Personally, I wouldn't email every school on your list. I figure professors are too busy for that. I think that's a really valid point. I only emailed one school on my list, and it was the one that I didn't finish the application for. I emailed them because their website specifically said to email them so they could send you further info. Since I had questions definitely not answered from the skimpy amount of information on their site, I emailed them thinking they'd send me a packet. Nope. They told me to check the website that told me to email them. Their entire wording on their website was very off-putting to me. Grad school is an experience for people who can be independently motivated BUT it's also a huge collaboration between the professors, your cohort, and you. My gut told me that they were probably a bad fit just from their site.

Hoping to get into SLP field
slporbust2016 replied to Bluedog's topic in Speech-Language Pathology Forum
I have't really looked at three-year programs, but I'd carefully look at their stats for the people that they admit before spending money on applications. My guess is that you're going to need to take pre-req courses and prove that you can learn the material and get stellar grades in the field. If you can do that, then your grades from 10 years ago won't matter nearly as much to lots of schools. A piece of advice that I received is that grad schools are looking for people who can do the work, finish the program, and reflect well on them. That's why track records matter to them. You want to show them that you have what it takes. Good luck! -
Going along with what mcamp said, remember that you are the consumer. Sure, grad school is hard to get into, but once you're in, you're going to be the one paying for and utilizing the materials to get through. If a school is down-right rude to you during the application process and comes across as really unprofessional, you might want to pick a different school to apply to. If a school is stingy with their info and expectations, that might be a deal breaker. Look for a good fit for you as well as a place that you can get into. There was a school that I was in the process of applying to that I didn't finish the application for because there were some red flags that told me we would be a bad fit. Also, chill out. Stressing about it every single day will not change the outcome. Sure, be organized and stick to your timeline of getting things done, but once those apps are with the adcomms, it's time to let it go until you get answers back. (I did not follow this advice and drove my family nuts.)

Online Hearing Science Course This Summer
slporbust2016 replied to MrsH's topic in Speech-Language Pathology Forum
Will Utah State's 5070 work? Dromey's a great instructor, and that's a really interesting class. -
Can you call the department secretary and ask? That's probably what I'd do.

Every state has different rules, so it depends on the state. You often need 100 hours, though, and you won't have that. In addition to the general USU FB group, there is also a group for each class. They can be very helpful. There's also an older forum with some info that still comes in handy: usucomdforum.com For 3100, I found anatomyzone.com to be really helpful. More helpful than the book for sure. The prof changed halfway through the class when I took it, and I greatly prefer the prof for the second half. 2500 has a lot of info that gets tested on that seems insignificant. Be prepared for it. I found it helpful to do quizlets by a lot of different people for all of the classes to get exposure to more questions. Good luck!

I still haven't heard a single thing from this program. I'm entirely uncertain as to why that would be, and I'm frustrated on behalf of the other people I know waiting to hear back from them. No change on portal. No email. No nothing. I've already decided to go to a different program, but it's perplexing, and I'd like to know that they actually looked at my application.

Firsthand reviews of Graduate Programs
slporbust2016 replied to CBG321's topic in Speech-Language Pathology Forum
I can't speak to that school in specific, but I can tell you something an SLP I've observed told me. She said in undergrad, everyone was competitive and very cutthroat at her program. She stayed at the same school for grad school, and 2/3 of her classmates were also from the same program, but they all shifted since they were no longer competing against each other to get into grad school, and her cohort is still close 15+ years later. I think taking the stress of grad school admissions out of it would definitely alter the dynamic for many. -
USU Post-Bach (Canadian Student)
slporbust2016 replied to hopetobeSLP's topic in Speech-Language Pathology Forum
I did enjoy it for the most part. I did it in four semesters because I decided to take ASL as well. It was a good, organized program. I found it manageable, but I think it always depends on what else is going on in your life. (ASL was by far the hardest class that I took. I've heard that can really vary with instructor, though.) -

I'm not from outside of the US, but I just completed this program last Dec., and there were definitely international students in it. If you do the program as outlined, you do indeed get a second B.S. at the end which is a nice plus. I could be wrong, but I would imagine that the online student tuition is the same no matter where you live as long as you're not in UT. You could always call and ask before you proceed further down that road. Hope that helps! -
If you get good GRE scores and stellar pre-req grades, you'll be very competitive for many schools. Good luck!

Kelsi-I know people have moved on the wishlist in the past, so there's hope. I got my letter today, and I'm ecstatic. UWEC was always my first choice, so I'll be sending in my acceptance tomorrow. ToshaSLP-Is there already a FB group for the cohort? -

Still nothing in the mail today. I'm really hoping we find out this week. -
A general guideline if no length is mentioned is two double-spaced pages.

Have you looked at the scores for the schools that you're interested in specific? Personally, I'd either use all of the prep stuff that i could find at the library or Magoosh (my preference) for a couple of months with a commitment to work on it a few hours a week. Then I'd take some practice tests and see if there was an improvement and make the decision then. It's one of the only things that you can dramatically change with some effort. Magoosh is $100 and retaking it is another $200. It's a lot less than a second round of application fees.

Eau Claire Distance Applicants
slporbust2016 replied to ToshaSLP's topic in Speech-Language Pathology Forum
I thought my interview went ok. I think they were mostly getting a feel for it you understood the program and the expectations and were equipped to learn in that environment. Mine wasn't very personal either. Just my impression. Hopefully, we both hear good news soon. -
Eau Claire Distance Applicants
slporbust2016 replied to ToshaSLP's topic in Speech-Language Pathology Forum
Basically, I'm going crazy waiting. I just checked the mail, and nothing today. Judging by the results page, the earliest ones have started arriving later this week the last couple of years. I'm applying to two other distance programs, but UWEC is my top choice, so if it comes later this week, that would save me a lot of stress. -
I'm a "mature" applicant with a family, so most of my volunteer experience is related to things that my kids are involved in. I have good grades and great GRE scores. I'm not sure how much it will matter, but I can report back after this cycle. From what I understand, AdComms want to know that you are personable and can deal with the public and individuals well, so I'd look for experiences that show that even if you can't find some that are directly related to SLP.

Fall 2016 Q&A waiting game
slporbust2016 replied to Hope2bSLP's topic in Speech-Language Pathology Forum
Not all schools do interviews.. I'm not even sure that a majority do. You can sometimes figure this out by looking on the results page and seeing which schools have interviews listed for past years.- 7 replies

What?!? They just want an extra $40?!? Can you do a money order? Or do you have postal money orders? (Sorry, not sure what's available in Canada.) I'd be really frustrated with that, too.

Non-traditional student taking GRE...advice please
slporbust2016 replied to melhos's topic in Speech-Language Pathology Forum
I used Magoosh which I liked very much. It was worth the $100 for me since it'd been 20 years since I took my last math class. I got a score that I was happy with on my first try.
