astreaux Posted January 22, 2014 Posted January 22, 2014 Hello all, I casually read the last two months worth of postings this evening instead of doing, you know, meaningful work. But i feel so much better knowing I'm not alone in fretting right about now. I applied to twelve (read: too many) masters programs and have heard from none. But alas. Any other con law people out there? Hi! As a con law enthusiast (IR/Public Law PhD applicant), I was very thankful this afternoon for the Ninth Circuit's ruling extending Batson v Kentucky to sexual orientation. Exciting times! It gave me something to do other than obsessively reload my University of Wisconsin status page.
rchlm_618 Posted January 22, 2014 Posted January 22, 2014 So I don't want to be pessimistic but what kind of back-up plans do you guys have if PhD applications don't come through? I'm kind of stuck, because I had a killer internship in DC last summer who said they could take me back, but only if I'm in grad school. So now I'm hoping that I either (a) get into a DC school, ( get into a different school with funding, or [ideally] © get into a DC school with funding. As it stands, I'm not confident in any of those options. But, historically, UVa is soon and George Washington will likely be soon. (For the life of me, I can't find any information on the program to which I applied. It's a legal institutions and theory master's program that's primarily through the POSC department, but it's still autonomous. It seems [perhaps unexpectedly] that it's way less popular than the American politics track, but it's more relevant to my interest in legal research. Regardless, it's keeping me in limbo because I have nothing to go off of historically.) So maybe I'll have some closure in the next few weeks.

These really are exciting times to love the law (even if I have to explain why I'm not going to law school right away ad nauseum). I reeeeeeally should have applied to the Madison PhD program, even if it would have been a long shot. astreaux 1
gretagarbo Posted January 22, 2014 Posted January 22, 2014 I wish each school would just set a date for when they will announce results and let us know. This would decrease the number of times I refresh the gradcafe results page and possibly prevent my lack of productivity. totally agreed! adcomms also should have deadlines!
jeudepaume Posted January 22, 2014 Posted January 22, 2014 (edited) Wow. This thread is moving so fast I always feel like I left the room with people talking about kittens, and returned in a minute to a conversation about nuclear weapons. Or something like that. I got an email from my POI! He says (among other things) that my application is strong. I know it's no acceptance (yet?), but I'm dancing wild dances of my motherland around my laptop—it's so nice to receive some reassurance after months of silence. sylark Posted January 22, 2014 Posted January 22, 2014 totally agreed! adcomms also should have deadlines! I think if that were the case, the deadlines would be set fairly late in the game in order to avoid pressure and time constraints, though they would likely finish much earlier than that date. Essentially, there would be no change if programs were simply required to create and publicize deadlines. Further, if other parties established earlier deadlines for the programs, many of these programs would be stretched thin of resources and would likely just push their application deadlines back further, possibly to early Fall Semester. Likewise if there is a requirement that schools must make decisions within a set amount of time after recieving applications, their decision-making would suffer, and thus more students would be admitted to programs that they are not a fit, and fewer students would be admitted to programs that they are a suitable fit. The application anxiety sucks, but it is necessary to an extent.

jeudepaume Posted January 22, 2014 Posted January 22, 2014 This is great! Congrats and good luck! Thank you I sure hope that it's a good sign.
TheGnome Posted January 22, 2014 Posted January 22, 2014 I don't think a POI's email noting that your application is strong leaves much room for skepticism in the matter we are pulling for you jeudepaume 1
TakeMyCoffeeBlack Posted January 22, 2014 Posted January 22, 2014 Good morning, grad cafe folks! I hope today brings with it some good news for some of you.
IRToni Posted January 22, 2014 Posted January 22, 2014 This google document contains the current list of historical data for some programs. Please feel free to add (preferably in alphabetical order) other programs you applied to and their data. IRToni Posted January 22, 2014 Posted January 22, 2014 And don't pull a TMCB and delete all the data on IRToni One of the advantages of Google docs is that I can restore all previous versions! That way, even tech-savvy people like TMCB can use it !

TakeMyCoffeeBlack Posted January 22, 2014 Posted January 22, 2014 Had a breakthrough in my current project. Maybe I will spend a little less time refreshing this page. Then again, maybe not. astreaux 1

Thanks for sharing this. Unfortunately, someone messed up the file. I hope these are not the kind of people we will meet in doctoral school. Is it possible to upload the file with no edits allowed and/or send the original file to me and others via PM. Thanks so much!
IRToni Posted January 22, 2014 Posted January 22, 2014 Just reset the file. Now everyone can view it, but only I can edit. If you wanna add something, just send me the edits (preferably in the same format, so I only have to copy-paste) or post them here, and I'll add it in! I was hoping people wouldn't care enough about that kind of stuff, but oh well... aecp, o.j., silver_lining and 1 other 4

I was noticed this particularly for Princeton or Yale where few POIs got in touch with the candidates. What was recorded on the results page is only when PoIs get in touch with s/o before the graduate school/department sends the admission letter, I believe. Some schools, e.g. Columbia and Stanford sometimes have PoIs tell candidates before the actual decisions are out, which doesn't seem to be the case with Princeton e.g. Your PoI might still contact you afterwards, though it's also possible that they only do that at the admitted students' weekend.
strangepeace Posted January 22, 2014 Posted January 22, 2014 Has anyone claimed the Duke admit? It seems quite early for them to have made decisions already..?
boazczoine Posted January 22, 2014 Posted January 22, 2014 What was recorded on the results page is only when PoIs get in touch with s/o before the graduate school/department sends the admission letter, I believe. From what I've been told, professors are all over the map on that one--some like to contact students to tell them they've been accepted (in so many words), some like to reach out once the official notifications have gone out, some don't like to reach out until an offer has been accepted, whatever. I'm sure there are some schools with general guidelines, but I think a lot of it is just personal preference. So I think its when a professor reaches out that is a YAY moment no doubt, but no one should stress who hasn't heard from a POI. Anonymous people keep looking at my LinkedIn profile. I am almost 100% positive the majority are people in my industry but the sudden uptick is, naturally, making me wonder if adcomms are some of the hits. And, then...I become convinced I look like an unintelligent chipmunk in my profile picture that no one would want to accept to any school.
