  2. One year a long time ago, there were penguins who didn't wear hats when swimming. This made their mothers livid. "Unacceptable!" Frightened, they screamed, "Bears!" Nobody seemed convinced so instead of going swimming they tried juggling. Their mothers tried everything they thought would teach her a skill. However, she couldn't even make oatmeal without disastrous results.
  3. Phone just went beep - with the tone for my work/school email Interview request by one of my primary POIs for Tuesday.
  4. I'm 55, and still tell them that I still want to be a cowboy. Anyway - I just got notified that my primary POI wants to have an interview with me next week.

  11. I'm 50+ currently finishing a master's in info science, and applying to the PhD program in the same. About 95% of the other students in the master's program are about the same age as my oldest 2 kids (26 year old twins), the other 5% are in the 45-60 range. The PhD program I am applying to is pretty evenly split between late 20's early 30's and the 45+ group, so it is a bit different from what you are experiencing - they are expecting older students in this case, as the master's is a prereq for application

  14. I doubt that it is 3% of people over 40 take the GRE exam, but rather 3% of the people who take the GRE exam are over 40. Anyway, I was one of that 3% - I took the GRE a few weeks before my 52nd birthday. I probably could have scored better if I had actually spent more ime reviewing for the exam, but I did well enough on the verbal and quant sections to get into a master's program, and the scores were high enough that I did not retake the exam before applying to a PhD program. What I did notice was that the exam seemed to zero in on what my weaknesses were in mathematics, so my advice would be to concentrate on what your weak areas are before taking the exam.
  15. The application deadline for most Rutgers programs was Jan 15, so they are only starting to look at applications this week - you probably won't hear anything from them until the end of January or early February.
  16. That is probably one of the most evil/cruel things that the admissions department could do - Emailing you that they made a decision, and are mailing you the results. They dropped the mail into the department outbox (probably after the mail pickup for the day) on Friday. Nothing gets picked up on Saturday ot Sunday Monday happened to be a Federal holiday - no mail movement It gets picked up by the school's internal mail on Tuesday afternoon Delivered to the post office on Wednesday morning 4 more days before it gets to you oops - it is now Sunday - no mail delivery fingers crossed for Monday.

  23. Today is the application deadline for the single program that I am applying for, all LORs are in and now all I need to do is wait. Tomorrow is a holiday, so nothing is going to happen. I figure if that my application totally sucks, I will get a rejection in a week or so, on the other hand if my application is absolutely stellar, then I should get a positive answer in the same timeframe. In reality, my application is somewhere in between total crap and best ever. So, for now, all I can to do is wait (and wait, and wait and wait...). Most likely I should get a response either way in about 4 weeks. Waiting sucks.
