  1. Congratulations mate! Was it an email? Were you assigned a supervisor with the acceptance?
  2. Sorry I didn't take into account that you might be unaware of that slang. It was meant to be a light hearted sarcastic comment but I'm sorry if it was uncalled for. Too bad, when did you receive your Waterloo reject?
  3. Didn't want to refute your points mate. Just wanted to give some positive news. Anyways I am not a member of that forum. What is it about?
  4. I do actually have some facts for everyone here: SFU hasn't sent more than half of offers it usually sends for Fall intake. They take in almost 1500 applicants each fall so do the math and see that there are a lot of offers up for grabs still. (From interacting with an admin at SFU grad school). I know someone who got accepted at CS Thesis program and he said that the offer acceptance deadline for them is this Monday. Maybe we can expect another wave of decisions after that? UBC told someone at edulix.com that they will be reviewing applications until the end of April. Now unless a school has a lot of pending applications that it hasn't reviewed yet or really just playing the waiting game, there's no point in delaying it further. So I assume for UBC there are still a lot of offers up for grabs. McGill seems to be silent on all fronts. Out of all the people I personally know, no one has received a decision (one has received a reject though) in CS. They promised that by march end they'll give out results but I think they might delay it again (again due to number of applications that are still left for review). If they were delaying because they were waiting for people to accept their offers until a deadline, then there was no point in delaying the decision dates for them (First it was March 15, then March end and now maybe even more delay). As far as I know, universities give a set deadline to offer recipients to accept the offer, and after that date, they send out another wave of admits. But this is not the case anywhere. Waterloo sent a number of rejections yesterday. I saw a lot of people getting rejected, but none to be accepted (or maybe one or two, nothing significant). Maybe we can assume acceptances are coming in soon? Toronto might be a long shot since as you read they are advising people to move on and not depend on them for decisions. So there you are OK to lose hope (I am losing hope here as well). I've been member of this and another forum for 5 years now, and I've monitored 5 application seasons. What I've noticed each year is that usually on the forum there are comparable number of acceptances/rejection for each university/program. Maybe in some cases less acceptance people and more rejections. But this year, on all the forums I've seen, the number of people who "haven't heard anything" or "have been rejected" are much much much more than the number of people who are "accepted". This makes me believe that maybe, just maybe, the actual offers have not been made yet. If a lot of us are waiting, who's getting the offers? I understand a significant portion of people are not on forums, but we do have some small sample size which usually depicts the actual distribution of both positive and negative offers. There. I've given you so many reasons to stay positive. I know it's hard, I know because I'm losing hope too, but I think we all might just have to wait a bit more and have faith. I'm pretty sure in about 1-2 weeks of time we all be here, going through our previous posts and saying to ourselves - "Huh, I was anxious for no reason, I got in my favourite program!"
  5. A friend got this from UBC when she acquired about her status, she applied to MSc CS Thesis: No decision has been made on your application yet. We are expected to continue evaluating applications until the end of April So it seems for UBC things are going to take another month. I literally banged my head on the wall after reading this. But it also suggests that there are a lot of applications that are still not reviewed, so we have ample chance of getting in still. Its still a bit too early to lose hope.
  6. Hahahah rejection cron If we're being technical (and positive), I don't think the records are updated sequentially and very slowly. Probably a single SQL command to turn a certain batch of entries in database into rejections. If we were out, then probably it would have happened with everyone else Or maybe we are in the next batch . At this point, I don't even care now. I'm ready. Hit me (I'm currently so anxious that I want to run away or bang my head in the wall, but to keep myself a bit sane I am writing this haha) Also, atleast we got something to do today: Check waterloo portal every 10 minutes.
  7. UPDATE: Seems to me as mass rejects. My friend got rejected. It says: "You have been denied admission by the academic department". For me however the status is still "No decision has been made".
  8. Just checked, mine still says No decision has yet been made by the academic department.
  9. You're losing hope a bit too early mate. Believe me, not all offers have been made. UBC is way behind its schedule for reviewing applications and SFU has made less than half of offers what it usually makes in a Fall intake (info coming from interaction with an administrative person at both universities). I'm sure things are similar in Waterloo and McGill too. Calm down dude, anytime now
  10. It's so easy for the people who applied to US, you guys get your decisions by Jan-Feb or maximum March. For people like me who applied to Canadian universities, it's been over 4 months of wait, and still no word from anywhere. I refreshed my mail a good 20 times during the day. And I check mails every night at usually 2 AM and 5 AM.
