  1. Yo, @suavesana...wait. You were at the ICON symposium? Wait...we met. You're the monkey/primate person, right? I'm the geography girl. Online world and reality coinciding is weird.
  2. Late to the party, but happy this is here! Hi, paleo peeps! Undergrad: U Maryland, Anthropology and GIS Masters: U Sheffield, Osteoarchaeology Research: Undergrad RA in paleoclimate/zooarchaeology lab where studied prehistoric/Viking Iceland. Smithsonian Natural History Museum RA where studied paleoenviro in the Chesapeake using oysters. Want to study conservation paleobiology of estuaries (don't ask me where lol. I'm looking at both the Arctic and Pacific Islands, so basically anywhere). Applied to: U Georgia, U Chicago, Penn State, BU, Brown Got interviews for Penn State, Georgia, and Chicago so far, haven't heard from BU or Brown. All extremities will be crossed for a while!
  3. On-site interview went SO WELL it's ridiculous. The stable isotope lab/profs/town/everything at this school was so surprisingly good that the school actually jumped up my list from tier 2 to 1. Which is kinda great and kinda terrible because now I have 3 schools in my personal tier 1 and this one is nowhere near the water (which is a giant drawback for me). Decision time is gonna be hard lol
  4. Got an interviews for U Chicago Geophysics and U Georgia Integrative Conservation and Geography. No decisions yet, though.
  5. POI contacted me after Penn State interview and said it went well! She said they have a site I can jump on with my project idea! Next week/week after, I find out if I'm a finalist. Wooo!
  6. My meditation tapes often talk about practicing gratefulness to decrease stress and feelings of depression, so after a majorly ridiculous day, I think I'll indulge. 1. On the day of a Skype interview (which was stressing me out), I'm grateful I got to spend the morning with friends painting a Dr. Seuss mural at a women's shelter. Doing good and doing art really helped chill me out before the interview. 2. I'm grateful to my friend who allowed me to conduct my interview at her house because she has good wifi and mine sucks. 3. I'm grateful one of my SOP editors told me to narrow my interests more and come up with a few good project ideas, because they asked for ideas during the interview, so if I hadn't spent the time to come up with ideas, I would have been laughed out of the interview.
  7. Just had an interview...I think it went well? Maybe? I hope I didn't come off as having weak ideas and as not being able to talk about my research, cause I feel like that's how I sounded...but they seemed to like me well enough?
  8. I'm on a kick of reading about old hurricanes and how people responded to them. More historical ethnography, and a little heavier on the meteorology, but I liked it for that. So Storm of the Century by my man Al Roker is a great account of the 1900 Hurricane in Galveston, TX.
  9. Just got an email saying I am "high on the funding priority list" for Georgia Geography (archaeology prof)! Not exactly sure what that means, but I'm taking it as a good sign!
  10. I don't even kinda live near enough to my family for them to send me the beautiful things they cook and insist on describing to me in painful detail. Case in point: my brother made an amazing vegetarian "steak" and ale pie and sent me a million pictures but didn't send me any food. How dare he.
  11. Wow...there's a lot of activity on the results board today. Seems like we're really coming into the thick of it now. The wait is almost over! (Congrats to those who've heard positive things!)
  12. @GameofLoans16 Didn't apply to any of those, but I went to Maryland for my BA and knew a bunch of the MAA students and all of the profs. Program is good, you won't go wrong there. If you have questions, feel free to PM me.
  13. The wifi at my apartment actually seems to be working. Like what???? You forget how much functional wifi is a necessity until you don't have it for a month. I think my landlady switched services and daaamn is it helping
  14. Apparently I'm on the shortlist for University of Chicago Geophysics? I didn't apply to Geophysics, but apparently that's where I fit better...That's cool. They're bringing me for a funded visit next month.
  15. What questions did y'all ask your interviewers? I'm pretty sure I'll be comfortable with whatever they can throw at me, but in the moment, I know I'll be too nervous to come up with good questions for them...
  16. I'm being jerked around a lot for a job I really want. They keep rescheduling the interview, keep saying they want me and then I don't hear from them for weeks, the funding keeps being reallocated...I know none of this is the fault of the hiring manager and funding is most of the problem, but it's so frustrating cause i want this job so badly...
  17. @AnthroPhDHopeful yeah, so am I. profs are hard to wrangle. I just submitted without him and am sending him the reminders forevermore. they'll come around eventually....
  18. While on my flight back to my job I kinda hate, I got an email offering me an interview for the job I really want and would go part-time PhD to keep. Meaning I have to fly back at the end of the week, but whatever. I want this job SO BAD.
  19. Finally submitted my last application! Feaaaaaar
  20. University of Georgia, Integrative Conservation and Geography, funded visit. Heard three-ish weeks ago. Penn State, Anthropology, Skype interview. Heard yesterday. The nervousness is real, man, I knoooow. I'm definitely just going to continue the process, as nothing is set in stone now. But, the issue is more that the RA position is at a research institute that I kinda want to work at long-term. They also do offer PhDs there, but neither I nor my PI friend know how that works. So, it could be that I get both. I don't know. I don't think there's anything I can know or do now, but does it seem crazy to be considering an RA position over PhD?
  21. So, I'm starting to hear back from schools and have gotten 1 funded visit and 1 interview, so that's nice, but a monkey wrench just got thrown into the party. A friend of mine is a PI at one of the big prestigious marine bio labs and the research assistant position I applied for months ago just decided it's down to me and 2 others. So, obviously nothing is definite for either the job or PhD, but what would you do? Between a job you badly want with potential to be a career or a PhD, which do you pick? I know I should have this figured out this far into the process, but the big monkey wrench is that the two schools I've heard back from have may not allow me to do the project I want, but the RA position will...
  22. @phyanth Thanks!! I did...kinda? A little. Like two emails back and forth. POI and my masters advisor are pals, so maybe that helped? This was one I was kinda expecting not to get anything for, tbh. In my first email to POI, I addressed it to the wrong person So that was fun. There was further conversation, so hopefully she forgave me lol.
  23. @phyanth That would be me! Thanks! Kinda came out of left field, but I'm happy about it nonetheless!
  24. I'm gonna preempt this one by saying I adore watching terrible movies, like the worse, the better. So, I just watch Zombeavers (2014) on Netflix and I am just. omg. Zombeavers. Do yourselves a favor, take off your thinking caps, and watch some terrible people get eaten by zombie beaver puppets.
  25. We had a white Christmas! And now it's FRIGID but I'm sick so it doesn't matter that I can't go outside and enjoy the snow. So bright side, I'm not missing anything cause we're all stuck inside.
