  1. Perhaps a little off-topic but still related to LGBT life: is life in a big city better for single LGBT people? I have no issues with living in a smaller city, but I'm worried of running out of possible people to date lol. Big cities tend to offer more LGBT spaces than just your university's LGBT club, too.
  2. I would definitely try to go, maybe ask your professors? Hopefully they'll be understanding since they went through the same process. -- Congrats on the LSU acceptances guys! Sorry about UPenn too Fortunately you have other better options!
  3. I asked a current student about what the visit day would be like so I could prepare myself better, and he kindly told me about it. I'm not referring to maybe "what can I do to be accepted?" but rather "What is it like?" so I can feel more calm and prepared that day.
  4. Thanks everybody! I went ahead and emailed a couple people and got pretty kind and detailed responses.
  5. Hello everybody, I was mainly looking to hear from current Ph.D. students if it's awkward when applicants or people who have already been accepted email you to ask about the program and life in town in general. I'm trying to write some emails to current graduate students but I don't want to come off as awkward, just trying to get an impression that will help me make a decision. Thanks
  6. I'm afraid this will happen to me as well. It takes me back to when I attended an interview for undergraduate and everybody was flaunting their volunteering trips to other countries and the stress they felt taking IB classes (my school did not have an IB program, needless to say, and I had only taken 2 AP classes too). At the end, I think schools put these things into perspective. My interview ended up in me being awarded a scholarship that allowed me to finish undergraduate debt-free, so I had no reason to feel the way I did back then. It's hard to control those feelings, of course, but if you were selected it's because they saw your potential and achievements!
  7. Thank you! I will keep that in mind, I didn't think about that. I was aware that for UNC for example they also require that I pay close to $1000, so I guess other schools will say this as well. i definitely have to ask about this. Greetings to the Spanish side! Me alegra escuchar que varios miembros ya han sido aceptados a varias escuelas --- August is far away, hopefully I'll be able to save for school fees and the deposit to rent a place. Whew, stress creeping in again.
  8. Congrats to you as well @Green.Mango !!! Are you planning on visiting IUB? I'm trying to arrange a visit for March, theirs was also my first app! @Monsieur VĂ©nus thanks for the heads up. They sent me some estimate of what the stipend might be and they also mentioned that living in Bloomington was very affordable. Before making a decision I plan on visiting campus and seeing the funding offer.
  9. Oh it was an email addressed to me lol. Looking forwards to Rutgers!
  10. Haha I really should! Though I understand competition must have been intense, they probably accept 1 or 2 people at most every year.
  11. Well it's game over for Chicago. They recommended me for their MAPH program instead which...no... I still have Pittsburgh and Rutgers to hear from. Schools were rather fast I'd say. I still have to wait til March for visit days but I can already make some comparisons and think about my decision!
  12. Oops first rejection (from Michigan.) That would've been a great fit for me, but at the same time I feel oddly relieved since as it is my decision is hard enough FĂ©licitations on NYU @madamoiselle !
  13. FĂ©licitations @HomewardBound !
  14. Congrats on Michigan and Columbia!!
  15. Thank you and congrats on your Pittsburgh acceptance!! It's a great program, so happy for you!
  16. Thank you guys! Bloomington sounds great and this one was the application that started it all.
  17. Last day of January! Now those programs who said acceptances come out early to mid-February will have no excuse (cough cough Chicago).
  18. I came to post this. I reported it as spam. I do get the impression that "Sexy Chinese Girl" needs help, though.
  19. Thank you!! I think I'm excited about UChicago's decision the most, but really all are great schools and I will have a tough time making a decision. Good luck on your applications!
  20. Thank you! I know, I'm very grateful for that! I guess when you apply to so many schools there will always be lots of waiting. Best of luck to you, I'm sure good news are coming soon!
  21. Oh my God, of course. Why did I not think of this? Thank you so much.
  22. Hi everybody, sorry if this is the wrong section but I've been admitted to this Ph.D. program and I'm having a hard time understanding what this means "Your admission offer includes full tuition remission and a stipend in the amount of 22,000 per academic year for up to six years. The total value of your award package is $75,000.00 (changed the real quantities, but you get the point). If you accept another award from a source outside of this university, the amount of this award may be altered or deferred." If the yearly award is 22k per academic year for six years, then how could the total value of the award package be less than 22k times 6? I assume it's possible for me to get outside aid after my first year, but what worries me is that 75k is the limit of the stipend. It is a little confusing to me.
  23. Congrats on your Cornell acceptance @madamoiselle and @Saltshaker ! Excited about IU Bloomington, too. It was the first app I submitted back in October, so the wait feels eternal for that one for me.
  24. Selling this GRE guide on eBay that I barely used now that i got accepted lol
