  1. Well, my decision has been made for me. The person above me at Tennessee accepted the last offer (there were two RWL spots). So, I've been shut out this year. I was hesitant about leaving my full time Lecturer position for a PhD during this entire process. I'm going to reflect and think about if I want to reapply next year or just be satisfied with what I have. Good luck to everyone!
  2. I'm still on the wait list at Tennessee. They told me that the person they are waiting on has until April 19 to make her decision. We're in the same boat!
  3. It's nice to see some happy outcomes for people waiting it out! I just received an email from the DGS at UTK informing me that the person ahead of me has until April 19 to decide. It sounded like it's their policy to give a person two weeks after receiving an offer (ie. the person was accepted on 4/5, so she has until 4/19 to decide). Is this common practice? I don't see why anyone would wait to make a decision after April 15 if they have other offers though...
  4. UTK told me that I would have a different deadline besides April 15 (at least a week or two) if I got accepted off of the wait list at this point. I don't think I could sign up for 5+ years without visiting.
  5. @Elisajoy90 and @katie64 I'm next in line for a RWL PhD spot (acceptance and funding) at UTK. Leanne Hinkle said that they would notify asap if anything changed during the weekend.
  6. @Carl Mark I know that I'm next in line. I was just wondering if I could figure out the person's level of interest. I'm used to waiting by now though
  7. I know that at least four people on grad cafe were wait listed at Tennessee for the PhD program. I was just moved up from #2 on the waitlist to #1 in the Rhetoric, Writing, and Linguistics PhD track. Sending a post out in the universe to ask if the person who was #1 on the wait list is still active on here and if you are considering UTK's offer.
  8. Question about getting accepted off the wait list close to April 15: Do you usually have you make a decision very quickly? Do they give you time to visit or is that seen as a waste of time at this point? One program told me that they don't expect movement on the wait list until *after* April 15. Another program told me that they are waiting on one person to make a decision before they turn to the waitlist. I'm number 2 on that waitlist. Side note: I'm completely expecting to be ultimately shut out, but I can't stop that nagging voice in the back of my head that says "what if"
  9. Double post: That said, when my husband had the choice of a fellowship offer at UCLA or a TAship with on campus housing at UCSD, we chose UCSD because we hate LA and the traffic/higher rent. I guess I'm team Minnesota.
  10. Can I just jump in and complicate this by saying that the winter in Minnesota sucks but it's not always like that. It's the land of 10,000 lakes and those lakes aren't always frozen. Fall, spring, and summer are great in Minnesota. The people are the nicest you'll ever meet. It's a great school. Minneapolis actually has a lot of culture. The faculty/course work/funding at Washington seem like huge red flags to me (no matter how much you like Seattle). I think it should come down to Minnesota and USC. In that case, the funding is better at USC and your main reason to not pick that school is that you're bored with LA. My two cents as an observer with absolutely no consequences.
  11. Is anyone else sitting here with only wait lists? Just me? Oh, cool. *continues to wait*

There are quite a few buses that go to campus, and a lot of students use them. Here's a link with all of the routes: https://transportation.ucsd.edu/alternatives/transit/#Bus-routes The superloop is always packed. I would recommend looking for a place on a bus line. As for neighborhoods... University City is close to UCSD. Also, a lot of people live in Hillcrest, which is a really cool area with a lot of restaurants. I used apartments.com to find my current off campus apartment, but you can use this site to help you find a UCSD roommate once you have an account: https://offcampushousing.ucsd.edu/. When my husband and I had to move off campus, I really wanted to live close to campus or south of UCSD, but the apartments were either way out of our price range or extremely old. For some perspective, a two bedroom near campus can be up to $3000+. My current off campus apartment is North of campus and inland. I pay ~$1700/month for a two bedroom now. However, I have to drive and park every day because the public transportation doesn't really connect up here. Honestly, SHORE was the deciding factor when my husband made his decision between UCLA and UCSD. We didn't think we could afford off campus housing in LA or San Diego. The stipends are rather generous though, so it's definitely possible.

Mesa, One Miramar, and Mesa Nueva are all together on the other side of the 5. However, you can easily hop on the bus and take that over to campus. Rita Atkinson is on campus and it's furnished. However, last time I checked, you can't park anywhere near Rita Atkinson. So, that's a pain. Coast apartments have the best location (with views of the ocean), but you won't get in there. I lived in One Miramar (OMS) for two years and enjoyed it. My husband and I had a two bedroom apartment. The bathroom situation is a bit weird. There's one room with a toilet and a sink and another room with a sink and a shower. Almost all of the units in OMS have a balcony (or patio on the first floor). Also, there's a lounge, some green space, and a ping pong table. You can walk over to Mesa Nueva and use the pool there too. The biggest downside is that you have to park in the parking ramp and walk to your building. Mesa is old, but spacious. There are parking lots around the buildings, which makes parking there somewhat more convienient. The units at Mesa all have balconies/patios too. Mesa Nueva is brand new, but it does feel very crowded (like everyone is on top of you). Also, the studios are extremely small. So, I would encourage you to think about that carefully before committing to one. They have a parking ramp over at Mesa Nueva, so the parking situation is similar to OMS. Let me know if you have other questions!
  14. Welcome! It seems like quite a few of us are in the same boat with Tennessee!
  15. I'm #2. Update: wait listed at ASU and Tennessee / rejected from OSU and Wisconsin / implied rejection from Syracuse / somewhere far away from consideration when it comes to Purdue because of their notification limbo
  16. @Daenerys and anyone else wait listed at UTK: They made two initial offers to RWL applicants. NOTE: They also told me my number on the wait list when I asked.
  17. There are a few people over on the Rhet/Comp thread that were accepted at Purdue quite a while ago.
  18. What are the protocols for visiting a school that you are wait listed at? Do you ask about the possibility of visiting? Wait until you get off the wait list? Past results make it seem like people get accepted off the wait list close to April 15 sometimes. In that case, there wouldn't really be time to visit, right?
  19. Have you heard from Tennessee yet? I got an email today with a decision letter this morning (I'm wait listed). They said that they made 10 PhD offers.
  20. I got an email from Tennessee this morning with a decision letter that says I'm on the wait list. Also, ASU replied to an email I sent and told me that I'm on the wait list (not as formal as UTK). So, this means a lot more waiting during the next 1.5 months...
  21. I emailed ASU and received the following reply: "I just double checked with the area and they don't know at this time how quickly there will be movement in the wait list. I regret that I cannot tell you more than that you are on a place in the list where admission is still possible. As you probably know applicants have up until April 15th to let us know their decisions. We can only hope that they let us know sooner rather than later." It sounds like some acceptances have gone out, but they have an invisible wait list (I haven't received anything from ASU either). I only see MA acceptances on the results board though.
