  1. sorry to hear that . I wish u both the best and I know it will work out.
  2. Maybe different tracks have different times for admission. It seem media and rhetoric do their own thing ..haven't heard anything about film or communication science though.
  3. thanks it's my own fault. I had an interview and it was meh. I had just had another with another school for 45 mins and trying to get the mojo for a short 10 mins was not happening. I am happy that I was not outright rejected tbh. I am also happy that two different fields liked my application. It gives me hope for other programs. I have noticed based on contacting faculty, that either you click or you dont with them.Sadly the faculty that really clicked with me is on sabbatical and is not the admission committee lol but we shall see. I at least knew I am a contender for my other schools. As far as the cold, I live in cold climate currently and I survived 3 NYC winters. I am good, because I love wool and cashmere so the cold is not an issue.
  4. You have many wanting to go to Minnesota so bad. I was waitlisted for another program there. So if I get off I would happily go.
  5. Oh well of the Comm, urbana had the least amount of fit. I just applied because I liked the African American Studies, History and Anthro program tbh. I am cool with that. As far as the rest two would be great fits and they have a great job placement. The fourth would be cool because they also produce great sport studies scholars. Now as far as deciding between them and American Studies. I have a few heavy hitter programs that I would love to get in that I would lean more toward overall. But I kind of look at things holistically like the place, how far stipend can go, the housing, adjacent departments and if they have a good record of alumni getting jobs.
  6. No to NYU,but yes to Michigan . Michigan is one of my top choices!
  7. The dean sent it a few messages. I had to go back and read it. She basically said by march 1 st we would know and if we didn't by then to email them.
  8. So I got my first rejection today. ICR sent me a nice little email. It didn't sting as much as I thought it would. Glad to have that out of the way. So that is my first finalized response from the 4 communication programs I applied too. Just three more to go. I did also get waitlisted at another program I applied to... Let the good times roll.
  9. Congrats on that.Good luck. I ended up applying last minute as I was going for ethnic studies when a prof in the program was like no you should apply to african american lol.
  10. oh well I am not a communications person. So I applied to Media and Culture track. Thats my entry point to the communication which limited to me only applying to 4 programs. My other programs are American Studies. Oh thats interesting to hear about the wait list.
  11. Congrats. I am happy for you. And it least you got that acceptance with the rejection to take the sting away. I hope they also send out rejections this week so I can put ICR to bed.
  12. I am reading lots of random fiction. I read about 2 or 3 200 pages books a day to escape the torturous wait.
  13. Also waiting for ICR. My communication list is only 4 schools thankfully. Keep up hope. Now my other programs have me super crazy. Even thought I applied to a lot of schools I sometimes wish I had added 3 to 4 which would have been crazy but still.
  14. Ok, so I went to USC as a undergrad and I actually spent time in Lexington Kentucky as well so I can give you some perspective between the two places. Columbia is the typical capital city in the south. USC is in downtown which is surrounded by suburbs and exurbs. You might want to explore these areas for shopping and such. As far as where grad students live, I didn't really interact with many when I was an undergrad but I can imagine they lived downtown close to campus. I know that many professors who were not SC natives mentioned they lived in the rosewood area. Now pet friendly is going to be something I am not sure of as I lived in the country as a child where pets were not an issue. I would ask about your pets and I would assume its easier to have cats than dogs. As far as your stipend, you will be fine. Columbia is very cheap even compared to Lexington. The sales tax up until the mid 2000s was 5%. Its 6% right now as far as I know. Food and gas will definitely be cheap as well. The campus seems to have grown by leaps and bounds since I last visited. Its a really pretty campus and its built into the downtown not unlike the University of Kentucky. I would imagine your experience would depend on the department you are in.I still keep in touch with a few faculty there and the ones that left did not leave because they were happen it was more of an offer they could not refuse. As far as things to do, Columbia is a lot slower than Lexington in my respects. I would say socially it depends on your department but you have a lot of options such as going to the wetlands, the zoo, some folks raft on the broad river, college football is big there as well no matter how well they do or not do. You are only 2 hours or so from Charleston, Charlotte and about 3 hours and come change from Atlanta. .. Please remember this is the bible belt so Sunday is still very much dominated by Church and church activities. SC has blue laws i.e. you cant buy anything outside of food from the store on Sunday until noon. Also the sale of alcohol stops at 5 or 6 pm on Saturday( watching folks rush to get it is always amusing). I would say the people are very friendly in comparison to other states that i have lived including Kentucky. I would think your greatest resource for very specific details would be from graduate students currently in the program. I was hesitate to reach out to them but the few I talked with from prospective schools were very insightful. Hope this helps you. Good Luck. Oh, remember its very wet in the spring and summer, much hotter than Lexington, with mostly mild winters but if snow does occur things will totally shut down. Also sleet and hail are common. So get your umbrella and rain boots ready.
  15. i would seek out students but especially non American students so you can get their perspective. Did you already have an advisor in mind? Maybe speak to them about things.
  16. I love your response. On one hand I feel this way in terms of PhD a tenure track is not the be all end all but on the other hand I want to be a professor not for the ivy tower but to extend my reach to empowering students. I am actually interested in the administration part just as much as the teaching part so my path should be interesting. Also some of my favorite professors I have learned have very unique paths to the academy and they were not as linear as we think. Everyone has a story and I think people has to keep that in mind. I
  17. So I dont know how many folks applied to Urbana's Institute of Communication Research PhD. But it seems to be something odd going on.First, we had two early January positing on the board saying they got in and now I just saw that someone saying they were the DGS is posting and said they were going to make decision this week. I had to LOL. While I know that professors are aware of this sight that is just too much.
  18. yep I saw that. Congrats to them. I was going to apply but after speaking with the DGS I learned that all off the scholars that were the best fit were gone. I wanted to apply to the Communication program but ended not doing that either.
  19. haha yeah that sounds easy. I also liked Berkeley's. Umass one application that I started but didnt finish was the worst of the bunch that I saw. It was so old looking in comparison.
  20. I am in my early 30s. So I know going back to get a PhD will be interesting for me but many professors I spoke to said that I would be a more attractive candidate as I have life experience, have a successful career, etc. and I have a better idea of what I want to do. But one thing is I dont look my age and I just end up blending in. I noticed this happening as I have been taking some classes at a local college after work and it leads to many interesting conversations when I tell them my background. I look forward to the experience and hope that what experience i have can be used to help them and what things they have that I dont have. they can show me. I am a big believer in reciprocity.
  21. No I did not apply. I really dont want to live in Ohio another 5 years tbh. However, I was tempted by OSU's comparative studies program but I ended up not applying.
