EdYouKateOr Posted January 17, 2013 Posted January 17, 2013 I wanted to create a thread that could serve as a source of inspiration for us all while we wait! Please share your favorite inspirational quotes! Think highly of yourself because the world takes you at your own estimate - Unknown
ShortLong Posted January 17, 2013 Posted January 17, 2013 "Shoot for the moon. Even if you miss, you will land among the stars." I find that one especially appropriate because I am focusing on satellite design. This was a good idea apotheosis 1
Datatape Posted January 17, 2013 Posted January 17, 2013 "You know, I cried when I had no shoes until I met a man who had no feet. And then I laughed really hard." - Jerri Blank, Strangers With Candy All right, all right, for reals. "The best way out is always through." - Robert Frost "Man cannot discover new oceans until he has the courage to lose sight of the shore." - Andre Gide "I see my path, but I don't know where it leads. Not knowing where I'm going is what inspires me to travel it." - Rosalia de Castro
Allouette Posted January 17, 2013 Posted January 17, 2013 "En verité, le chemin importe peu; la volonté d'arriver suffit a tout" - Albert Camus (Truthfully, the path you take doesn't matter; the desire to get there is what counts) A reminder that regardless of what happens this application season, we'll get there in the end. I know it (P.S., If anyone knows a better way to phrase this in English, let me know? My translation does NOT do it justice)
EdYouKateOr Posted January 17, 2013 Author Posted January 17, 2013 "Shoot for the moon. Even if you miss, you will land among the stars." This was a good idea Also one of my favorites and thank YOU for contributing! I know I'll be checking this thread often!

callista Posted January 17, 2013 Posted January 17, 2013 For the Camus quote (sorry, I haven't figured out how to do that on the mobile site) how about, In truth, the road matters little; the desire to arrive is enough. Allouette 1
t1racyjacks Posted January 17, 2013 Posted January 17, 2013 'Try. Fail. Try again. Fail better' -- Samuel Beckett. Um, it's inspirational to me. With the right dose of irony. teethwax and Allouette 2
musichistorygeek Posted January 17, 2013 Posted January 17, 2013 I came across this one while working on a seminar paper on sexology, of all things: "In philosophy, it is not the attainment of the goal that matters, it is the things that are met with by the way." (Havelock Ellis) I quite like it. Unfortunately, my colleagues over in philosophy and gender studies assure me that, contrary to what Dr. Ellis may have thought in the '20s, sometimes the attainment of the goal really does matter.
callista Posted January 18, 2013 Posted January 18, 2013 I like this one a lot. "No problem of human destiny is beyond human beings. Man's reason and spirit have often solved the seemingly unsolvable - and we believe they can do it again." John F. Kennedy ShortLong 1
Vincenzo Posted January 19, 2013 Posted January 19, 2013 And then something happened. I let go. Lost in oblivion, dark and silent and complete, I found freedom. Losing all hope was freedom. -Chuck Palahniuk, Fight Club t1racyjacks and callista 2
Faraday Posted January 19, 2013 Posted January 19, 2013 “The greatest danger to most of us lies not in setting our aim too high and falling short, but in setting our aim too low, and achieving our mark.” – Michelangelo Vincenzo and callista 2

OhMySocks Posted January 19, 2013 Posted January 19, 2013 If you think you're beaten you are, If you think you dare not you don't If you'd like to win, but think you can't its almost a cinch you won't If you think you're losing you are, For out in the world we find success begins with a person's will Its all in the state of mind If you think you're outclassed you are You've got to think high to rise You've got to be sure of yourself Before you can ever win the price Life's battles don't always go To the stronger or faster man But sooner or later the one who wins Is the one who thinks she can callista, EdYouKateOr and ShortLong 3
roseisarose Posted January 19, 2013 Posted January 19, 2013 "You have to decide what your highest priorities are and have the courage - pleasantly, smilingly, nonapologetically - to say 'no' to other things. Ely Posted January 27, 2013 Posted January 27, 2013 (edited) "You can't give up hope just because it's hopeless! You gotta hope even more, and cover your ears and go 'blah blah blah blah blah blah'!" -Philip J. Fry Edited January 27, 2013 by Ely callista 1
sugarmilk Posted January 28, 2013 Posted January 28, 2013 (edited) "Shoot for the moon. Even if you miss, you will land among the stars." This quote was on a poster in a classroom back in middle school and I never liked it much. Aren't the stars actually further away from Earth than the moon is? It would be much more inspirational to shoot for a star and land on the moon. ;p Edited January 28, 2013 by sugarmilk
ShortLong Posted January 28, 2013 Posted January 28, 2013 Sugarmilk, I think you are missing the point. Don't think about it so scientifically. It is a play off of the saying "Shoot for the Moon" to mean when your goal is something unattainable. So it is saying that if you dream big and work towards attaining that goal, even if you mess up and don't reach it, you will still end up somewhere better than if you hadn't tried at all. One of the reasons I like it so much is that I am an aerospace engineer, and I like the moon and stars and space. Plus every time I tell people my major, they get really intimidated.

No, I totally understand the quote. It's not a difficult concept. I just see the physical flaw in it and it makes it impossible for me to take it seriously. To each his own.

42ed Posted January 28, 2013 Posted January 28, 2013 "Climb the mountain not to plant your flag, but to embrace the challenge, enjoy the air and behold the view.
