Did anyone go to the first UW-Madison CMB interview weekend? I have mine next week and I'd like to know how it felt in general.

UMASS anyone?

Had a friend get into UMass Amherst today.  I didn't apply there so the info is 2nd hand but better than nothing.

Happy belated Valentine's Day, everyone! Hope you all had a wonderful day, be it with your significant other or your friends or your family, or even just with yourself - we all need some time to relax and tend to our own needs. (:

Ah, I applied to a different program! Thanks though!

I was at the first weekend and I heard back 10 days after so I am guessing you will probably hear back this coming Tuesday (that's when I got my result)

Awesome, thanks for the info (:

Actually, I forgot that they're interviewing a bunch of people who couldn't make the official date next week, so it may or may not take them a bit longer to make their decisions. JSYK.

Just found out yesterday one of my friends got two offers from WashU from the Developmental Biology.  I found out through somebody else.  I guess he would have told me until I got some good news myself.

I have my 6th interview coming up for Wisconsin Madison on Wed and I'm thinking about cancelling. I already got a competitive offer from my top choice and I am exhausted from all the travelling, but I feel bad about the whole ticket cost..any advice?

Hi Persimmony, I also have offers at UC Irvine and Anschutz BSP. Whats your top choice and what was your opinion of the programs ?

I would personally recommend going even if you have offers in your hands already. I think each interview is a great opportunity to learn things that you can't from school website or brochure. You might end up liking the school a lot, who knows. :)

I would definitely still go. These weekends are very exhausting; I can't imagine doing 6. However, if you committed, you should still attend. It is a great opportunity to meet more potential colleagues etc. It could reflect poorly on you in a professional sense to cancel so soon to the interview. Everyone knows everyone and you want to keep as many "friends" in as many places as possible :)

Guess I'll have to disagree with the majority opinion - I was in the same situation a couple weeks ago, and I decided to cancel. If you're sure that you're not going to attend the school, you're just wasting their time + more money (for food), and also potentially taking a spot from someone who wants it more. Canceling happens a lot, especially to schools with interviews later in the season, so I seriously doubt anyone will remember your name or even think twice about it. If you bow out gracefully (thank them for their time, apologize for the inconvenience, specify that you just want to save them more time/money), I think it's totally fine.

That said, if you think there's some probability that you'd attend the program, I would go to learn more about it. But if you're 100% sure, I think it just wastes everyone's time to go.

How did she/he get 2 offers from the same program? And yeah, that seems likely to be the case :(.

I'm going on my 7th next week, and I completely feel you on the exhaustion part. On that note, I, personally, would still go because you really never know if one of these programs is going to completely surprise you upon visiting, good or bad. That happened to me basically every interview I've been on. Also, I've heard many, many good things about Wisconsin Madison.

I guess two professors offered him positions in lab.  I'll be figuring out the details later today, but I'm happy for him.  WashU would have been an ideal school for me, so I think he is a bit hesitant to tell me since I didn't get an interview over there.

If you are absolutely sure that you will not attend there program then it might be best to cancel it is tough being cognitive coherent while being exhausted and not have the will to go.  However, you might be missing a good opportunity to scope out the school and to see if there are very interesting programs you have not heard of yet.

I liked both. I'm from Denver and I love this city, but I think grad school is a good opportunity to experience a new city so I will not be going to Anschutz BSP. UC irvine had a huge undergrad population which kind of turns me off. I think both schools have great science. I'm interested in stem cell research and Irvine has more money for that so I'd be inclined to go there over Anschutz, but my top choice is Duke.

At this point, I am 99% sure I will accept Duke's offer. I don't think I could tolerate Madison's cold cold winters...which seems like a trivial reason to choose grad schools but I have options so it kind of comes down to that. In addition to spending more of their money on food, etc., I would have 6 faculty interviews there and don't know if I can come across as excited for the program if I have a top choice in mind. Even at Weill Cornell this past few days I was feeling tired of the repetitiveness and just not as excited as I normally would be...on the other hand, Wisc-Madison was a top 3 choice for me, and maybe I'd want to do a post-doc there later down the road...gosh I keep going back and forth.

Persimmony, were you interviewing for Weill Cornell BCMB? I was there for the IMP program. What do you think about the school in general?

Yep, maybe I saw you there. I did like it there and the science is great especially with the connections to Sloan Kettering and all the nearby schools. For me personally, I did not like the idea of paying $950+ to live in a cramped apartment or ~$1200 for a studio. Even with the 33.5k stipend or whatever it was, it'd still be stretching it. Also, I think living in such a big city surrounded by tons of people would wear on me...in hindsight I really should have considered these things before applying  -_-

I am on the same page too. I like the fact that they have a strong immuno program + connections to SKI and Rockefeller. However, I am not a fan of the housing either. In addition, I prefer being on an actual campus instead of being in scattered buildings in the city. At least, it is a great place with great science so I will still put it on the table if they ever give me an offer

Just got an email from the Irvine CMB director telling me to hold off on accepting offers from other schools because I'm near the top of the wait list, and that it is likely that I will be admitted. Score!

In other news, anyone visited or looked into U of Wisconsin-Madison's Cellular and Molecular Pathology program?
