest (<---- that's actually a legitimate guess) I think that's what it means. But I love all of your other suggestions!
Langoustine Posted January 25, 2011 Posted January 25, 2011 Oh and SLAC. Small liberal arts college. Took me FOREVER to figure that out! O1O11OOO1O1 1
natsteel Posted January 25, 2011 Posted January 25, 2011 I think that's what it means. But I love all of your other suggestions! When I first joined, that's what I thought. So I Google'd "POI Professor of Interest" and found a few results sort-of confirming it. I have just assumed that's what it was. I think seeing PA used for prospective advisor is what made me a bit unsure. I guess it doesn't really matter if it's "person" or "professor" of interest...
MoJingly Posted January 26, 2011 Author Posted January 26, 2011 I think seeing PA used for prospective advisor is what made me a bit unsure. Yes. I saw PA for the first time yesterday right after I made this thread, and I just wanted to laugh. Researchers and acronyms!!
Zouzax Posted January 26, 2011 Posted January 26, 2011 so glad u started this thread. I had NO idea what it meant, but figured it had something to do with an interested party at the school the person applied to. Please, when I first got on here I had NO idea what LOR meant, let alone LTR -- im way behind with internet lingo. Takky 1
was1984 Posted January 27, 2011 Posted January 27, 2011 I always assumed it was a corruption of PI, since it usually refers to the person that would have been said student's PI. The first time I saw it I assumed the person made a typo, but then I kept seeing it, and didn't know what it was supposed to mean! Thanks for asking!
MoJingly Posted January 27, 2011 Author Posted January 27, 2011 Please, when I first got on here I had NO idea what LOR meant, let alone LTR -- im way behind with internet lingo. What's "LTR" ?!?!? It never ends. Ignatius_J_Reilly 1

newms Posted January 27, 2011 Posted January 27, 2011 What's "LTR" ?!?!? It never ends. I would guess 'Long Term Relationship' but I'm not sure if that's what it is for this context - maybe 'Lead Technical Representative'?
