I've noticed that in my department most folks wear more business casual / formal businesswear. It's because we're in a more business professional enviornment, and alot of the folks are already working in those types of fields (government), and they come straight from work (as do myself). On weekends, I would just go to school wearing comfortable but nice clothing. The way I see it, networking is huge and you never know who you will meet and when.... I dress to at least give a decent first impression.

Im trying not to stress.... but it's there. I am just currently trying to focus on the reading part of it... and make sure I have read all the assignments before class begins. I know I will be lost anyway, but at least I will have something to go to class with.

That's great advice... I did pick a topic for my first paper that was a touchy subject in California.... yay learning to write policies.

Thank you! I did exactly that. I went over it a number of extra times... but that's all I could do... Yeah, from what I understand this is the "baseline" paper... and from there we're going to be broken down and rebuilt like bootcamp. I just hope I wont have to be broken too much. Lucky! I got my syllabi in the first week of July... Had so many books to read, publications, theses, and 3 papers to write by the first weekend. One of the papers was due today... I turned it in last week. Ugh. I hope all is well with you hon. I am using my 3 day weekend this weekend to make sure I am caught up on everything and prepared. So nervous!

My classes gave out their syllabi a month ago. I assume a lot of classes do not.... but apparently my department does because there is so much reading involved early on before classes start. I had 5 books, 3 thesis, and 10 publications to read/skim through... and a paper to write all before my classes start in 10 days from now.

Does anyone have their first assignment yet? I have one. Due on the 26th. It is a silly little one, but still.... it's giving my stomach flip/flops. It's a 2-3 page "memo" but they are using it as a baseline for writing skills. I know I am not perfect, and I do not expect to be... but I am terrified on how "bad" it will be and disappointing the professor. Am I just freaking out for nothing?

I am hunkering down today, to start working on my fist paper. :/ Kinda nervous. My son's girlfriend is starting her first year as an undergrad, next week. I am freaking out that school starts in just over 3 weeks. Where did my prep-time go!!!!???

Book 3 almost done. Feeling accomplished. 2 more books, a few chapters in another, and 3 papers to finish before the 26th. Can I do it????

Hell has begun. August 1st, all of a sudden my department woke up and I had tons of emails, and my final syllabus.

Yes. I have to write all of my papers in APA due to the social science aspect.... I have been using it now for a while though. I had to write a thesis for my bachelor's degree and it was in APA format.

Ya'll are making me jealous!!! I want to move up to Juneau. My hubby and I went there for our Honeymoon and fell in love! I live in NorCal myself... and although I love it here, it's way too hot for me. Being nervous is part of the deal I guess. I am trying to relax, but I can't as I have my first assignment in hand (due a week before school even starts) and I have 5 books to read in the next 30 days. :/

Forcing myself to sit down on a Sunday to read... so hard to do. I have 37 days til my first assignment is due... and I have another 4 books to read, besides the one I am working on.

MPA/MPP for Spring admission possible?

I believe CSU Northridge allows a spring admission, if I remember correctly. They also have an online program too. -
I have a Lenovo Yoga, and I LOVE it. It's a laptop AND a tablet, and I have SPSS on it and it works just fine. I've had it a year, and I can honestly say it's the best laptop I have ever owned. The functionality is endless, it's very light and compact, even the powerpack cord is small. I have an external DVD writer I bought for it ($40), which is so thin and light you don't even notice it in your bag. Next, I am going to get an external hard drive. My laptop has a 256 SSD... it's great! I recommend it as an option!

I feel like a little kid counting down to the day I start. But honestly, I am terrified. I know I am as prepared as I am going to be. But I am afraid of how little I will know in comparison to my classmates. Life as I know it will be changed for the next 3 years.

Absolutely. Terrified. Although I am a pretty confident person, I feel I am back down to the quivering-legs-young-undergrad-first-time-in-college scenario from 15 years ago.

Is it crazy to be checking your department page, to see if the new syllabi are up yet? Every day. Couple of times a day.