  11. Dude we just gotta wait. If it comforts you, know that there are a LOT of people in the same boat, who haven't heard back from anywhere. I myself haven't heard back from ANYWHERE I applied. I know it's really hard...Most of the time during the day I'm just super anxious and keep checking my email/portals/gradcafe results section for any news, but to no avail. I actually work from home so I don't have the luxury of going away for work for the good part of the day to keep my mind off things. It's just torturous. But I'm trying to get by just by knowing that there are others too, in fact a lot of them, a number of which will be admitted definitely. So we might be one of those lucky ones
  12. Yeah man same here. But I think it'll all be worth it, we'll probably hear back from everywhere all at once, and then deciding where to go will be easier.
  13. Congrats! I followed up with UBC last week and all I get is a generic email saying offers go out in March, and if you haven't heard back until March first week you're still being considered for admission. This was from UBC. UofT said they send decisions through February to March. I applied to computer science masters though. Can you tell me what your deadline to accept the offer at both UofT and UBC?
  14. I don't think so. Most of the people I know who applied to Canadian universities, including the ones you applied to, have still not heard anything from them. I think its pretty common, so patience my friend.
  15. Yes sure..I'll hit you up on email too. Meanwhile no reply from anywhere so far..This is literally driving me mad. I spend whole days under anxiety and feel like running away from home. Going to drive to a nearby big city to get my mind off things for a few days. I've never been like this my entire life, I've waited numerous "results" and never have been so anxious about something. Maybe it's coz for me graduate school is not just another school and degree. It will bring with itself super exciting aspects of moving to a different country, studying something I love at a place I love, meet new people from different cultures and nationalities. This is lifechanging for me...I see people on the forum who have been applying for years straight without any positive reply. But I don't think I'm cut out for that, coz I think they're already there...And I'm stuck in a third world country. #rantOff
  16. March 15 came and went away, but I heard nothing. Turns out my irrational fear wasn't truly irrational as such... Now hoping I hear back by March end..
  17. I tend to think that the sheer number of people applying to a specialisation is not a sure shot indicator of competitiveness. Since ML and AI is a booming field right now, I've seen that a lot of people tend to apply to this specialisation without any relevant prior experience (two of my friends applied to ML specialisation, but they never worked on any project and have no relevant experience or even prior coursework). Weeding out such applications is easy for the committee and the decisions are ultimately in the favour of those who demonstrate good relevant experience and research. Also, ML is being adopted in many other fields, ranging from vision, linguistics, robotics, security, networks and even distributed systems. So it is not wrong to say that the professors in all these fields will be willing to take at least one ML student in their group, and hence the increased number of positions for ML. I personally work in medical image analysis and apply ML to this domain. So I have two options in front of me: join a primarily ML based lab, or join a medical imaging lab where ML is being used. But I think we are all just speculating here, and none of us have actually any ground report attesting to the claims we make here. What else can we do, the wait is just killing, and speculating that we have enough chances is the only way to stay sane...whew.
  18. Seeing you guys coping with issues in your life which are both professional and personal, I couldn't help but feel humbled that I have been fortunate to not have to go through similar problems in my life. Culture in India is a lot different that what it is in western countries. Basically its almost always the case that parents help their children complete their education, no matter for how long or how much it might cost. And this is not just for the affluent types, but even for people who can't afford to fund their children's education. Parents take loans, sell out stuff (mostly land and gold jewellery, something Indians have plenty) and fund their children. The upside to this is that we are not in a bank or federal debt that leeches out interest money from our life. The downside is that we have family pressure sometimes to return whatever we took so that they can continue with their own lives peacefully too. One of my friends who is attending USC (one of the most expensive schools for international students in US) is being funded entirely by her parents. The tuition itself accounts for everything her parents earned throughout their lifetime (around USD 70K for 2 years), but they're doing it. Her parents barred her from doing any part time job too so that she can concentrate on her studies fully. Seen numerous such examples throughout my connections. In my case, although I've always been supported by parents both emotionally and financially, I have been working as a consultant for many companies throughout my undergrad and finally got a job which makes enough to give them back whatever they put in. Even for my masters, I have enough savings to pay out tuition fees, and use the stipend to fund my living costs. Anyways, just came to vent about how none of the 5 schools I applied to have replied to me, even when I applied in November 2016! This wait is so frustrating sometimes. Two of the universities are saying we can hear back by March end, so I am basically praying my life away to get through this week of wait. Whew...
  19. The source of information is an email I got from SFU when I inquired about the status of my application. Anyways, sharing just the research area won't really represent the competition everyone is facing, but if you insist, here's mine. Research Area: Machine Learning. Contact with faculty: No.
  20. Patience my friend, I am hoping we all will hear back from McGill and UBC by this month's end.
  21. Doesn't seem to be. McGill will send out decisions by March end, and so will UBC. Regarding Waterloo what the other poster said, I'm not sure if its correct. Though it might be the case that applications are handled by professors, there hasn't been much activity regarding results from their end. So it might very well be the case that they are holding out decisions and will send them some time soon. There's no reason to lose hope for Waterloo as far as I see it.
