Yes. It doesn't make sense to be honest.
Last year, I got a Vanier but did not get FRQSC. For the exact same research project. So congrats you everyone who got the award and for those who did not, please please please don't take it personally or as a reflection of your worth and potential in academia.

Oh well. It seems that each funding agency in Canada has a particular way of distribution, which compared to the US for instance, in many ways functions very well. However, in other ways it lets down the applicants. I hope everyone is managing to keep a healthy level of sanity and serenity these days!

Maybe it gets added to funds available for subsequent year? Shame they don’t do second round, etc.

Keep it. Totally valid, and research grants are always a good thing. Money begets money, so if they see that you've been awarded money before, they will be more inclined to give you more in the future.

@Miss Brightside You can list those on your CVs even if they were cancelled.

This is definitely a bizarre situation. I don't know if I've ever seen a formal policy against it, but common sense alone dictates that the TA should not be a current student for a variety of reasons. 1. How can you judge the quality of someone's work when you are not as fluent in the subject matter? A TA is usually someone who did well in a course and then assists in the instruction and grading of material in subsequent semesters/years. It's like the in-between stage of student and professor. 2. How can the TA be impartial if they are grading their fellow classmates? This is another reason why TAs are usually more advanced students because the likelihood of there being much interaction and "history" with the students in the class is unlikely.

Impostor syndrome is a real thing for a lot of PhD and graduate students. Don't panic if you do not understand everything at first. It's absolutely normal. A lot of the things we learn at this stage implies years of reflection and understanding. Your understanding of concepts, realities, topics will mature and evolve with you. Don't panic if you do not get it at first, it has nothing to do with you being stupid or not deserving of being a grad student.

    Usually, you teach sections.

Universities with this restriction also generally have competitive opportunities for advanced students to give their own class.

Yeah, grading can take up a lot of time. Since this isn't a one time opportunity, it sounds like holding off until later would be the better choice since comps are a big milestone.

This is going to sound silly, but I've always loved just "chilling" in school supplies stores (i.e. Staples). It reminds me of the time when I was a kid and my mom brought my sisters and I to buy our school supplies before the academic year would start. I've always loved back-to-school season because of that reason. I really enjoy being in an academic/learning institution in general so I guess it reminds me of that as well.

I am aiming for three. There are different components to my doctoral thesis project, that I could easily split into three different articles.

    That is excellent!
I want to follow up to state that I have just submitted the first round of major revisions for a research paper (which was first submitted to a peer reviewed journal back in July 2019).
If they accept all of my revisions, this will be my second research paper for 2020.
    I have prior peer-reviewed publications in 2019, 2016, 2015, 2014, 2013...
I just started drafting a third research paper....I am hoping I can submit it to a journal by the end of April (the deadline for a special issue)...wish me luck!!

I have one in review right now, should have the result of the review process by May 15. It isn't from my PhD, it's from my master's thesis though

I know a few places have reported how to cite a canceled conference.
Here is one for APA style: https://apastyle.apa.org/blog/canceled-conferences
Here is one for MLA style: https://style.mla.org/presentation-canceled-conference/
If your discipline uses a different method, I would do Google search for an example for that one.

Glad professional associations are on top of this and we still get proper credit for our hard work.
