I considered applying to a couple of programs that were in the "process" of accreditation (like OHSU), and my director/PIs/mentors immediately said "Absolutely not."

I'm curious why "absolutely not"? I can see why you would want to refrain from programs that are not APA accred and do not plan on getting it, but programs that are in the process usually will have the accred (unless they're complete shit) by the time you graduate. Obviously you would have to cultivate your list appropriately, but for example, UHCL was "in the process" two years ago and I applied (then) anyways because it's a reputable school and had very little chance of NOT being accred. There's a time barrier between a program's inception and applying, which is why a lot of good programs are still "in process" during their first few years.

Well, I just got a rejection email from my first choice program :( Really not looking good for a couple other schools as well.  Trying to stay optimistic, as there are 3 more that I haven't heard from, but hard not to feel pessimistic at this point...

Aww :( UTSW is notoriously hard to get into across the board. I actually interviewed there many years ago for their masters of nutrition program (long story) and the interview process was brutal - they chewed me up and spit me out haha. I know this sounds like a "sour grapes" situation but fingers crossed you hear some good news soon!

  3. Alas, I think I'm out of the running for Drexel. Most of the calls seem to have gone out this week from all of my POIs (you're asked to rank your top 3 on the application), and I didn't receive anything. I'm not writing anything off until the end of next week, but I think it might be time to have my first application season ugly cry :') Looking through the current student profiles on my POI's lab page, I'm actually not surprised. Most of their students have 2+ years of paid lab manager/research coordinator work experience in an eating disorders lab (my research interest). I... definitely do not, haha.

I'm curious as to how many of you applied to both clinical and counseling PhD programs. I've had one clinical interview so far, and I have a counseling one coming up. If you have applied/interviewed for both programs, can you share some insight on your experience? The two counseling programs I applied to have faculty conducting research that overlaps with my interests. But the majority of the programs I applied to are clinical, as I have a strong interest in trauma research.

I was in a similar boat - applied mainly to clinical programs, but had two counseling programs on my radar since I was a good research match with POIs. You might get a question about "why counseling psychology specifically", but otherwise the questions will be very similar - e.g. "why our program", "what are your research interests", etc.

I have a very similar problem - my "reach" program was my top pick, naturally. The program is great, the research fit with my POI is so perfect, and I would be over the moon to do the work she's doing. (Not to mention the school has a great football team, is in a great location, and I would always have things to do in the area). The perks are endless.. But my GREs are lower than their averages and I haven't heard anything.

    *Insert sad music here*

Sending you all the good vibes!! Hopefully we both hear something soon!

I’m also waiting on Widener. (And 7 other psy.d. programs) 2 people on the results page said they have interviews, so I’m not sure what that means for those of us who haven’t heard.

PsyD programs tend to interview later, so don't give up hope! I have a friend who applied to Widener and she hasn't heard back yet either. Fingers crossed for us all!

  7. Look for masters programs in "Experimental Psychology" (some of them will be called that, and some will just be called a masters in "Psychology", but some digging will reveal whether they are more applied or more experimental). Those programs will train you well in research methods and statistics (many of them require a short thesis, and research is built in to the program).

  8. For those of you going to interviews up north - I have a silly question. It will probably be snowing when I head up, so I'd like to wear boots to travel to the interview site (I'm staying at an Airbnb that's only a few blocks away, so not really worth it to get an Uber). I'd then like to change into my dress heels for the actual interview day. It's not going to be weird if I carry around a plastic bag with my boots in it, right? O___o

I'm worried mostly for the Q. I am stellar at stats but the math they have on the GRE is BRUTAL. Like, I don't remember how to do math from 8th grade lol. Those scores are beautiful :')

Same haha. Geometry and probability killed me. I like Magoosh you can customize your study (e.g. choose from different areas, difficulties, question types), and each question has both a written out explanation and a video explanation (for those who are more audio/visual learners vs. verbal/written).

  10. I basically brute forced all of Magoosh's math problems a week before the exam, haha. I didn't study at all for verbal or writing. My scores were 168V / 163Q / 5.5AW. My starting scores were in the mid-150's so I was very happy. The GRE questions felt much easier than Magoosh's, so I had a boost of confidence during the exam which definitely helped with my performance.
