LennyBound Posted March 3, 2015 Posted March 3, 2015 I realize this is a shot in the dark, but is there anyone else here who is wait-listed or accepted at Indiana's History and Philosophy of Science program? I've exchanged a couple messages with "dullandwitlessboy," but haven't heard from anyone else. On the admission results page there are currently four wait-lists posted and no acceptances.
a_for_aporia Posted March 3, 2015 Posted March 3, 2015 So, looks like about two thirds of the users on TGC are on the wait list at UW Madison. MattDest, qualiafreak, Cecinestpasunphilosophe and 2 others 5
qualiafreak Posted March 3, 2015 Posted March 3, 2015 So.. Wisconsin-Madison has just sent out a bunch of wait list emails. (I received one and saw a bunch here on result page.) Anyone have any experience of their wait list structures? Is it AOI-divided? (Given how my visit next week goes, I might take myself off the list, but I'm still curious.) I second this question!!!! I would imagine it's AOI divided or else it would seem odd to have such a big wait list?? I have no idea how the minds of admissions committees work but if anyone has any insight into this at UW Madison, I think we're all curious! Also I've heard of the 3 people who are planning on turning down their wait list offers, but does anyone know how many people were actually accepted into the program and/or heard anything about those people turning the offer down???
tacitmonument Posted March 3, 2015 Posted March 3, 2015 I have removed myself from the alternate list at Vanderbilt, as I've been accepted to U of Toronto's direct entry Ph.D. in English... I really, really hope this helps someone out! qualiafreak 1
a_for_aporia Posted March 3, 2015 Posted March 3, 2015 To anyone who does ethics and/or meta-ethics and with an offer from or wait listed at UW Madison, this is probably of (major) interest: http://leiterreports.typepad.com/blog/2015/03/shafer-landau-from-wisconsin-to-north-carolina.html mjf1240 1

Unfortunately, yes, I'd expect it will drop them. Russ is arguably the biggest name there. Certainly one of the biggest names at their department. But it's especially relevant for people doing ethics & meta-ethics.
Nastasya_Filippovna Posted March 3, 2015 Posted March 3, 2015 oh god maybe this will clear out a lot of people off the acceptance and waitlist - do you think? I have no interest in ethics (as an area of specialization I mean LOL). qualiafreak 1
NathanKellen Posted March 3, 2015 Posted March 3, 2015 So, looks like about two thirds of the users on TGC are on the wait list at UW Madison. UW-Madison has a tendency to do a very, very long waitlist each year, even dating back to when I was doing applications.

Sorry, me again! I received an email from the DGS this morning offering me admission. The way she made it seem, the first round of funding decisions were made very recently (as recently as this morning), and it doesn't appear that anyone had been offered admissions before today. Hope that helps! LennyBound 1
mjf1240 Posted March 3, 2015 Posted March 3, 2015 New to this forum, but I thought it would be good to see how other people are faring. I applied at 11 philosophy PhD programs, and heard back form 9 of them. 1 acceptance, 2 rejections, and 6 waitlisted. Are so many waitlistings (for lack of a better word) normal? The schools I am waitlisted at run the gamut from UVA and OSU, to UNC and Notre Dame. Should I just take this all as bad news?

dullandwitlessboy Posted March 3, 2015 Posted March 3, 2015 Can someone claim the CUNY wait lists? I can! I'm on my phone, so I can't update my signature, but I got a very short email informing me I was on the waitlist this afternoon.
riverstyx Posted March 4, 2015 Posted March 4, 2015 (edited) UW-Madison has a tendency to do a very, very long waitlist each year, even dating back to when I was doing applications. Why do they do such a big waitlist? Is it because a lot of people turn down their initial offers and so they need a large number of waitlists from which to choose? How do people think the loss of Russ Shafer-Landau will impacy people's decisions to attend? Edited March 4, 2015 by riverstyx

Being on 6 wait lists gives you a pretty great chance on being admitted off at least one of them. mjf1240 1

reixis Posted March 4, 2015 Posted March 4, 2015 (edited) Does anyone know anything about Harvard holding on to internal waitlists? I have an international deadline approaching this week and I asked the DGS for an update (I explained my situation), but it's been a few days and I got no answer I think this is unlikely since waitlists were posted already, but I'm getting a little anxious since my decision will depend on my status there... LoopTheSheep Posted March 5, 2015 Posted March 5, 2015 Does anyone know anything about Amherst's waitlist? I was notified on Sunday and have been stressing ever since. I was told i have a "good chance," bit I'm thinking that i shouldn't be reading much into it. If anyone has any insights I'd greatly appreciate it!

Hi LoopTheSheep, I received an email with similar wording. Hopefully a few more posts like this will shed light on whether everybody on the waitlist was told that, or only a few.

Hopefully a few more posts like this will shed light on whether everybody on the waitlist was told that, or only a few. I certainly hope so. I was hoping for a bit of a respite after the stress of the past few months, but now this waitlist is dragging it all out. Knowing, even roughly, what the chances are would help immensely. FiatRatio! Posted March 5, 2015 Posted March 5, 2015 I was waitlisted at Baylor. Not sure how many others are on the waitlist, I only see one on grad cafe besides myself. After speaking with the DGS at Baylor, he sounded optimistic about those on the waitlist receiving offers this year. If you still haven't been offered acceptance, here's two pieces of news you might appreciate: 1) Last year Baylor accepted half of the people on their waitlist and 2) One of the students Baylor really wanted this year was accepted at MIT. Source: I'm a Baylor alum taking a gap year and I'm sitting in on a class with a professor on the admissions committee. He mentioned (1) and (2) in class Tuesday.
Nastasya_Filippovna Posted March 5, 2015 Posted March 5, 2015 Just got waitlisted at Purdue- does anybody know Purdue's waitlist history? Small or large? This is one of the programs I like a lot so I hope this is encouraging!
Willaem Posted March 5, 2015 Posted March 5, 2015 I've just removed myself from the waiting lists at Ohio State, UMass Amherst, U Maryland College Park and Indiana University. I've also turned down a funded offer from UC Santa Barbara. I hope this helps someone!
