Well, the drive to Chicago is exactly 2 hours, but then you have to include the time you spend dealing with Chicago's traffic. Also, I looked up UCSB, wow, it looks like a great place, and if you feel like the research there is something that is closer to what you like, then go for it! There is nothing worse than doing something that you do not enjoy at all. However, the Mech Grad program seems rather small compared to UIUC. -

I agree that weather can play an important role. I personally loved UIUC when I visited, but I haven't had the chance to go to California so I can't provide a good opinion. As for big cities, well Urbana-Champaign isn't bad, they have got some nice buildings so you don't feel in the middle of nowhere at all. Plus I doubt you will really have that much time to visit other places anyways, I live 30 minutes from Dallas and I hardly ever go since I simply don't have much to do there and I have lots of work to do. For me, it would be UIUC without a doubt. In fact, it was my top choice (I had no funding though), and then I got a fully funded offer somewhere else. -
Finding programs that will accept non-engineers

@dmacfour I knew a woman in the Mechanical Engineering department who actually used to be a high-school english teacher and decided to switch. She got her MS and was one of the best students in the class, but I don't know more information about her background so I'm not sure what kind of pre-requisites she was required to complete. It was at UT Arlington. -
@hellz2dayeah Thank you for the reply. It is definitively very helpful to hear from your experience, as I think you are the most appropriate person to speak on the matter. I'm glad to hear that from the aero department, as I have always admired the work done over there. However since it's a non-thesis admission, I think I'm going to have to decline :/ If you don't mind me asking, what's your field of research?

@cocomomo I have personally never received a response from my inquiries to UT's department. I did got an admit, although it is for a non-thesis program. I was talking to one of my professors the other day and she said this is something that she has heard from many other students. UT is a huge university, and probably they can't pay attention or take care of all their students. I agree with @hellz2dayeah that Austin in an incredible city and it was one of my top choices, but I'm getting second thoughts about the department.

@racecar1 It seems like most universities are late on their responses. I talked with some professors at Purdue and they admitted they are a bit late on evaluating the offers. If you don't mind send me a message and we can talk about it in more detail. I also applied to 8 schools, was rejected by one (Washington), waitlisted by one (Michigan), accepted in 4 (Purdue, UT, Illinois, Gatech) and haven't heard from 2 (A&M and Maryland)

1. That's up to you...I don't think there is a perfect answer for that, as you had already committed and the professor was counting on you. 2. Well, the worse thing that it could happen is that the professor will be disappointed and probably angry...but that's all 3. That's not a problem, as long as you use the right one when you go for your visa and pay the SEVIS fees -
I honestly don't think so, and you should be thinking more about what your final goal is. If you want to maybe get a manager position, be the director of an engineering department in a company, then you should definitively do the business option, lots of people end up going back to school after a while to get a MBA. However, if you want to get really deep into research, or you are planning to do a PhD, then the Master of Science is probably the best fit, although I would still do the MBA as I don't really think it will affect you that much. I see really unlikely that someone would look down on you because of that.

Also, for those who applied to Texas A&M, one of the grad coordinators told me that they have a policy where they only accept people with a commitment of support from one of the faculty members (assistantships). I had emailed a couple of professors with no success and was honestly waiting to be admitted before reaching out to more people, but now I will start making some calls.

I contacted professor Driscoll like a month ago but he did not provide much information, he just said they were still reviewing profiles and would get back to me once decisions were made. Looking at the results website, it seems like people are getting decisions right now, so I'm guessing we should hear back from them before the end of the week.

@Kev_182 It seems like a lot of people got decisions today. I have not heard anything. I applied to a PhD program there but on my SOP I said that I would be ok if offered admission to the MS program.

Well I would not assume anything until the April 15 deadline. In my case I applied to 8 schools and I have only heard from 2 of them, so there is still chance. What's your program?

@pvfm I see in your profile you were also accepted in UT Austin. Congratulations! That's amazing! Did you receive an email or you found out on the Open AM website? So far which one are you inclined to attend?

@jljljljl I was also offered an admission to the MS program at UIUC. I got the email on Monday and it said that funding options are still being reviewed. I have also contacted a professor (Dr. Selig) asking if he is accepting any new students. I'm planning to visit the department next week to get a better idea on this. Finally, what's your area of specialization?

@pvfm It's a MS program. I'm trying to arrange a visit to the department and meet with some professors. I also got a rejection from Washington-Seattle (PhD) last Friday. Have you heard anything about funding?

Sorry for the late reply. I was rejected at Washington-Seattle (PhD), no word of anyone else. I will have a phone call with a professor in Purdue that I would like to do research with, so hopefully that plays on my part.

I wouldn't give them any info...contact the university right away and if they insist it's legit then ask for doing it yourself. It's pretty suspicious

Congrats! What professors do you want to do research with at Purdue? There I actually applied for aerospace systems as my first option and aerodynamics as the second one. In aerodynamics I am interested in the work by Dr. Blaisdell.
