So what is everyone else doing between now and hearing back?

I'll be in my final semester of my master's but I've taken extra coursework so I only have one class left to finish all my requirements. I'm still going to take a full load but it's nice to have a bit of pressure off. I'm also going to busy myself writing a couple apps for summer study which will help take up time in case I don't get in any place. I'm also brushing up on the languages which are on my CV but I haven't used recently... I have all the paradigms memorized in my head somewhere but my Greek is pretty rusty.

This year all departments at Yale are being required by the graduate school to interview students before offering them admission.

Some subfields of the program were already doing this. Although I don't know, I think these will almost certainly be telephone interviews in most cases.

Anyone know when Duke does its interviewing? BTW, I just got an acceptance from UNC-CH.

meant4praise, congrats on your acceptance! How nice to know something so early! Do you care to mention your area of concentration within religious studies?

Acceptances: I saw that LLP was accepted at UNC-CH, but did you see others?

Mea Culpa! I intended to write meant4praise was accepted at UNC-CH, not Lux Lex Pax. Forgive my snafus.

It is so nerve-wracking. The subjectivity of the whole thing is what does it for me. This link almost gives the impression that there is an objectivity that seems to be lacking from the process, best I can tell (at least from applications for a Ph.D. spot in a religious studies program).

Yeah, it's a crap shoot. Unfortunately, the objectivity of the law school application process is only made possible by over emphasizing quantifiable metrics like the GRE and GPA. I can see why such a mechanical process of admission isn't amendable to the kind of critical and creative thinking encouraged by Phd. programs. I just want to know my odds! Haha.

I had a Skype interview with Yale today. I'm not sure how it went; it was pretty short, and I think I displayed neither brilliance nor stupidity. The final decision is supposed be made in late February.

Congratulations! What other schools are you applying to?

I am going to Nashville, TN, next week for an on-campus interview at Vanderbilt University. Does anyone have any advice on how to do well in grad-school admission interview?

Thank you!

Congrats on the interview at Vandy. That's very exciting. I've been told by my advisor here that the interview is really just a weirdo test. Do you know if Vanderbilt invites more people than they accept or are you the only one? If you're the only one, this is more of a wine and dine session. If there are others, that's cool too. It's probably wise to have read an article or book by the people there in your field so that you can discuss their work. It's also probably wise to have some general questions to ask. And just don't be a weirdo. Good luck!

RE: Vandy Interviews. While most who attend interviews at Vandy get offers, all do not. I know of at least one applicant last year who interviewed and did not receive an offer of admission.

I haven't really posted over hear as I am more of an art historian than a religious studies guy. But, my area of interest is in modern/contemporary art and religion. I just got accepted to Graduate Theological Union's Art & Religion program. No one on the art history board will know much about GTU so I thought I would ask over here. What are people's impression of GTU and its reputation?

Posted

Instead of giving you my honest opinion, I think the best way of ascertaining GTU's reputation is to see what the job placement rate of their graduates is and where they place them (research universities, liberal arts colleges, seminaries, post-docs, etc.). Anything else is too subjective and manipulable. Look at the cold, hard data.

Any idea how to find the hard data? I've asked them about their placement and they have told me where there students are typically placed. But, that isn't quite cold, hard data.
