  1. If anyone wants to invest in a professional-looking high quality backpack, look into Timbuk2 bags (I'm sorry if someone has already recommended this). I've been using mine for work for almost 3 years and it still looks good as new. I used to use a messenger bag, but I have back problems now and it's just not worth it to me to potentially hurt myself in the name of fashion. Plus my mother-in-law calls millennials "the backpack kids" because backpacks are becoming more popular. EDIT: Just saw that someone above has already recommended Timbuk2. They really are great bags.
  2. oh no! This makes me nervous because my 2015 tax information is quite different from 2016 (more income in 2016, but I don't want to have aid for the 2017-2018 academic year and then receive nothing for the following year(s)). Does that make sense? What would be the next option if they decide I don't qualify for Stafford loans (or if I only qualify for a small amount). Would I have to look into the GradPlus loans? Thank you so much for your help. This is a little overwhelming!
  3. I didn't think income mattered in terms of how much you are eligible for for a graduate loan. I thought you could borrow up to $20,500 direct stafford loan, whether you make $10,000 a year or $100,000. Am I wrong?
  4. There are some courses that allow you to do observations online through a site called Master Clinician Network. You basically watch videos of prerecorded sessions. It isn't the same as in-person, but I know it helped me get a better sense of the field. I'm not sure if you can sign up for MCN without registering for a university course, but you could definitely contact them to find out - if you think watching the videos might help you (alternatively you could sign up for a prerequisite course that offers online observations). You also might want to look into observing someone in a healthcare setting. It's probably more likely that you will find someone working on evenings and weekends. Good luck
  5. Too add to SpeechLaedy's recommendations on books on client experiences, these are some books we read in one of my prereq courses: "Where is the Mango Princess" (written by the wife of someone with a closed-head injury) "Look me in the eye" (written by a man with Asperger's) "The Diving Bell and the Butterfly" (a memoir written by someone completely paralyzed by a stroke who could use only his eyes to communicate)
  6. I'm not sure about any of the legal stuff, but try not to be too hard on yourself. We all make mistakes. My friend lost her teaching license for marijuana possession. She had to stop teaching in public schools for (I think) 2 years but she found another job in education in the interim. Then she got her license back and has a great teaching job (again, this is just the way she described it to me, so I can't say for sure that it is exactly what happened). So, things might be more difficult for you now than before the DUI, but I'm sure there are others who have gone through it and come out ok professionally.
  7. I hope they don't wait until after the commitment deadline! Whether or not I receive an assistantship at one school will probably be my deciding factor.
  8. Haha, Willy Wonka is so creepy. I only applied to 2 because I'm unable to relocate right now, and I can't afford out of state tuition for online programs. Luckily, I have already received one acceptance. If I hadn't been accepted, I would surely be kicking myself!! I think those of you who applied to several schools made a smart choice.
  9. I would also like to take the neuro course at Longwood this summer, but I will be taking Biology at the same time and Longwood has Biology 101 as a prerequisite to the neuro course. I think I might take the course at ENMU. It would be my first class at ENMU and last prerequisite course. I wonder if you could email them and ask about working ahead (just maybe don't say you are going on a 2 week vacation) :).
  10. I applied based only on cost and location (I already have another graduate degree from a more "brand name" expensive school, and the name meant nothing because when I graduated there were no jobs in the field). For the SOP, I recommend reading the school's mission statement. That helped me a lot. For instance, if a school mentions that they have a commitment to diversity, you can share your own experiences with diverse populations and how your values mirror the university's commitment to diversity (but in a better-worded way).
  11. rockchalk - Did you figure anything out about transferring schools? I also have epilepsy, so I am rooting for you!
  12. Hi everyone! cmontcer, did you end up deciding to attend FSUs distance learning grad program last year? I was just accepted there yesterday (phew!) and am waiting to hear back from some other Florida schools. Does anyone know whether students are able to continue working (full or part-time) during this program? It is about 6 - 8 credits per semester so it seems like it would be reasonable to at least work part-time. Also, are the Stafford loan limits different for a part-time program than they are for full-time? Thanks!
