I work at UMich and I was told that they divide the applications by subdisciplines and then each subdiscipline is responsible for their own interview calls. From the way I understood it, you have a pretty good chance of getting admitted after that so it's not really an interview. But they said to contact professors we are interested in working with. I was surprised to hear back so soon considering I submitted the application on the last day. But I met a bunch of the professors and students at a conference and my PI went to grad school with one of the professors I am interested in working with so I feel like that may have had something to do with it. She was like "you seem like a fit at Michigan but the admissions department has the final say for the overwhelming number of applications. I wish you the best with your academic endeavors."
