pterosaur
@hippyscientist - If it weren't for cooking, I might have zero social life. I have no idea what to do with people except offer to make them food.

I started designing my perfect tiny house when I was about 8 (I even have evidence from elementary school art classes) way before tiny houses were a thing. I used to have an issue with being introverted, but I'm okay with it now. I float around in my own little world, especially when I'm at home. 26 minutes ago, hippyscientist said: @Neist and @pterosaur I am a nester too. I love my own space - it doesn't have to be big but it has to be mine. Some of the tiny houses though, would be great for just me, but as soon as a dog or SO came into the picture I just don't see them as viable. Mind you - my idea of what constitutes a tiny house is ~ 50 sq ft. At this point in my life anything more than ~550 sq ft is too big for me. Is that considered small to Americans? I don't know! But I'm okay with the social side of living alone - I can cook, and cook well so when people find this out about me they tend to want to come over for dinner. That's fine by me! Bring some ingredients/dessert/wine and absolutely no problemo. Most of my social life has revolved around me cooking for people! @rhombusbombus thank you! it is exciting. Hope your apartment works out too ~550 square feet would be a small-medium apartment, and certainly not too small by my standards. I think I'd need around 150 square feet to be comfortable. I have too many books and whatnot. I can't imagine getting rid of my books, although I think I'm going to pick up a tablet and start going e-book for most titles, if available. Yeah I love my books but moving all over the place has meant I've lost many. I've transitioned to my Kindle for now, but I can't wait to start amassing some paper copies again. @pterosaur mmmm cooking. People who can cook well are always awesome
klader
3 hours ago, Effloresce said: congrats!!! i am nervous too even after being out of the house for almost 6 years (undergrad + two years working). there's a blog for vandy students, and an undergrad to PhD student said they had the same issue, but ended up rooming with someone else who had been out of school for a bit already and was used to "adulting". when i moved from undergrad to DC (i had two weeks in between graduation and moving), i did a TON of research beforehand for apartments, living in the area etc..and the transition wasn't too awful. it also helped that there was a listserv for other fellows in the area listing available housing, furniture for sale, and people looking for roommates. Thanks for sharing your experience! I'm sure that I'll be able to transition eventually, but since I've always hated change, it might not be smooth sailing in the beginning But it's good to know other people have their qualms about it as well. And to chime in about nesting and such, I nest as well!! I definitely plan on living alone because I'm an introvert. I'm friendly and outgoing and everything, but I sincerely need to be able to recharge by myself at the end of the day, so I'm not keen on having roommates. This is the more expensive option, of course, but can you really put a price tag on your peace of mind?
Effloresce
in regards to introvertedness, @pterosaur I live with three people currently, and most of our interactions are: "Effloresce! Hey, I haven't seen you in ages! I thought you weren't here!" "Yeah...I've been here the whole time..." I really need to work on interacting more. klader

Cat_Robutt
@gingin6789 congrats! I love reading all the posts here and seeing so much support....it's like there's this kinship, and it's really neat. For the ongoing conversation on introversion, I think it would be fun for those of us attending the same school to have potluck dinners and/or book exchanges. Cooking also helps me extend out of my little shy self, and I can imagine all of us love to read. After all.....we're pursuing advanced degrees....that probably means we're nerdy/geeky. rhombusbombus

jlt646
Before I went back to school, I was a baker! For money! (and, for @hippyscientist, most of my baking career was gluten-free!) Now I have this problem where I try recipes all the time and don't love eating baked things as much, so the people around me get to benefit from my kitchen boredom. I'm psyched to be at PSU with folks who like to eat. (: rhombusbombus

knp
I find it so interesting that you introverts need alone time for this! As a (mild) introvert, in graduate school I expect to have to live with somebody. If I were doing a Loud Job With Lots of Talking—high school teacher, e.g., or customer service—I would need my own place in a major way. But graduate work in the humanities is so quiet and basically just "reading, always, all the time, except for the occasional talking about the reading" that I couldn't. As far as I can tell, I need 30 minutes of speaking with other humans every day or I start feeling very unhappy, and probably 2-3 hours of quiet time. I haven't had a job where I push the limits of my ability to engage with others, but graduate school feels like it's more likely to fall off the "alone" end of the seesaw than the "together" one. My cousin moved from Minnesota to Arizona and she loves it there. I think amazing coffee is in order! When I celebrate I put ice cream and a bit of baileys into my coffee.
