  1. If you're trying to get into a PhD program, the number one thing you can do you boost your chances is to get research experience (and preferably some posters and publications). If you're trying to get into a PsyD or practice-heavy program, get real clinical experience. Be an MHT or a case manager. It sounds like you're getting some related experience at your internship in terms of doing intakes (and learning about the medical admin side is always useful). But no, I would put volunteering at crisis lines VERY low on the priority list. No one cares. And surprisingly, many mental health professionals think they do more harm than good, so in some cases it might even work against you. As an illustrative example: I used to help with screening clinical internship resumes. I threw out any ones that mentioned 7 Cups.
  2. Also older and unconventional (this is a.... third career for me.....) I actually use my variety of jobs as one of my biggest "strengths" when asked in interviews because it means I've worked with folks from such very diverse backgrounds. Plus, I always have great stories to share when I need to make small talk I've also found that being more experienced/older means that I am not nervous AT ALL on interview days. It's easy to pick out the inexperienced folks because they look so uncomfortable in their suits and aren't quite sure how to conduct themselves. I didn't even wear a suit (chiffon blouse + slacks ftw) but I felt so confident and genuinely enjoyed making small talk and interacting with staff and faculty. It just came very naturally to me. I haven't needed to prep for any of my interviews at all.
  3. I'm going to chime in with my 2c. I wouldn't call CTL a clinical experience (and frankly, some of these crisis line experiences are more harmful than helpful - don't get me started on 7 Cups. Thankfully CTL has pretty robust training). A lot of that is just supportive listening, in the vein of a peer support. And you're largely talking from a script anyways. With a bachelor's, you can work as an MHT/BHT, and THAT I would count as clinical experience since you're managing a psychiatric milieu and/or co-running groups. Other things I would consider clinical experience: ABA, internships where you have supervised patient interaction, mental health camps for youth with developmental disabilities. Things that I would not consider clinical experience: "volunteering" at a shelter, shadowing, anything with NAMI
  4. I have with a few of mine! They asked me generic questions e.g. why this program, how did you hear about us, how do you feel about living in this city, etc. They also offered to answer questions about program logistics (e.g. practical timelines, scholarships, etc). For me, a lot of our time was spent talking about advanced standing since I already have a masters and was applying for programs which would allow me to transfer courses.
  5. Insiders Guide says for UMSL 167 applied and 9 accepted. South Bama, 130 applied and 10 accepted. These are numbers from the 2017 cycle. Not for this year, but better than nothing!
  6. They won't xD. Not for admissions anyways. Your clinical practice/externship sites will though, but that's a concern for a year or two in the future
  7. From what I've noticed, the research-based programs (PhDs mainly) tend to do a lot of individual interviews to test for fit with your POI, lab, and current students. The PsyD programs have a TON of group interviews because they want to see how you react to other people / how you are in a room (e.g. a predictor of what kind of clinician you'll be). Personally I hate group interviews, everyone is always trying to one-up each other and appears really fake, but it is what it is.
  8. Definitely be prepared to answer the question, "Why Counseling Psychology and not Clinical Psychology?"
  9. They're waiting to see if others decline the opportunity to interview. Given the crapshoot that application cycles are, I doubt anyone would say no to an interview unless they're REALLY strapped for cash or already got into their top choice. That said, Suffolk's interview is much later so maybe someone will change their mind between now and then. Good luck!!
  10. Welp. I came back from an interview weekend with the flu. Thank god I don't have my next interview for another 2 weeks. I feel like death. All of this travel and exposure to germs is not doing my any favors.
  11. Got my official rejection from FDU. They offered to interview me for one of their masters programs, but I already have a masters in a related area haha. Oh well, you win some you lose some! Good luck to those who got invites!
  12. Seconding re: Fairleigh Dickinson. I feel like they're probably done but I'm still holding out hope haha.
  13. School: Chestnut Hill College Concentration: Clinical Type: PsyD Date of acceptance: 1/29/2019 Notified by: Call from director of admissions
  14. Suffolk has historically sent out all their invites, rejections, and wait-list notifications on the same day. I would call to check because you should have heard back one way or another.
  15. School: Suffolk University Type: Clinical PhD Date of invite: 01/28/2019 Type of invite: Mass email Interview date(s): 03/01/2019 and 03/02/2019 (social on the 1st, actual interview on the 2nd). The RSVP form asks you to identify 2-3 POI you want to interview with. Mine are SR and MS. FINALLY!!!
  16. I did the same with my SOP. The application page specifically states that all profs review apps together, but to keep in mind how our research interests link up with faculty members. I figured it was safe to list a few I was interested in just in case. EM was one of my mine too, along with KL and JRL. Also, totally random thought... why do we give POI names in initial form? Anyone can go to the faculty page and look up who we're referring to lol. I guess it's for efficiency's sake but I've always thought it silly how secretive some folks can be about POI identities.
  17. Person on the results page who called Suffolk, thank you! Now I can tone down the obsessing for a few days lol.
  18. Ugh. So. Work schedule and flight plans mean I'm going to miss an optional student social at one of the programs I'm interviewing at. Does this put me at a distinct disadvantage? It's one of my top programs and I SO desperately want to make a good impression, but there is also absolutely no way I can get out of work.
  19. lol I was just reading that. Part of me wants to grab the popcorn, the other part of me wants them to stop having a conversation on the results page >___>
  20. Fairleigh Dickinson poster on the results page, who was your POI?
  21. I applied to the PsyD, not the PhD. Still no news from Suffolk :((
  22. Just waiting on four more schools now - Fairleigh Dickinson, Rutgers, Springfield, and Suffolk. I know the latter three haven't sent anything, but FDU is driving me crazy. 1 or 2 folks have reported invites but I don't know if they've all been sent out or if they're coming in waves. I might call on Monday to follow up b/c I think the interview date is soon...
