  1. I received an invitation to interview at SFA. I was told that they will be emailing all applicants today.
  2. I applied to SFA, Lamar, and UH. Still anxiously waiting lol.
  3. Has anyone applied to Lamar Univ/SFA (this cycle or previous cycles)? I'm just wondering when we will hear from the schools (regarding interviews). Also, if you attend either school, how are you liking the program/what was the interview process like? Thanks
  4. Haven't heard from U of H. I read online that they notify mid-march, but I don't know how accurate that is.
  5. Thank you for this! I am currently working as an SLP-A and the work experience has altered how I view the field from a financial standpoint. Unfortunately, there is A LOT of misinformation regarding what grads can expect to make. I couldn't justify taking out 100k+ to attend graduate school. I am looking at taking on ~35k and that freaks me out...
  6. My situation is a little bit different. I started working in the field after graduating from college 1.5 years ago and worked hard to save up as much as possible. I paid down my undergrad loans to 8k. If I am admitted into a program this year (finger crossed), I will have 20k of savings to fund my studies. I will also apply to scholarships and hope to receive funding from my schools. The programs I am applying to cost ~25k total (not including living expenses), so ~40k (including living expenses). I will use my savings, in addition to any scholarships/funding I receive. I am also considering working PT in home health if the opportunity presents itself (very flex hours and great money).
  7. Hi quick question, how did your daughter received the TPEG? Was it offered to her by the department when she was admitted or did she apply for it? I am applying this cycle and am hoping to receive funding. Thank you!
  8. Not to pry, but is that also including living expenses? If so, that's not bad. My in-state schools are roughly 20-25k, but not including rent/food/etc. How realistic to work is it during a program? It seems to be discouraged, but you gotta do what you gotta do...
  9. Yeah, I don't trust loan forgiveness anymore sadly. Welp.
  10. Hi everyone! I am a post-grad SLPA currently applying for graduate school this cycle. For those of you who are currently enrolled or have already graduated, how much debt will/did you incur from your graduate studies? I know it can vary depending on out-of-state vs. in-state tuition, but I am having a hard time finding a realistic average. Also, for those of you already working in the field, what are salaries like? Again, I know this is varies depending on setting/geographic location, but when I research this information it looks like the average is ~55-70k with little growth over time. Is it a struggle to pay of student loans or is it completely feasible, combined with costs of living and other expenses? Huge thanks in advance!
  11. I love this thread! HOPES: I'd be happy to be admitted into any program. After two years of working as an SLPA, I'm ready to take my career to the next level. DREAMS: I'm crossing my fingers for the University of Houston. I have been working in the city plus my family and boyfriend live here. It would be great to have that support system and maybe live at home to save money. Also, it would be great if I could continue doing home health throughout the program on a part-time basis. GUESSES: Honestly, I have no idea... I studied at UT Austin, graduated with a good GPA, and have work, volunteer, and research experience, but it's such a toss up. My GRE scores are mediocre (standardized tests are the worst).
  12. Thank you! It has been just over a week since I sent my initial emails, so I am planning to give them until the weekend and follow-up next Monday. Sigh. lol. I am hoping for a traditional program and I am applying everywhere in Texas. How about you?
  13. Hi everyone. I emailed my professors from undergrad a week ago, requesting letters of recommendation for graduate school. Crickets, no response. I am planning to follow up later this week or early next week, but I am super anxious about this. Have any of you been in this situation before? Unfortunately, it is more difficult for me to go back to my university because I live over 3 hours away and would need to put in the time from work, which I can't do unless I can - with certainty - have an appointment with my professors. I had even expressed in my emails that I would be happy to schedule a meeting with them to discuss my letters. I'm not sure what to do aside from follow-up, but beyond that, I'm very worried. :/
  14. I feel the struggle, haha. I have a similar GPA. Our major has conditioned us to view ~3.6 as an average/mediocre GPA, welp.
  15. I will be retaking my GRE in October
  16. Ok thanks. When would be the appropriate time to start asking? My applications are not officially open yet and are not due until January/February. I recall a professor saying that she required a minimum of 6 weeks notice. I was thinking of contacting my profs in September. When are y'all planning to reach out?
  17. Hi everyone! I have been out of school for over a year (graduated May 2015) and will be applying for graduate school this Fall. For those of you who did not enter grad school immediately after college, how did you go about asking professors of letters of recommendation? During undergrad, one of my professors offered to write me a LoR and I have a few others in mind to ask. Unfortunately, due to my work schedule and my university being a few hours away, it would be difficult for me to go to campus to talk to them. I have heard that is it normal to email professors, how did y'all ask? I am also worried that I will contact them via email and get no response.. Thanks everyone!
  18. @Speechster thank you! Congratulations on getting into all of those schools, especially after going through several rounds (I am trying to be as realistic with myself about my chances/the universities I am applying to and how many times I am willing to apply until I go to plan B ). Your input was very helpful, especially regarding the SoP. I was hoping to ask my SLP supervisor to write me a letter; however, some of the schools I am planning to apply to prefer academic references.
  19. Thank you all for your help! If anyone else has any input/advice, it would be much appreciated!
  20. Hi everyone! I will be applying for graduate schools this fall and I am super nervous about the application process, as programs are so competitive. I graduated last May from UT Austin with a 3.6 cumulative GPA and 3.7 major GPA - I worry that this is on the low end... During undergrad, I worked (not related to the field), shadowed at a pediatric speech and language clinic for a year (over 100 volunteer and observation hours), and did research one summer. Since graduating, I have been working as a bilingual SLP-A at pediatric clinic (I also see some of my kids at their schools) and recently started seeing a few clients through home health. Through work I have gained clinical experience and applied my undergrad foundation to therapy. In addition, I have had the opportunity to administer (with an SLP present) assessments. I have 2 professors in mind for LORs; however, I am planning to ask my SLP supervisor to write me a LOR too. Currently, I have been studying to retake the GRE...blehh. What do y'all think? I am trying to be as competitive as possible, and since this is my first time applying, any advice would be helpful! Thanks!
  21. Hi everyone! I am graduating next month (eek) from the University of Texas at Austin and I decided I prefer to wait a year before applying to graduate school. I am looking to work as a SLP-A to gain experience in the field, but I still feel like my resume is slightly lacking... I was hoping any of you who are currently in programs/have been admitted can look at my stats. Also, I have not yet taken the GRE - I will this fall. Overall GPA: projected to be ~3.7 CSD GPA: ~3.75 I am bilingual - English and Spanish I worked for 3 years of my undergrad, not in the field, but I feel like it is something that the admissions should take note of. I volunteered/observed at a pediatric speech clinic for an entire school year, acquiring 100 hours of observation. I previously worked as a reading and math teacher to Elementary-aged kiddos at a tutoring center (1.5 years). I was a research assistant last summer (2014). Any thoughts? I mainly looking for ideas for how to add to my resume because I feel like it is slightly lacking. Hopefully, a SLP-A position will help.
